You can copy all of the Partitions in use to another device.
after you are done you can copy them back.
then you just need to reinstall GRUB so it will boot as expected

Re: removing Cinnamon from LMDE6
thanks to all for your help.
I have been "mostly" successful.
the apt-pinning still prevents Mate from using Current Debian support, so it is working as I would prefer, but this is good enough.

Re: removing Cinnamon from LMDE6
October 15 update: so far my LMDE Mate reconfigured as described above is working OK, with a few oddities. 1. boot is pretty slow, about twice a long as when I boot to Debian Sid Mate on the same drive. not a big deal 2. update is also pretty slow. also not a big deal === 3. I use lean-conky ... a m...

Re: removing Cinnamon from LMDE6
I really appreciate all of the input. I believe I will wait until the Beta goes Final... and see what Clem does in the end. Especially my security concerns. BTW: Another method, just to make Mate "look clean" is to edit the Mate Main Menu to "hide" the undesirable apps, that's j...

Re: removing Cinnamon from LMDE6
And when you clicked that updated, which packages did it show were in the update? In the details tab. Most likely some library package. A package that other programs can use to interface with Nemo (if that is installed). I don't recall which specific packages if they were actually shown, I just too...

Re: removing Cinnamon from LMDE6
I decided to resume working on my quest this morning. But updates were indicated. Unfortunately the Update Manager does not want me to remove things... Nemo (aka xed) was specifically removed, but Update Manager reinstalled it. oops 2023-09-23 05-46-20.png I'm about ready to consider this a failed p...

Re: removing Cinnamon from LMDE6
A bit of off-topic: Is there any advantage for you doing all this on LMDE instead of directly installing Debian Mate ? great question, lengthy answer... but briefly: My primary systems are all Debian Mate. No complaints. (I don't install with those Live images you linked. I don't care for the Calam...

Re: removing Cinnamon from LMDE6
apt purge cinnamon* muffin* nemo* should uninstall most if not all Cinnamon, Muffin, Nemo related packages. Side effect (on Mint 21.2) it also uninstalls Xviewer. You can browse what is in the LMDE 6 repository here: http://packages.linuxmint.com/list.php?release=faye. So you can selectively uninst...

Re: removing Cinnamon from LMDE6
so far I only install mate-desktop-environment-extras using synaptic I don't use Linux Mint at all but I assume the desktop configuration I get is the same as Mint, it is very different than the conventional Mate we get with Debian. my test machine does not have bluetooth hardware and I don't use/n...

Thanks.
I will try and see.
I forget the details but in the recent past I have totally borked it and had to reinstall.

removing Cinnamon from LMDE6
good morning I have been using the LMDE6 Beta and have run into a stumbling block. I use Mate desktop environment. Not just the Mate Panel, but all of the Mate apps. (not the downstream modified versions, the versions created and maintained by the Mate developers) ... the problem I have is removing ...

Re: LMDE or Linux Mint?
I suggest Debian with one of the lighter desktops. my personal favorite is Mate. Not because of the "weight" but for the features and ease of editing tip: install mate-desktop-environment-extras ...MATE Desktop Environment (extra components, metapackage) Cinnamon, Gnome, and KDE seem to be...

Re: Swap partition or swap file (on a ext4 partition)?
Swap partitions have also another problem: If there is one and you want to install a second instance of Linux, this swap partition gets automatically used and you have later to remove it from the system manually. that "swap partition gets automatically used" problem is not universal. A Go...

Re: Swap partition or swap file (on a ext4 partition)?
Swap files have the advantage, that there is more flexibility in case, you later need to change the partition layout. Swap partitions have also another problem: If there is one and you want to install a second instance of Linux, this swap partition gets automatically used and you have later to remo...

I don't believe that software killed the drive.
Replace it and move on.

Re: What caused my SSD to get ruined in Mint 21.1 install?
What about simply reformatting the drive to MBR using Disks? I tried both ATA enhanced secure erase and overwrite with zeros. In both cases it executes without complaint, the partitions graphic even goes green all the way across showing it's changed to a single partition for just an instant. Then I...
