Re: How to add a llinks to files and folder into Cinnamon panels

@smurphos Thanks for detailed explanations. I got closest to what I need using the Option 2 with the Panel Launcher applet. I could create links to files and folders. It is indeed a bit cumbersome to create such "links" to certain folder/files but it works. I also checked the various "places" apple...

Re: Upgrade to Mint 20 - from which version?

I will take your advice, and do the clean install. To get to 19.3, I ran the two installations in parallel for a while, until I had copied over all I wanted, ensured the permissions and browser saved passwords, etc. were OK, before pulling the plug on the old version. I will do the same for this cha...

Yes, you need to upgrade to 19.3 first in order to upgrade to 20.

Instructions here: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3838
I suspected as much.
It's a bit of a guess as to whether it is worth going for two upgrades vs putting Mint 20 into a new partition
@hydrurga - my thanks to you!

Upgrade to Mint 20 - from which version?

The instructions on the Linux Mint site explain it is now possible to upgrade the 64-bit version of Linux Mint 19.3 to version 20. That's nice, but my Mint 19.1 "Tessa", which at the time, I believe, was a LTS version with support until 2023. Following instructions to do the upgrade stalled at the p...

Re: Linux Mint on SDDs with F2FS supported?

catweazel - My thanks. I had been reading articles about making things better for SSDs by doing things like turning limiting unnecessary time-stamping with options like noatime set in /etc/fstab, and much more. The fairly elaborate backed up work-around to "convert" an ext4 system to F2FS must have ...

Re: [Solved] System SSD No Longer Detected

It is surprising how similar are our setups, and what we are attempting. I also have a Samsung 860 EVO, and a Dell laptop, except on mine, the laptop already has a Samsung SDD. The 860 EVO is lurking in my main machine, formatted F2FS. I reasoned that since F2FS was developed by Samsung for Linux, a...

Linux Mint on SDDs with F2FS supported?

Do Linux Mint installation downloads allow to be installed on F2FS partitions on a SSD? F2FS was created by Samsung for the Linux kernel to better work with solid state drives and is the one I should like to use for my Samsung SSD. So far, my attempts to install Linux Mint 19.1 (Tessa) with Mate des...

Re: Linux Mint 19 install attempts fail

Are you trying to dual boot with windows or is mint the only OS? Hello Andy The kit is entirely Linux Mint. No dual-boot, and the hard drives have never seen a Windows system nor format from when they were new. If one is going to dual-boot Windows, I long ago discovered the best way is to have only...

Re: Linux Mint 19 install attempts fail

There is always a lag at that point as a connection with repositories is established and multiple libraries are downloaded. Unfortunately there is no on-screen indication of activity but you may notice the pulsing of the disk activity light on your computer (if you are using a desktop computer). Th...

Re: Linux Mint 19 install attempts fail

We may need to know more (than absolutely nothing) about the hardware. So, can you please post the result of the following terminal command, and enclose it in code tags? That's the button marked </> . This is needed for pretty much any question about your system, so it's a good habit to post it str...

Linux Mint 19 install attempts fail

I have tried to install Linux Mint 19 (Mate) from a bootable USB image. The installation attempt always hangs at the very same place, right where the user is given the choice to install third party software for media, WiFi etc - or not. I notice that this fail point is the same, even if I choose to ...

Mint 18.3 on Dell - not Windows10 - not Dual-Boot- just Mint

I have installed Mint 18.3 (Sylvia) onto a Dell Lattitude 5580, which seemed to install OK, but it has never been able to boot up. The USB install stick came up fine, and I clicked on the "Install Linux Mint" icon, and went through the process. Everything seemed to go normally, and when the installa...

Re: Its about the "mouse suddenly stops working" syndrome

OK - I cannot take it anymore! I can clearly see that some process is sometimes randomly delaying USB control to the mouse, and that sometimes it seizes up. Plugging in a USB stick leaves it struggling, even after the stick is unplugged. It has to be something to do with only my setup, because there...

OK - I now have more experiences of "Mouse Pause" I have had a complete freeze after inserting a USB stick that seemed to be taking forever. After re-start, all is well, including the USB stick. Chasing this thing is exhausting! I do note that the condition is not widespread. If it were, there would...

Most posts on this topic relate to Cinnamon . I get the hang during shutdown from a Mint 18 Sarah install using Mate . Steam? what is that? I don't think I have it. Systemd? I am sure that is something we cannot live without, and given the description of it's function, is a very likely candidate for...

Re: Its about the "mouse suddenly stops working" syndrome

Please boot from live USB in version 17 and 18 and test the mouse. If mouse works ,we can say that there is a software problem. If live USB Mint does not work, try changing USB port for the mouse. @deepakdeshp - thank you for the reply. The live USB containing Mint 17 was erased, to use to make a l...
