Re: Why not go directly with Debian?

Clearly understood, more power to you. To clarify the Mate in Linux Mint thing: 1. Mate 1.20 in Debian Stable is for sure older, Mate 1.22 was published in March of this year. 2. Mate 1.22 is different, there are some refinement in the panel, but Mostly the Applications that are bundled with Mate ha...

Re: File Manager gets stuck in Panel Mate 18.0

Odd numbered versions (1.23) are in-house testing, never released.
Mint doesn't have the entire Mate ... You may want to install each of the individual packages from the Mate website, or try another distro.
Best of luck

Re: Caja 1.20.2 rename bug

has anybody filed a bug report? (I looked, I don't see any reports on this)

I can't reproduce it so a third hand report does no good.

xenopeek: that's unfortunate
Can you tell us what ISO you are using?
Installer, the Debian or Calamaris?
Desktop?

I obviously am having the opposite experience, but I use default language and mirrors.

Re: Debian 10 "Buster" was released

I am a dedicated Mate user. When Ubuntu dropped Gnome2 I went looking. Stayed with the holdouts that used Gnome2,,, Pinguy and Solus mostly. Mint had a offering of Mate that was useable, so I migrated. LMDE was my cup of tea, Mate of course... then that got super funky and finally died. Jessie Mate ...

look at a map... faults, and earthquakes are very localized.
nothing to worry about... unless you are in very specific locations. even there it is rather simple to construct with events in mind.

sea level rise? we should all live so long that it actually has any effect, if ever.

Re: Unusual Booting problem

apparently GRUB is installed on your USB device. Start your Linux session In a terminal run sudo blkid *note the location of the fixed drive on your computer.... probably it will be sda and you would see something like this: /dev/sda*** If it is sda, run this in a terminal sudo grub-install /dev/sda...

Re: Can a webapp mount my disk?

I am sure it is possible to enact a password requirement... but personally I don't know how, nor am I motivated to try to figure it out.

"user friendly" is your goal. you have that.

Re: LMDE3 - Install Complete MATE Desktop

@ scottydog That is a tough question. I think you would probably be better with Mate on top of LMDE3 as a "died in the wool" Mate fan, neither are my true "favourite" Mate version, and features... but both are OK neither version would be a real "lightweight" but LMDE3 is more compatible with modern ...

Re: Solus OS

I believe I read that Ikey Doherty (the developer) left Solus a month or two ago, he wrote a going away letter. Rumor was that he got booted out by some others. Whatever the case, I suggest you go to them and ask for help. https://getsol.us/help-center/home/ =====PS I searched "Ikey Doherty" and fou...

I am not an expert, just drawing from personal experience...

just install Grub on sda. if that does Not work then try sdb... and then try sdc if necessary.

Re: Mint on separate HDD, no boot options

let's start by getting a list of your partitions run this command in terminal, enter password when asked (it will not display anything in the password field) sudo blkid now, you have a list of partitions ... probably the BIOS wants to boot to sda run this code in a terminal sudo grub-install /dev/sd...

Have you tried any other distros? (non-Mint) ?

I had a Asus Eeepc but I gifted it a couple years ago. Nice units.
I was able to overcome that resolution problem, don't remember the details.

Re: Repository for Debian

Imagine there is Debian as a distrubion and Mint, Deepin, Neon, Elementary, Ubuntu etc. are all just skins. I'd like for Mint to pioneer this idea - allow Debian users to just install it as a skin, with all the configs and what not, but in a way that is reversible so one could swap 'skins'/have mul...

Re: TimeShift can't restore snapshot, stuck on dry run.

Sunday, November 11, 2018 Timeshift is a hog, it sucks up a Lot of disk space! https://preview.ibb.co/fh1cYV/timeshift.png To combat the space problem I created a separate partition for the snapshots. I thought 10 GB would be OK considering the entire system is about 5.5 GB but it got full and I had...
