Re: Unable to install gparted [SOLVED]
Ahhh, thank you @ninomrki, I feel somehow vindicated. 8) I'd been racking my brain trying to recall how I might have removed it. Considering the checks and balances in the system it is hard to remove software by mistake. I've been trying to find a list of all software that's included in the release....

Re: Unable to install gparted [SOLVED]
While browsing I came upon an instruction to run 'apt-get upgrade' in a thread on a totally unrelated matter. Having nothing to lose i ran the command and, sure enough, Gparted was able to be installed. Dunno why that one worked, just grateful that it did. That just leaves the mystery of what happen...

Re: Unable to install gparted
Have you previously uninstalled it, it's already installed on my LM13 cinnamon? No, not deliberately anyway. It's been installed on all my past LM versions also. I can't recall having used Gparted since I installed LM14. It's likely that I used it immediately after installation though I can't...

Unable to install gparted [SOLVED]
I've tried the Software Manager which shows gparted but hitting the install button achieves nothing. Synaptic and apt-get both end with the error message Err http://archive.removed/ubuntu/ quantal-removed/apps gparted amd64 0.16.1-1~removed1 404 Not Found Failed to fetch http://archive.removed/ubunt...

Re: Software manager does not uninstall
Deluge shows as "Not installed" Isn't that correct if you uninstalled Deluge You would think so if your Software Manager looked like this, but then you wouldn't expect to see Deluge showing up in Mint Menu, or the 'About Deluge' window, or the Deluge window appearing under the others. Unl...

Re: No HDMI Sound HP Pavilion DV7
Watch this space. I've not given up on this problem and have yet to solve it. I had hoped to solve this problems on my wife's notebook fairly quickly. It has taken me years to convince her to try LinuxMint on her machine and it's a little galling to get the "I told you so" argument thrown ...

Re: No HDMI Sound HP Pavilion DV7
Installing the proprietary drivers is turning into a nightmare! After finally working out how to execute the .run file I'm being told I need to exit 'X'. At this page it says "begin installation by exiting X". I wasn't even aware I was in 'X', have no idea how to locate it and certainly do...

No HDMI Sound HP Pavilion DV7
We are running with LinuxMint13 KDE. Sound is OK using kaffeine through on-board speakers and works fine on TV through HDMI cable using Windows. All settings appear correct unless there is something I've missed.... snapshot1.png snapshot2.png snapshot3.png My specs are... kathy@kathy-HP-Pavilion-dv7...

Re: Does LMDE Xfce Still Exist?
You can of course still use Xfce on LMDE. Please excuse my ignorant persistence but we've been successfully using LMDE Xfce in our ASUS EeePC for a couple of years now. To put it simply, it just works. How, apart from resorting to an "Unofficial" version, can we expect our little netbook ...

Does LMDE Xfce Still Exist?
I've just read in this thread that (according to that member) the Linux Mint Debian team are no longer supporting Xfce. Yet, I can find no other announcement anywhere in this forum or on the blog site.

Re: Using 'obsolete' distros
My guess is that the dangers would be fairly minimal. However, if a year down the line somebody manages to empty your online bank account... I can't be certain, but this statement seems to me to be the epitome of the FUD type comment of which most posters to this site accuse Windows devotees. I'm s...

Re: I'm afraid about Mint's future
I remember main frame IBMs and Univacs and inputting data on punch cards You win, yours is bigger than mine. As @xenopeek so succinctly put it "How did we get this old"? Without trying to highjack the thread I suppose, like most old timers, I can't help but envy today's up and comers who ...

Those kids are awesome I hate to admit it but that author's two-year-old probably knows more about CLI than I do. AND, I was very resistant to using a mouse at all when they first came out. If I recall correctly, I might have said something along the lines of it was a tool for idiots who wer...

Now Where Did I Store those 5" Floppies? 5"?? Who remembers using 8" floppies ? In an IBM Series/1 ?  Back in the time when Windows was just one of several OSes trying to expand on DOS ? Unix was around then and it's still around and thriving. Mint is just one end of...

Re: Convert file from .pdf to .odt
Thanks to you both for your replies and I'm sorry it's taken so long for me to get back to this. I looked at Xournal as was suggested in your link @Fornhamfed but it was basically just overlaying a text layer on the document and re-saving it as .pdf. When you open a .pdf file with LibreOffice (when ...

Convert file from .pdf to .odt
I can find many applications that will convert from .odt to .pdf but I can't seem to find any that'll do the reverse. I've recently had a spate of forms to complete that only come in .pdf and my handwriting is atrocious. Many years ago I had a program (can't remember its name and prob pirate anyway)...

Re: How to install LinuxMint (KDE) from a DVD or USB?
I have just tried UNetbootin, but it doesn't have the latest versions of LinuxMint 13 Sorry, it's taken me a couple of days to get back to this. You can use UNetbootin to instal any version of an Operating System that you can download. Just download the .iso file of the Linux OS that you want to tr...

Re: How to install LinuxMint (KDE) from a DVD or USB?
I downloaded ISO file and created USB installation stick. What program did you use to create the stick? In my experience, and regardless of what others have said, the only USB flash drive method I've found that successfully installs Linux in general, and Mint in particular, is UNetbootin. The progr...

Re: SSD for Dummies Quick Question
My first computer was a Commodore 128; back in the days when "640K of RAM was more than would ever be needed". Since then I've bought for myself and companies I've worked for many versions of new hardware and software as they came out. I'm not a techie, just some poor idiot that used to re...

Re: Important fixes idea
I'm a Mint/Linux newbie overall and know next to nothing about LMDE in particular (I do run it on an ASUS EeePc which performed flawlessly during a serious flogging on a recent overseas trip) BUT, the reason I was attracted to LMDE in the first place was the idea of never having to do 'fresh' instal...
