Re: 17.2 KDE blank screen (mdm) but sound works

I tried to remove bumblebee entirely and install nvidia-prime. That didn't fix the issue. But then I used prime-select to switch to the intel driver, and that worked. I wouldn't call this solved (got to figure out why bumblebee and nvidia don't work) but at least I have a desktop. I'm still interest...

Re: 17.2 KDE blank screen (mdm)

Can you login from tty console? startx -- :2 Thanks for the reply. I did try to just stop mdm (sudo service mdm stop) and then just "startx" earlier, and that didn't work. I tried your version now and it didn't either, but I noticed something that might be relevant in the output: … Loadin...

17.2 KDE blank screen (mdm) but sound works

Hello, This is on a computer I've not used for almost a year. It's an ASUS N55S, with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M chip. I turned the computer on after almost a year of not using it. It booted correctly. Then I installed all available updates, and that's when the problem started. Normally, I'd expect t...

Re: How do you run a script without entering a password

It sounds like you solved it, so I'd like to add the following: Don't add a file that's in your home folder to sudoers! The point of sudo is to not allow someone to execute anything, even if they've hijacked your user. But if sudo can run something in your home folder without a password, any theoret...

This is supposed to have been fixed by an update weeks ago. I wonder why the OP's wasn't.

No, it means Recordable. Rewritable is RW.
I don't see how it's relevant to this topic anyway...

Have you checked the "Issues with KDE apps" section in the release notes? Perhaps that will help.

I think the functional equivalent to Windows' CtrlAltDel is switching to a terminal, as the most common action in both cases is to find and kill a certain process. However I've noticed that it's a lot more common for a Linux system to get so frozen that CtrlAltF1 won't work, than the same to happen ...

To be clear: I was using 15 as a "many more than you probably need" number, not a limit. :)

If you're using UEFI you're probably also using a GPT partition table, so that was unnecessary. You can have 15 primary partitions if you want, and more.

Advice for choosing partition sizes between SSD and HDD

I've ordered the parts for a new PC, on which I plan to dual-boot Mint and Windows 10. I do the same thing on my current PC, but unlike this the new one will have an SSD drive as well as a traditional one and also use UEFI. Specifically: 120GB on SSD 1TB on HDD The way I've divided my current drive ...

Re: Something deletes all documents and most profile setting

This may be a silly question, but it's best to cover the basics: How did you install it? Was it the standard way (the "Install Linux Mint" icon on the desktop) or did you use another method? I'm wondering if the system may "think" it's in Live mode, and only writes new files etc ...

The OP has a point though, in that error messages like these should not be visible to an end user. They should be logged somewhere that only a developer can access.

Re: Grub 2 dosent show windows 10

You probably didn't deactivate Windows' "fast shutdown" feature, which makes the system hibernate instead of shutting down. The partition is now unsafe so grub didn't read it and couldn't determine there was an OS there. If that's the case, you'll need to find how to add an entry manually...

EDIT: I misread your post and thought it was hp-setup that crashed when you tried to connect. On re-reading, I see that's not the case, so the following probably isn't helpful right now, sorry. Still, it may be useful when you manage to get to the next step. I have a similar model, but with USB, not...

You don't say what desktop environment you use so I can't be more specific, but try to go to the screen settings and see how many monitors show up there.
