Re: How to make Chrome as default browser?

I know this is a little late, but figure I would offer this since it solved it for me, and is the easiest solution IMHO. It seems Chrome is not added to /usr/share/applications upon install. Running this command will copy the executionary shortcut to this location: sudo cp /opt/google/chrome/google-...

No worries, it'll just be a few days. I am on vacation right now, but I should be home Sunday and can make it available for you then.

Re: Re: Linux Mint Debian Stable (For Those Running This Set

well, that has been my feeling, too... :( That's why I am looking for a nice, solid, usable Debian-based XFCE system. So far, I am trying different solutions... I've been running Debian Testing with XFCE for the longest time (first 4.8, now 4.10), I use it on my home theater pc, web development lap...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Stable (For Those Running This Setup)

Just as a heads up, I specifically chose the 201101 LMDE ISO because that was exactly 1 month before Squeeze was released; using the 201104 LMDX ISO is fine, but it was released 2 months after stable, so on a number of packages you are actually using later versions than Squeeze. Not saying its a bad...

Re: Re: The "Freeze" is coming - what will you do?

I cast the first "something else" vote :D I have no end of fun lately trying to build non-existent LMDE versions such as pure MATE, pure Cinnamon, a pure GNOME Shell version (my latest), starting from a CLI environment created with a netinstall iso. I can install debian-system-adjustments...

And you like Solus... its made by the same guy that made LMDE originally (Ikey). Interesting.

Re: Why a Debian distro?

Can anyone tell me what the reason is behind a Debian distro? Since Ubuntu is based on Debian and Debian seems to be significantly out of date, why have two flavours? Are there any technical reasons to use the Debian distro over the Ubuntu one? 1) You are about 18 months behind the debate of this i...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Stable (For Those Running This Setup)

My concern with having a Mint repo on the New Stable was that it might bork everything. Is that repository specific to just MATE and Cinnamon, or will it pull in other stuff that will cause me issues running Stable? I was thinking there was a Debian repo somewhere specific to just MATE and Cinnamon...

Re: Log in screen?

I just installed lmde and have everything working but when I go to log out or reboot, it takes me to a console. I have to go "startx" and it takes me back to Mate. How do I get back to the log in so I can select Cinnamon? Robin it appears you do not have a login manager installed. There a...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Stable (For Those Running This Setup)

LifeInTheGrey, have you gone ahead with this experiment? I did, but on a limited scale and in a VM, but even there it performed quite admirably and was relatively lightweight (more than KDE, anyway). The things I noticed were mainly visual: I get the "Me..." instead of "Menu", t...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Stable (For Those Running This Setup)

In truth, if you just have the MATE, Mint packages, and Debian Testing repos set up in sources ... there isnt any need for apt-pinning at all. I found I had to keep the apt pinning in place or the wheezy repo would want to install the non-Ubuntu modified font related files and I lose the nice font ...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Stable (For Those Running This Setup)

Squeezy Very good tip, thanks. I did not have Mate pinned. I just set it up and had a ton of updates to Mate. :D The update I like best is in the System Monitor, the old stretched cat is replaced with a nice MATE logo  Pinning the Mint and MATE repos at the same level means that one won't domi...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Stable (For Those Running This Setup)

Tonight I went ahead and did a full install of the new LMDE RC spin on one of my computers. Everything is working great :-) My plan is to follow it into the new Stable next year. KBD From the moment of its introduction, I have been quite excited about UP4, but also somewhat sad about (a) the dual-i...

... or, change your apt sources to Debian Testing temporarily, install the kernel / headers / kbuild in Synaptic, then switch back. Most would consider that easier than compiling a kernel. This works with the nvidia-driver? When you do it, make sure to upgrade the following as well: nvidia-glx nvid...

Re: Dumped LMDE for now!

Well for that matter, Arch Linux with XFCE is a pretty good deal. I'm using that off another partition (Arch also has "Cinnamon" in its user generated repositories, but I don't want to install all the GNOME dependencies). I've been wating for LMDE to sort itself out for several months now...

Nah, I like Debians, but have never got along with *buntus  . I even tried LM7 and Lisa, but neither flipped my switch. Tried sidux - too many arguments on their forums, obnixious mods; aptosid - sid doesn't get along with this lappy; Debian testing - can't stand Gnome; Desktop BSD - seems li...
