Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

Yay! I finally got Gnome 3.2 installed successfully on my desktop. I must have done some step wrong before because it's working beautifuly now. I'll try to let you guys know if I see any major issues that are not Arch specific.

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

It's been awhile since I posted in here. I thought I would share. I've got Gnome 3.2 successfully installed and running under Arch Linux on my ATI equipped laptop. I'm still having issues getting it going on my Nvidia desktop with nouveau drivers. This update was the first one that broke my arch sys...

Re: Gnome3 for the experienced (FUN Stuff!!!)

Not to discourage anyone from LMDE or Linux Mint, but just an observation as I do still have LMDE installed with the parts of Gnome 3 that are currently available from experimental. Today after reading a bit about it I decided to give Arch Linux a try on another partition. A different beast to be su...

Re: gnome 3 upgrade

That is one thing I miss in the Gnome-shell is the ability to right click the desktop and bring up a terminal whenever you wanted one. That is mostly the reason for adapting to the AWN dock is because I can have a terminal a click away. Admittedly, most of my experience is in the Windows area, a lit...

Re: gnome 3 upgrade

I'm basically just running a Mint Debian install, upgraded at the time in testing, then upgraded to unstable, and then grabbed the Gnome 3 / Gnome-shell parts out of experimental. It's been a learning process to be sure. I'm not at the point yet where I'm relying fully on the Linux install and may n...

Re: Gnome3-mint 11

I've been keeping up to speed with the changes in Gnome 3, and I have to say I think it looks absolutely fantastic. I'm really considering moving to Mint 11 full time if they are using Gnome 3 with the Gnome Shell. I had been using Ubuntu, but Unity just leaves me cold. Gnome 3 by comparison has me...

Re: Gnome3-mint 11

I am currently running Gnome 3 / Gnome shell from the experimental repos on an LMDE install which has been upgraded to the unstable distribution. I find myself liking it more and more as I use it each day. Right now things are still kind of in flux as Debian does not have nearly all of the packages ...

Re: gnome 3 upgrade

I've been waiting to see if some of the python updates would come through and fix it or possibly some other update, but so far no dice. Currently I have about 11 packages being held back when I do sudo apt-get upgrade (with unstable and exper. repos activated and a list of gnome 3 files pinned in a ...

Re: LMDE (Tracking SID, or other non-standard) BREAKAGES!

I've seen this, too. I have Gnome 3 with Gnome shell running and if I try to manually upgrade certain python packages it wants to take it nearly everything, so of course I say quit and get the heck out of there and just let it be held back awhile longer until they get it fixed. I'm pretty sure it's ...

Re: Is there a way to have mintMenu in Avant Window Navigato

I know this is an old post, but yes you can and I have done so. No real skill required. In AWN dock preferences, go to Task Manager, click on Add and in the command dialog just browse to /usr/bin/mintmenu and select. Fill in the description and name and click on the icon to choose a different icon i...

Re: gnome 3 upgrade

The mintmenu currently doesn't work in fallback mode either. It produces the same thing as you posted in either place. Unfortunately I don't know python yet to be able to trouble shoot it much further. Looks to be some differences with parsing or something. Thanks for verifying.

Hmmm--I'm running AWN with Gnome-Shell & it's running well at the moment---I've not enabled Mint Menu in AWN--I'll try that in a bit to see what it is doing....Right now I'm in my sid install, so I can't check versions---will reboot Experimental tomorrow & get all the version numbers for yo...

Re: gnome 3 upgrade

Yes--I had to do some downgrades before I could upgrade to GnomeShell3, then re-upgrade after..all in all a "bit" of fun. It's all in flux right now & I expect a fair amount of breakage before it settles. Very good time to be current in CLI---it is needed :D Maybe you wouldn't mind ch...

Re: gnome 3 upgrade

I have been playing around with Gnome 3 and Gnome-shell also for about 3 weeks now and autocrosser is correct, there are times when updates are being made that a system can get borked really quick. I just spent a couple of days over the weekend with a system that was only partially usable, but after...

Re: LMDE (Tracking SID, or other non-standard) BREAKAGES!

Starting tracking Sid overnight. Upgrade went well. Running audio and wine programs and games fine (WoW has improved framerates), didn't have to config xserver just booted straight into the nvidia beta driver with no dramas (Nvidia 9800GT using NVIDIA 270.30) :D Installed 400+ updates and two new k...

from what I understand from the flamewar the thread between maintainers of udev and base-files became... After the breakage was was discovered base-files pushed an update that no longer creates /run. However if /run was already created the update would NOT remove /run. Therefore folks who upgraded ...
