Re: Changing file timestamps

The only thing I can think of is touch with the -c or --no-create option.

See man touch and info '(coreutils) touch invocation'

Re: WiFi is not working on a fresh Linux Mint installation

The only help I can be with this is to refer you to https://askubuntu.com/questions/983251/ ... d723-issue

You have a card that's not yet supported by the kernel.

There are other results with a "Realtek Device d723" google search.

Good luck

Re: python purge oh crap

The quickest way to recover from this is to reinstall. You purged most of your critical system components. I did a simulated apt purge -f python3 and this is what it would do The following packages will be REMOVED: apt-clone* apt-xapian-index* aptdaemon* apturl* apturl-common* byobu* caja-gksu* comm...

Re: Isolate the most essential files required for a normal boot?

mrodent, You can retrofit a separate home partition for your files or just create a partition and store your files there. As far as installed packages are concerned, you can't install them to other than where the package manager installs them. For example dpkg -L gimp will list every file associated...

Re: Newbie here. Can't log into Linux after careless use of "chown" commnand

Am I sure that that I created a separate partition for /home? I'm pretty sure. When I installed Linux Mint, I took the "Something else" option for the Installation Type and created the three partitions manually, similar to the way guide lays out a dual-boot installation: https://www.tecmint.com/ins...

Re: Newbie here. Can't log into Linux after careless use of "chown" commnand

Are you sure about the home partition :?: The standard installation does not provision a separate home partition. Even if you have one it's still recommended that you copy anything you couldn't do without to an external media as a safety precaution. The easiest way to recover your files is to boot t...

Re: Newbie here. Can't log into Linux after careless use of "chown" commnand

jomama, Yep, you did exactly what I thought you did and changed every files owner:group to you :? Consider this a learning experience and just reinstall - it's the quickest solution and much less painful than reinstalling Windows. When setting up a mount point for your external media use the /media ...

Re: Newbie here. Can't log into Linux after careless use of "chown" commnand

Hello jomama Welcome to Linux Mint and the Linux Mint forum :) If you did what I think you did, you made the ultimate neophyte mistake. In the recovery mode console enter ls -lh / If your user name shows instead of root as the owner and group then a re-installation would be the easiest and quickest ...

Re: Cannot create disk image - permission denied

You should use dd

sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdd bs=4M status=progress && sync

Make sure non of the partitions were auto-mounted by the live session before mirroring.

Re: Confused by auto-mount settings

You can setup the drives to mount at boot by adding them to the /etc/fstab file.

If you paste back the results of sudo blkid we can assist with setting that up.
