Re: Too many choices

lol ... no such thing as too many choices imo. How do ya eat an elephant ? A bite at a time. Agree with the person above in that much of gnu/Linux is choice, preference, application ... blahblahblah. What I like, you might hate and vice versa. If you've tried a bunch firsthand and can't figure out w...

Re: Can't install linux mint stuck on 4th step

Might want to better describe what the 4th step is ... Which step, at which point ? Which install option are you choosing ? ie: Install to whole disk, install alongside ... something else = (manually) ? No root filesystem defined likely means you haven't created partitions and choosen one of them to...

Re: How well does Mint work on a Macbook Pro?

Overall ... have no idea. Am not a mac user. But considering already over my posting limit anyway and just posted summin trying to help some other person trying to install Mint onto a Mac. Figured why not repost a link to that thread here. It's a bit dated from 09' but still you may find it interest...

Hmmm, well ... if at 1st you don't succeed, read this . :D Mentioned am not up on dual bootin gnu/nix +mac, but that how to looked good to me and seems to cover the parts you're missing or unsure of. It's from 09 though ... Still looked like something someone wanting to dual boot these 2 OS's would ...

Re: Dual boot Mint 10 and LMDE help!

Plug both drives in ... fire up lmde, open terminal ... sudo update-grub There ya go, should pick up and add LM10 for ya. Though you need to leave that OS's ( in your case lmde's) hdd set to boot first in bios too blahblahblah. 2 cents ... Trying to outright share a /home partition between distro's ...

Re: Existing Operating System Not Detected

Just 2 cents ... If you have no freespace on the harddrive, that's likely your trouble. Mint's installer can't install alongside, if it has nowhere to install to. (afterthought) Did you read that link germanix posted ? I didn't, well skimmed it just now out of curiousity. So if you have and followed...

Re: Linux Mint 10 and Windows XP Setup Query

Would honestly think TechnoG or remoulder would be right. Was so simple I hadn't even considered sudo update-grub, lol. Just suggested the changing bios thing, cause you seemed like you weren't all that interested in using XP often anyway. If you only use it once in a blue moon, changing boot priori...

Re: Linux Mint 10 and Windows XP Setup Query

Don't quote me on this ... Might try changing the boot order in bio's to boot the XP drive first when you want to use XP. Only a thought about it with no idea whether XP will work with ya or not. It's oldish M$ afterall ... like all things M$, kinda on the sukyside. Actually fond of XP myself though...

Re: What are the basic differences between DEs'

Pointless 2 cents ... for the most part agree ... xfce or summin like lxde w 1gb of RAM are better choices than the heavier ones. That's the easy answer anyway. Can be a lot to it too imo. Depends on you, your preferences and tastes, so forth. All these things are opensource ... Gnu/Linux software u...

Re: Found firewall (default ufw) disabled one fine day...

Might look this over. And this too. Said it has a link to a tutorial for ufw. Was thinking you could try the terminal command "sudo ufw default allow outgoing" and see if that clears up the net connect probs. Could also try "sudo ufw reset" thought by default ufw disallows any in...

Re: GUI freezes after idle for few minutes

Have no idea what LM12's layout is. But something you could try, assuming the Mint menu and control center are about the same, or at least present and accounted for. Might try looking around in control center for summin like power management and similar. Wherever you can set the controls for the scr...

Link Could look that over, explains a bit about the issues you're having. Can't guarantee you'll find the fix there, can't hurt to look at. Think there's some good tips/info and links in that thread. It's about vista, but the info and many of the headaches ( immovable files) and the solutions apply...

Common occurance ... my feelings ( bad feelings, lol ) towards buntu isn't exactly a secret. Anal forum and forum mods being one of many reasons for it. Re: System freezes (randomly?)

Nothing wrong with that mpiter. Not saying 3's are bad and someone should only apply level 1's/2's. Was just bringing it up, people may not want to apply any and every update that comes down the pipe. Guessing they're leveled and color coded for a reason. Could have absolutely nothing to do with any...

Re: System freezes (randomly?)

Ok I'll add some babbling on this. Not sure if it will help anyone, only some thoughts on the topic. 1. Make sure you have a good install iso, check the md5 checksum of the file and make sure it matches the md5 Mint HQ has posted on the download page. Burn disc at a lower speed and if you have a pro...

Re: MBR screws everything up, doesn't it?

Section 12 of this . Thought of summin, you may have bigger headaches in store than reinstalling grub2. Not sure, but win 2008blahblah, may need to be installed on a primary partition. Just something to check out or keep in mind. Depends on how your hdd is partitioned now, if it does need one, shoul...
