Re: Poll: Desktop environments

This thread is quickly becoming laughable. By sifting through the comments it is pretty clear that most of the people use KDE or XFCE, which would make sense as they are the only sensible choices for the Main and LMDE editions respectively. Moreover, it is already accepted in the rest of the Linux w...

Re: A Linux experience

I'm going to disagree with the Bodhi Linux suggestion. Very bloated for an E17 distro, 32 bit only, and horrendous package management geared towards complete novices will always keep me away from it. The OP seems to be discovering what being a true "power user" means - and as such, I am going to rec...

Re: Debian 6.0.4 @#$!!!!

Linux users and developers wishing to get more Windows users converting to Linux do not help by suggesting that it's all the users fault when something goes wrong! Very off putting! Who told you we want to get more windows users? Who told you I care? http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm This is wr...

Re: Debian 6.0.4 @#$!!!!

I completely fail to see how "lxappearance" affects your root password. Sorry, but if you don't know what you're doing, it's not Debian's fault. No offence. But Linux is not Windows. If something is wrong, it means YOU did something that shouldn't have been done, be it installing broken packages (si...

Re: Mint Desktop Environment Popularity Poll

I don't see how this will result as anything other than a crushing victory for GNOME 3 breeds such as Cinnamon/Shell etc... The vast majority of Linux Mint users are not technical enough to even install new packages, let alone know what a "different desktop environment" is. So we all know where this...

Re: New to Linux and have questions after new install of KDE

Well, considering it's an ATI GPU, unless you're going to do something that requires putting a fairly substantian load on the GPU (like gaming), you might want to keep using the open source drivers. Especially so if the 3D rendering and shaders work fine as they are. Their proprietary drivers are UT...

Re: Oh Mint12...why don't you love me?

The advent of GNOME 3 and the rest of the stuff it brought with it could seriously be the death of the Linux Desktop. Not all Linux users are dedicated down to their marrow. Many have quit, many will in the future, and I completely understand them. The latest offspring of the GNOME team is the worst...

Re: My first Mint experience

Thanks for all the replies and hints. I re-installed XChat and met some really nice people there. I really like the Linux philosophy; it's all about community and working together to get something done. I think modern society could learn a lot from that. I am really looking forward to learn more ab...

Re: Thanks Clem For A Usable GNOME 3 Desktop!

I was a happy camper using KDE 3.5, but then KDE4 replaced it. I began using GNOME 2.3, mostly with Ubuntu and Linux Mint. But then GNOME 3 came along! For me it's not that user-friendly. I've found that KDE 4.5 and up is pretty good, and that UNITY was usable, but I kept wanting to use GNOME. Now,...

Re: mint 12 kde kernel issue

When you say "doesn't do anything upon boot" you mean after or before Grub?

Because if it's after, it's a kernel issue, if it's before, you've somehow overwritten the MBR.

Re: Whats a good distro friendliness wise between Mint and A

I just had some fun over the past week trying to find a good distro for my wife's 9 year old laptop! We wanted something we could give to our 2 year old that she could destroy and we wouldn't care. Specs: Pentium Celeron 2.8Ghz(obviously the old benchmarking scales, cause it's more like 800Mhz) 512...

Re: HUD - the future of the application menu in Ubuntu

Not one of the better Aethyr rants - there's no sense of development or narrative from earlier efforts, the pointless adolescent anger is not justified by enough moments of unintended comedy and generally the whole thing feels phoned in, lazy yet forced. Still looking forward to your next work but ...

Re: HUD - the future of the application menu in Ubuntu

I am very - mousey-clickey - myself, I hate keyboards, that is why I find gnome-shell to be absolutely the best thing I have ever used and can't really see the point in any of its alternatives, but even so I would still be very interested in trying out hud because I like new ideas. I can't help but...

Re: What is happening to MInt

took time to understand what in Mint the Mint devs have control over They have control over what Desktop they support. And supporting GNOME-Shell was the wrong choice. If people didn't use GNOME 3 on their distros, and if donations to the GNOME project stopped etc we might rid ourselves of this hor...

Re: Any audiophiles here?

So what is an "audiophile"? @ bamboozling: I think you're a bit confused. Pulseaudio isn't a "driver", it's a sound server. ALSA is the driver. By removing Pulseaudio, all you're doing is removing the intermediary between your sinks (usually ALSA sound cards) and your audio sources. In my opin...

Re: No sound in chromium browser, works in Firefox

Yes. You should get to your "Sound preferences" window - there are two ways that I know of, either by right-clicking on the GNOME2-panel sound applet or by searching for "Sound" in the MintMenu. If I remember correctly, in the first tab, you should be able to see all the applications that are curren...

Re: No sound in chromium browser, works in Firefox

Are you using Pulseaudio? It is what manages sound in LM 11 by default. If so, then you need to check that Chromium is being routed to the correct Pulseaudio output device...

If the problem was with ALSA, you wouldn't have ANY sound, since ALSA manages your devices, not your apps.
