Re: Help with Firmware and WiFi Please

Reboot and log in. Available wifi networks should be displayed and you should now be able to select yours.

Re: Help with Firmware and WiFi Please

Is firmware-b43-installer installed?

If it isn't, install it and reboot.

Re: I'm a Linux Newbie, wife wants to stay with Windows7

It's very easy to set up and risk-free, provided you backup all your user data and keep a W7 install disk handy in case of a catastrophic event (which is unlikely). So once you've backed up your data and feel secure that you could reinstall W7 + user data if something went wrong (highly unlikely, as...

Re: fallback mode

A tweaked fallback mode is the default DE for Trisquel, a 100% free Ubuntu-based distribution. It looks beautiful to me, and works absolutely fine. I don't know what the plan is for the next Trisquel LTS release, due next September and based on Precise Pangolin. Of course, other DEs can also be ins...

Re: Mate or Cinnamon?

For all the reasons mentioned above in this thread (most importantly gtk3 support), I wanted to use and like Cinnamon, but it's been too buggy and slow on my machine. MATE on the other hand delivers the same fine experience that I had with Isadora, and so far, has been fast and stable. So a solid +1...

Re: Multiple distros sharing /home

Here's what I do: I have a /home partition that is shared among different distributions. Each distribution has a corresponding folder in /home, in which the users are stored. For instance: /home/isadora/user1 /home/isadora/user2 /home/lucid/user1 /home/lucid/user2 As mentioned above, I make sure tha...

Re: Mint 9, gThumb not working.

The version of gThumb packaged in Mint 9 is quite old (but it should work). I suggest you use a more up-to-date version from the following ppa :

Re: Not much luck with IEEE 1394 and MiniDV camcorder

The only way I ever managed to import films from my camcorder is to manually change the permissions of the raw1394 file that is created each time a device is plugged via FireWire. Something like (I'm not at home so cannot guarantee that this is the exact command line that I use): sudo chmod a+rw /de...

Re: Another DE option for Mint 12 - Cinnamon

Great news!! I was worried about the direction my favorite distribution was taking (honestly LM12 does look weird and inconsistent, Frankenstein-like as someone said), but this sounds and looks positively great. I now have high hopes for the next LTS :D . Thanks clem and the Mint team for the awesom...

Re: Which version of Mint are forum users using, and why?

Proud LM9 (gnome) user here. LM10 was an excellent release too. LM11 never worked well on any of my computers. LM12 seems more like a transitional release than a finished product. I sure hope that the next LTS will be as good as LM9 is, but the trend is worrying (through no fault of Mint - I believe...

Re: Two install annoyances/PO's

2) You also presume I want Mint to take over critical ownership of my system, i.e. booting. As it happens, my system multiboots into what is already there just the way I want it, thank you very much! You should ask me if I want the install to mess with my MBR. Make Mint a less intrusive neighbor! T...

Re: Am I COMPROMISED?!

I was browsing the interwebs... I forgot what I was doing, but I was using Firefox and a website must have executed a drive-by attack which logged me out. Now I am getting logged out every so often and it's really irritating when I'm doing something and I get auto-logged out. This never happened be...
