Re: Why did CSM make boot fail after 3+ years of no problems?

Don't know, what level do you have enabled in Update Manager? And there's no proper system info there, copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here: inxi -Fxz Thanks for the reply. I had Level 3 set in my Mint 18 install, as it was the default. Now, mine on Mint 19.1 is set t...

Why did CSM make boot fail after 3+ years of no problems?

Hello! I have an Asus H170 motherboard that has been running Linux Mint 18 for 3+ years no problem with no BIOS changes. CSM has been enabled, despite booting in EFI mode. For the past several months, I did not do any major software changes and simply applied the recommended updates in the update ma...

Re: Black Screen after rebooting Mint 18. Can’t get into recovery mode.

Is it possible to try another disk in that sata slot :?: I hate to say this, but it's narrowing down to the disk or controller. Man, I disabled CSM and it booted up. Now I just reinstalled for no reason, haha. Oh well, I guess it's nice to have the latest Mint! Well a stupid mistake (CSM never enab...

Re: Black Screen after rebooting Mint 18. Can’t get into recovery mode.

It doesn't matter because you'll be in a chroot so your installed version repos will be used. I decided to reinstall and the weird thing is that I am getting the same problem now with a brand new install of Mint Mate 19.1. The hard drive seems fine since i was able to copy files from it. Man, I am ...

Re: Black Screen after rebooting Mint 18. Can’t get into recovery mode.

It's odd that you didn't fall into a grub prompt. Check your BIOS/Firmware settings to make sure that it's set to boot the Mint disk and not the drive partitioned disk. You can try reinstalling grub - these are the instructions I did manually select the system drive for booting and led to the same ...

Re: Black Screen after rebooting Mint 18. Can’t get into recovery mode.

Thanks for the quick response! So I am currently on a Live session of Mint 19.1. I just mounted my system drive and backed up the files I needed. So if worst comes to worst, I can reinstall. Here is the output to sudo blkid: /dev/sda1: UUID="7FF0-F95A" TYPE="vfat" PARTLABEL="EFI System Partition" PA...

[Fixed] Black Screen after rebooting Mint 18. Can’t get into recovery mode.

I rebooted into a black screen with no blinking cursor or anything. I thought I could get into the grub menu or recovery mode, but nothing works (shift, esc, etc). Any ideas on how to start troubleshooting?

Thanks!

Re: Mate Menu Favorites (uninstalled application stuck in there)

OK finally found the config file: $HOME/.linuxmint/mintMenu/applications.list In there, I was able to find the culprit .desktop file. In my case, it was location:/usr/share/applications/ghb.desktop Unfortunately, deleting the line didn't work. There appears to be something running that updates the f...

Mate Menu Favorites (uninstalled application stuck in there)

There is an issue in the MATE menu Favorites section where if you uninstall an application that is a "favorite", the uninstalled application leaves a blank spot in the Favorites menu. Normally, to fix this, I would reinstall the application, un-favorite it, and then uninstall the application again. ...

Re: How is Mate's support of Openbox Applications Menu?

xenopeek, Thank you SO much... your troubleshooting methodology is impressive. I first did the ldd command, and the libraries all matched yours. I also confirmed only one file for libdconfsettings.so. But when I checked which gsettings , I got /home/me/anaconda3/bin/gsettings . Anaconda is the Pytho...

Re: How is Mate's support of Openbox Applications Menu?

xenopeek,
here's a screenshot of dconf-editor compared with the output from gsettings. This is kind of weird, huh?

Re: How is Mate's support of Openbox Applications Menu?

gsettings stores settings in the dconf database so that's not possible. There may be some difference because I used Linux Mint 18.3 MATE. I don't have 18.0 here so perhaps it stored things elsewhere. Check in dconf in /org/mate/desktop/background if you select show-desktop-icons, what is says the S...

Re: How is Mate's support of Openbox Applications Menu?

Oh cool. Thanks for showing me that! Weird thing is that gsettings has show-desktop-icons as "true" and my dconf-editor has it as "false". So there is maybe some disconnect between the settings. I plan to dig around into it a bit more tonight to see if I can figure out what is happening there. I won...

Re: How is Mate's support of Openbox Applications Menu?

Hmm, weird, just took a look at gsettings list-schemas and was unable to find a schema that my dconf-editor has access to. Mainly org.mate.desktop.background . That is the schema where I can edit "show-desktop-icons" to false in dconf-editor. But gsettings does not have access to the same schema. Fo...

Re: How is Mate's support of Openbox Applications Menu?

Ahhh sweet, thanks! Love that I can do that with a command in the future. And it looks like MATE is still the best DE for me. Gives me the best parts of Openbox within a fully featured desktop experience.

How is Mate's support of Openbox Applications Menu?

Hello, I am currently on Linux Mint MATE 18.0. One feature I always want on my desktops is the Openbox Right-Click Applications menu (right click anywhere on the desktop and get an applications menu). I was able to get it to work on MATE by: Installing openbox and obconf. Choose Window Manager in "D...

Re: What happens after 2021 with 18.x?

For nearly a decade, I had a separate /home partition. But lately, I stopped. I prefer to back up only the configurations I care about, which is surprisingly little. A like having a fresh /home drive with a fresh install.

Re: Need help setting up Geany for Python (or sublime text)

Ah, didn't realize he installed Geany from somewhere else. I agree, the one in the software manager just works, and has worked through multiple versions of Linux Mint for as long as I remember. When I install Mint, one of the first things I do is go into Geany's build settings and change python to p...

Re: Need help setting up Geany for Python (or sublime text)

Just curious what happens if you go to Preferences > Terminal > and click "Execute programs in the VTE". Does it execute in the virtual terminal? What is your terminal setting in Tools? Mine is: x-terminal-emulator -e "/bin/sh %c" And my Terminal Shell setting is /bin/bash Might want to check those ...
