Re: Cinnamon use lot of RAM
Afaik, this will be improved significantly in the upcoming cinnamon 4.0. It will include fixes to cjs (the javascript engine used by cinnamon) that fix problems with garbage collection/memory usage

Installed it on my laptop, seems VERY polished for a beta release. Mint 19 will be great!

Re: resume from sleep results in shutdown
I switched from ubuntu to xubuntu today and started running into a very similar issue (not sure if its the same issue but sounds similar. on my case the power led is still blinking indicating it is suspended, and as soon as I open it then it shuts off). I was already running the latest kernel on van...

Re: Mageia 3
Yeah I gave the mageia 3 gnome live cd a test run. It was literally the worst gnome distribution I have ever seen. Why on earth are they using oxygen gtk for the default theme? It was very ugly and totally unpolished. IMO they shouldn't even bother with a gnome version if its gonna be that bad. The ...

Clem you messed up Mint bad. We can't change the log in screen after the update know. I was looking forward to that and now it goes asay. All we get is that ugly clear screen. If this does not geting better then I will swtich back to 14 and start some new compition to MInt. I've had no problem chan...

Re: Anyone tried Gnome3 lately ?
I thought gnome 3.4 was alright, but gnome 3.6 is terribly buggy. It introduced a huge memory leak (every interaction with the top panel leaks memory and memory usage never goes down), the new lock screen is really buggy and also ignores the "lock screen after" setting in GCC. GDM 3.6 is a...

Re: What do you not like about Cinnamon?
The panel and applets still need a ton of refinement Agree. It really needs a bit more fine tuning. The cinnamon menu is just kind of bad in its current state. the search results aren't very good (gnome-shell overlay and unity dash always seem to give me more relevent results), menu entries get cut...

Re: how to install gnome shell in linuxmint 14 cinnamone
Hi, Does anyone know if there's any trouble using the new GDM3 with Cinnamon (on main Nadia)? I tried it on my laptop just installing 'gnome-shell' and it seems to be OK. But I want to be more sure before I put it on the 'family-PC'. I did not install gnome-session, because it seems to draw in full...

Re: Trimming unneeded Startup processes
Nemo is the file manager, and runs in the background as a daemon, so it launches faster when you open the file manager. In addition nemo is what draws the desktop icons afiak.

Re: Brasero hasn't worked, for years
The truth is: Almost all linux burning programs are buggy mess. wodim is crap, cdrskin (used by xfburn) is crap (doesn't allow speed setting on both my pioneer drives). cdrkit is crap. oh we also have dvd+rw-tools which is also crap, because it only supports DVD. And since all GUI programs depend o...

Re: Sleep and Hibernate working for you?
The networkmanager error is this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1007924. I get the same networkmanager error in my logs, and my suspend/resume works fine though, including reconnecting to my networks automatically on resume.

The two panel layout is pretty far from optimal on a widescreen monitor, especially a low resolution one such as a 720p laptop display.

remoulder, I do agree with you and Miguel de Icaza any chance there ever was for Linux to be a mainstream desktop is long lost. I will go beyond what he says about 'technical fields' and say that in my field, isolation and characterization of proteins, it's non-existent. Everything is Windows based...

Re: Mate or Cinnamon?
Cinnamon all the way for m. The fact that it is based on the more modern GTK3/Gnome-shell base and that it has stable and well integrated compositing out of the box are huge plus's for me. MATE is alright if you don't want compositing or really want to use compiz, I just wish it was based on gnome 3...

Lenovo thinkpads generally have decent linux compatibility.
You can try looking here for well supported models: http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/
Mint is based on ubuntu, so an ubuntu certified laptop should work well.

Re: Sleep and Hibernate working for you?
I run linux on two laptops. Asus U52F: Suspend and hibernate do not work out of the box. I need to use the following script to fix suspend: http://thecodecentral.com/2011/01/18/fix-ubuntu-10-10-suspendhibernate-not-working-bug. To get hibernate working I need to add resume=UUID=UUIDOFSWAP to my /etc...
