Re: Why linux will not displace windows on the desktop
This is an old thread and i got to it because i am new to this forum, new to Linux and am looking around on this forum to see "what's up". I have visited other forums (not about Linux), directed to it by Google when i was looking for some info on a problem or question. What amazes me is th...

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?
@MALsPa: This is becoming ridiculous. NO ONE ever said that YOU should be stuck with 1, 2 or 3 Linux versions. It was only said that the general user should be given a choice of 2 -3 Linux versions by PREFERENCE, which still means that the general user is still free to choose whatever (s)he wants to...

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?
Well then ...... amen. But then why start a thread about it? Or complain about having only 2% of computers using Linux and asking for the reason? And then saying "We are not at all interested in any feedback unless, of course, we hear what we want to hear". You can't have your cake and eat...

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?
@MALsPa I had a look at Saline. Just the user manual though. Looks interesting and the manual is well written, even the Linux commands are there. Well, i feel a bit lost in these surroundings. What you say above (it being difficult for the Linux community to agree on 2 -3 OS for the general public) ...

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?
Pros for and cons against all those choices. But could someone please tell me why you cannot have both? Namely, many choices for those who want to try them out for their specific goals....... AND IN ADDITION 2or 3 Linux versions that are advertised and recommmended to those who don't want to experim...

Why can't you have it both ways? Doesn't seem so difficult to achieve.

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?
@linuxviolin: Please read my posting carefully.
I said: there is nothing wrong with hundreds of choices, that is, for any of the LINUX FANS. BUT for the GENERAL PUBLIC ..... etc.etc.

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?
As i have said elsewhere on this forum, there is nothing wrong with hundreds of choices; that is, for any of the Linux fans. But for the general public it would be better to advertise 2-3 options to chose from. They just want to go from A to B and the car doesn't really matter. Sorry but it is like ...

Re: need help with usb wifi card
A friend of mine living in South America bought a computer that had an illegal copy of W 7 installed. All kinds of threats by µ-soft. I advised him to get Linux. He downloaded and burned the program to a CD-R. He cannot get into the internet (Linux not installed but run from CD). No connection. He c...

Re: Help with Synaptic Package Manager in Mint
A question about the listings on Synaptic Package Manager. I recently installed Linux (Mint main, 32 bit) from a CD-R that i obtained from a Linux shop. I did carry out some updates but only those listed with 1 and 2. Going to the synaptic package manager i see the following listing: Installed 1422 ...

Re: Better than Google, looking for best search engine
This thread is already an old one. But still..... @ Barryp: By accident i found this Ecosia search engine and was wondering whether it would work on Linux. So I used the "Search" function here on the forum and lo and behold.....it has found its way on the Linux forum. I got to Ecosia by se...

Re: icons in front of topics
Maybe i was not really clear.
Where can i see what each of those icons used for the forum threads mean? I cannot find any list, as e.g. given in "Help" for the icons used in connection with "Synaptic package manager" of Linux Mint.

icons in front of topics
I looked around but could not find what these icons in front of the announcements and topics signify.
Sometimes red, sometimes black, sometimes even "alive".
Did i overlook something?

Re: Separate Home Partition
I have recently installed Linux Mint 10 32 bit in dual boot mode with W 7 64 bit home premium. No prior experience with Linux. Rather than burning the CD with all that could go wrong, i "bought" the CD-R from a LInux shop in the UK (it only had the 32 bit version). It installed without any...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?
Well, i am starting to feel a bit ..... yeah, what? ..... Seems i have started an avalanche. It is good though to clear up things and make clear what Linux is all about. To Inktitan especially: i am not against individualism. Not at all. On the contrary. I am probably extremely individualistic and o...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?
I agree with all the posts above. As i have been asking: why must there be so many versions of Linux? Mind you, not for that small fraction of Linux enthousiasts but for the general public to chose from. For the latter it makes things only more difficult and/or confusing when choices have to be made...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?
Ah well............ without notice it was moved. Now it is much harder to find and if you are landing on this forum as a (possible) new user of Mint to look for some anwsers (which you certainly get in places) and go to "Linux for newbies" you are not any longer confronted with "Why d...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?
Just a question. When I go to "Linux for newbies" the thread is not listed any longer. At least I cannot see it. I can get in by gooooogling for "Why do new people ....etc.". Yeah yeah.... leave it to Mr.G. They must spy out the forum without interruption. Last entry Google gives...
