Update error mint15 XFCE

I just went to do updates on mint 15 (xfce) and received an error message . Re: Upstream X/Wayland Developers Bash Canonical

I care little whether it is Wayland or Mir that succeeds so long as it is the best for the job and gets the (almost) universal acceptance that "X" has had for the last 30 years . That said ,if they do not "GPL" Mir - Wayland all the way . I hope I am wrong but it looks like Linux devolopement , in s...

Mir as a replacement for X windows

With Ubuntu shifting to "Mir" as a replacement for "X" as opposed to Wayland-Weston that they had intended to use , what is the efect of this on Mint ?
Will mint be using "Mir" or one of the other two ?

Partitioning and installing on an SSD

Although I am far from new to Linux - I have just bought a Samsung SSD and need to know if there is anything special I need to do with partitioning an SSD . This is my first SSD so if someone could give me a run through of anything different to using a spinning drive it would be appreciated . In par...

Re: Mint Desktop Environment Popularity Poll

I had to vote for Gnome 2 because that is what my primary machine is running . I also have machines running Gnome 3 Shell ( Gentoo ) Unity ( Ubuntu 12.04 ) Cinnamon ( on my test machine - because I keep breaking it - it was fine at 1.2 and went wrong at 1.3 ) and KDE ( on Mepis ) . In the op's origi...

I like the joke - but the scary thing is that that ( although exaggerated ) looks very like the way the idiot devs. at Gnome are headed .

Re: Gnome 3 Review

Never a week goes by in here without a sanctimonious frothing rant. Just a few points to the above, no one is forcing you to use Gnome Shell, you can use any one of the many alternatives and unless you've been conned by someone you haven't paid a dime of your hard-earned money for Gnome, it's a fre...

Re: Gnome 3 Review

I have to agree with "tzoannop" on almost all points about Gnome 3 shell and this latest version of Fedora brings nothing to the table that would make me want to use Gnome Shell .

not slower, not more difficult, just different. Not only "just different" totally unintuitive ! You have your view I have mine - all of your hard sell will not change my mind ! If everybody had the same view it would be a boring world . Our differing views no more makes you right and me wrong or me...

I would also like to see a Mint 12 remix with Cinnamon as the default / only DE.
Cinnamon is looking better al the time .

Re: Another DE option for Mint 12 - Cinnamon

Imagine Mint 11 on a tablet: there's a nice menu button, push it, choose submenu and find program, easy. Gnome Shell: you can't do it the easy way pressing the windows key, so you press "Activities", a button no larger than the mint menu button, a bit thinner if anything, then you need to press App...

Re: Another DE option for Mint 12 - Cinnamon

And I didn't mean to moan about MATE or Cinnamon, I just don't see them ever really taking off, don't see their potential beyond perhaps a decade at best. And certainly not moaning about Gnome Shell where I like to be, despite glitches and quirks. MGSE soon to become a thing of the past is likewise...

Re: Another DE option for Mint 12 - Cinnamon

I am liking the look of Cinnamon !
Unfortunately I can not try it as Mint 12 will not run on my machine ( FGLRX issues ) .
I hope to try it as soon as AMD fixes their binary blobs . But until then I will watch and see how things progress .
Well done Clem !

Re: Mint Overtakes Ubuntu for #1 spot

I am not so sure, if in two, three or four years time when you go buy a phone, table, netbook, laptop or desktop you can choose between Android, iOS, Windows 8/9 or Ubuntu with Unity what would you choose? I would say that on a Tablet if I ever get one ( which is very unlikely ) Windows 8 and on a ...

Re: [Solved] LM 12 move top bar to bottom

This is looking pretty good ! Unfortunately I am , at present stuck on Mint 11 as Mint 12 will not run on my machine ( Dual HD 6870 Radeons being the cause - "radeon" driver causes the top card to over heat badly and FGLRX is just plain broken for Gnome 3 ) . As soon as (if ????) they can get a work...

Re: ATI/AMD propritary FGLRX graphics driver.

so, there is no way to install any driver on any amd/ati 6xxx cards for now? I do not know about earlier Radeons but on the 6xxx series - none that actually work ! I have a pair of 6870 XFX - They kind of work with Mint 11 but are unusable in Mint 12 . The other PC I have Mint 12 on has Nvidia 8800...

Re: ATI/AMD propritary FGLRX graphics driver.

I have just found out that FGLRX is broken with Gnome 3 in Pinguy as well (latest prerelease on DistroWatch ) . I tried it about 15 mins ago and it does exactly the same as Ubuntu 11.10 and Mint 12 . I tried Fedora but although the install completes all I get on the reboot is a blank screen and scre...
