Re: How to edit / fix Places menu

Yes it has been a few years since Gnome 2 was forked and renamed MATE, and I'd agree that MATE has evolved into its own separate DE, but it is still the closest to Gnome 2 in look, feel, and layout than any other DE.

Re: How to edit / fix Places menu

I cant seem to make any headway with that approach. Not sure where to look or what the Places>Home Folder command is. I remember I had a PointLinux MATE installed and it had a GUI facility to dig down into the caja configuration files and make any changes necessary. There doesn't seem to be that fac...

Re: How to edit / fix Places menu

I posted in the MATE forum subsection and I assumed the DE I was discussing would be obvious. Apparently not. This is about a MATE. MATE is Gnome 2, or a fork of it after the Gnome 2.x series was dropped in favour of Gnome 3. I use MATE because I prefer Gnome 2 to Gnome 3. No old packages were insta...

How to edit / fix Places menu

Recently installed 18.2 and everything is working okay except the Places menu (As usual, I replace the default mint slab menu with the traditional Applications - Places - System gnome 2 menu that I am used to) The first two items in the Places menu, Home and Desktop, result in the Package Installer ...

Re: mint 13 blues (after upgrading from mint 10)

Actually I'm not looking for "total anonymity" - just away t access sites blocked here in the UK, like the pirate bay. The problem with running Tails as a live distro is that you can't save anything easily. I guess I just miss the older mint versions where everything worked and worked fast...

Re: mint 13 blues (after upgrading from mint 10)

Hi thanks, that should work but it the problem seems to persist. Here's the output: Launching Tor Browser Bundle for Linux in /home/mint13/tor-browser_en-US ./start-tor-browser: 219: ./start-tor-browser: ./Browser/firefox: Permission denied Tor Browser exited abnormally. Re: mint 13 blues (after upgrading from mint 10)

A very astute observation. I have looked at the properties and made the start-tor-browesr file executable and when I click on it it offers me the option to run in a terminal, as I had used to success before. Now however, the terminal appears for a brief second and then disappears, crashes/, and the ...

mint 13 blues (after upgrading from mint 10)

So I figured I should finally upgrade my mint 10 to mint 13 because it has long term support, not 'obsolete' (yet) and would be just a better system ... right? Unfortunately not so. It's sluggish compared to 10, especially the file manager. Compiz no longer works properly. And worse of all I can no ...

Youtube flash weird colours (blue people)

I have Mint 10 Gnome 2.32 installed with updated repositories and it works like a charm, compiz and all. Possibly the best Mint edition yet, IMHO. Just one little glitch - youtube flash videos are not displaying the correct colours and everybody in them appears blue-skined. Funny at first but now I'...

To use the latest version or stick with the old vesion?

I've been using Linux Mint as my main desktop operating system since version 2.1 (Bea). I have upgrqaded my version to the latest offerings from Mint experiencing many improvements (like wireless networking and compiz-fusion) and some losses (the decent and stable version of Kompozer will no longer ...

Re: Can you access to Distrowatch.com?

Congratulations on fixing the problem linxviolin. BTW, how did you fix it? My ping results are the same. Here's another output: mint@mint-desktop ~ $ dig @8.8.8.8 distrowatch.com ; <<>> DiG 9.7.0-P1 <<>> @8.8.8.8 distrowatch.com ; (1 server found) ;; global options: +cmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<...

Re: Can you access to Distrowatch.com?

Here's the dig command out put:

; <<>> DiG 9.7.0-P1 <<>> distrowatch.com
;; global options: +cmd
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

Just seems to state what the browser says. Or am I missing something?

Re: Can you access to Distrowatch.com?

OK I booted up on a live Tor using distro I had lying around - Incognito / tails 0.9 - and to my surprise it was able to load up distrowatch. Unfortunately when I go back to my installed operating systems it's no go. So if I was wrong and it's not the my ISP blocking the connection - what could it be?

Re: Can you access to Distrowatch.com?

I have not been able to load up distrowatch, com for a few days now on any browser or operating system (two mint, one vector).

I figure it must be blocked by my ISP - I'm on talktalk - a UK monopolistic provider.

Anyone else have this problem?

Re: Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" RC released!

The new interface is certainly a bit of a challenge ;). I was disappointed to discover that this new release has now dropped the option to install in my language - an option I always took advantage of in Mint 9 & 10. Considering there are some obscure, practically dead languages included (like G...

Re: Loss of compiz-fusion effects

Thanks for the ideas. Tried them all but no improvement.

I think I'll just have to learn to resist the temptation of updating a system when everything is working.

Re: Loss of compiz-fusion effects

Hi thanks for the terminal commands. Tried them but none the wiser. It notes that 'there is no rendering method' but that can't be an issue because compiz-fusion can work on this system without installing any extra drivers. As I noted before, the compiz-fusion effects work fine on the live CD and on...

Loss of compiz-fusion effects

I've recently installed a new computer with Mint 10 main edition (the best Mint OS to date IMHO) and it's been working fine for a few days except I've noticed that the compiz-fusion effects I activated (desktop cube and wobbly windows) have stopped working - for no apparent reason. They are still ch...

Re: Poll: Will Linux Mint overtake Ubuntu and/or even Window

Mint may overtake Ubuntu in time simply because it is a better OS and there's no steep learning curve for Ubuntu users.

As for overtaking Windows - probably not in my lifetime. Thistleweb has it spot on in that regard.

Re: Linux Mint 11 "Katya" released!

Hate to pour cold water on the celebrations but I'm not having much luck with Mint 11. The file manger window when opened stays stuck in the top left corner with the task bar out of view. Can't move it or shut it off. The multiple desktops windows don't work - seems frozen or something. I tried adju...
