Re: recovery console after installation
SOLVED It was a bios problem. From mint 13 I copied /dev/sda9's /boot to /dev/sda5; then modified /etc/fstab on /dev/sda9 to mount /dev/sda5 as /boot; then fixed the symbolic links for vmlinuz and the initrd image. Ran update-grub, rebooted and had lmde up and running. Basically the bios couldn't '...

Re: recovery console after installation
I am pretty confused. I have seen some postings that indicated issues with bios ide uuid emulation but have not tracked them further. In further troubleshooting I have looked closer at the UUID issues and note the following: 1. UUID in the error message (see 1. below) 2. output of blkid (from the ru...

recovery console after installation
An older Dell laptop (non PAE Inspiron 600m) with mint 13 xfce and windows xp. Decided to try lmde 32-bit MATE. Tried this three different ways - from a DVD, and from a couple of usb sticks. On the mint 13 installation I have separate /, /boot, and /home partitions. I first tried to install to / wit...

Re: My desktop (v12 gnome) doesn't look right
I have set a custom background (from one of my own photos), otherwise I haven't touched the session. In a gnome classic session it shows that I am using the default theme adwaita. I don't know how to bring up a terminal to invoke cinnamon --replace from within a cinnamon session. If I try it from CT...

Re: My desktop (v12 gnome) doesn't look right
The desktop looks fine in the other options that I have (Gnome, Gnome Classic, Gnome Classic (No effects), MATE). I am not sure which is Gnome (MGSE) from the above names. I infer that there is not an easy fix since radeon is not supporting my older driver for my Dell Inspiron 600m).

Re: My desktop (v12 gnome) doesn't look right
My cinammon desktop has nothing except the background. No menus or icons of any kind and mouse clicks have no effect. The system works fine with MATE, but cinammon is unusable. I'm not sure what to do with the above hints since they all seem to imply going through some menu options. I get back to MA...

Re: Epson scan
Solved. Searched Epson for drivers which sent me to avasys website. Downloaded 3 files: iscan_2.28.1-3.ltdl7_i386.deb ; iscan-plugin-gt-x770_2.1.2-1_i386.deb ; iscan-data_1.13.0-1_all.deb Installed with sudo dpkg --install *.deb in the order iscan-data, iscan_..ltdl7, iscan-plugin. Launched xsan and...

Re: Epson scan
I still have the problem, and I would really like to use this scanner with mint 12, and particularly with kde on mint 12 because my 35 GB of pictures is managed with digikam and gimp from this machine. I have the pictures NFS mounted off of a turnkey fileserver, so I can in fact work on them from th...

Re: Epson scan
Same question. I have an epson v500. On my machine (which also has bootable Windows XP and lubuntu 11.10 partitions) simply rebooting into lubuntu 11.10 has the scanner recognized and xsane (or for that matter simple scan) works fine. In Mint 12 (which I may have an excess number of desktops on - ma...

Re: Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" RC released!
Attempt to install failed. The live user seemed to work okay, so I decided to install. I couldn't get past 'chosing a picture for my user account' because the continue button was off screen (below). I suspect this is due to the screen dimensions of my HP mini-210 netbook, on which I am currently run...

Re: HowTo: Using Gigolo to Mount Remote Samba Shares
This is kind of a solution for the LibreOffice write permission problem.
'ln -s .gvfs/<MOUNT NAME> foo'
Then save/write to '~/foo/NEWFILE, works

Re: HowTo: Using Gigolo to Mount Remote Samba Shares
A couple of added comments to my previous post. On the same netbook booting different OS's from other partitions. 1. Fedora 15 with gigolo can save new files to the windows share with LibreOffice. This OS also needs gigolo to prevent a hang with an fstab mount of the CIFS fileshare. 2. Mint 10 with ...

Re: HowTo: Using Gigolo to Mount Remote Samba Shares
Pardon me if this is 'drift'. I have been successfully using gigolo to mount a windows share. With Mint 11, however, I am having problems with a windows share mounted by gigolo and Libre Office. I can copy a new file to the share. eg., echo "something">footest;cp footest ~/.gvfs/sharename/...

Boot splash illegible
Mint 11 default splash screen is a very bright gray with white text for boot choices. The white text is very difficult to see on my HP mini 210 netbook. I have several OS's in partitions: Mint 11 RC, Mint 10, Fusion, and Windows 7. I do most of my work in Mint 10 and I'm investigating Mint 11. I do ...

Re: Wireless network and unmounting network shares
A little extra information. My system is an HP netbook (mini 210-1010nr). Wireless is Broadcom with the STA driver and I'm using WPA-2 Personal. Hang does not occur with wired connection CIFS mount, only with wireless. Gigolo works fine with Mint 11 RC, so I will be using that and have the /etc/fsta...

Re: Wireless network and unmounting network shares
My CIFS share mounted in Mint 10 did not have shutdown problems. I copied the relevant line from my Mint 10 /etc/fstab to my newly installed Mint 11 rc (32-bit) partition. The share mounts fine, however, on shutdown|reboot the system hangs requiring the 5-6 second power button hold. If I do a sudo u...

Re: How to Disable Trackpoint or touchpad?
I installed mint 10 gnome on an hp mini 210-1010NR netbook. In the Fedora related world people use a sourceforge app called jupiter. Among other things it allows you to toggle the touchpad on and off. I followed the instructions from http://www.webupd8.org/2010/07/jupiter-ubuntu-ppa-hardware-and-pow...
