Re: Connection Problem

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. But kudos for tackling the build-from-source process on your own. I'm also sorry to see you have that Ralink wireless. Those cards have been a problem generally, not just for Linux users but for Windows users too. Here is a download page for Linux drivers for t...

Re: Connection Problem

I know this question might sound absurd but, do I need to do something with my drivers? I am always getting disconnected from my wifi ( disconnect, then connected again after 3 seconds) but that is nothing happening in my mom's laptop(windows). This kind of thing wasn't happening to me when I was i...

Re: Moving panel in Cinnamon

@ dwasifar: Can I make the panel vertical? Actually that is what I want :) No, I think the options are only top or bottom in Cinnamon. Gnome-panel has always looked crappy when vertical, though, so you're not missing much. I recommend installing Docky or some similar dock and moving that to a verti...

Re: Moving panel in Cinnamon

You can move the panel. It's in Panel Properties. But you have to restart Cinnamon for the change to take effect.

When you apply these commands manually, are you by any chance doing them with root privileges?

Re: NVIDIA GT216 [GeForce GT 325M] cause of heating?

It looks to me like your system has hybrid graphics. I may not be explaining this well, but essentially the Intel chip is the primary display, but offloads the processing for more heavy-duty graphics load to the Nvidia chip. There is a package called Bumblebee that might improve things for you. Chec...

Is it hot all the time, or only when you're doing video-intensive things?

Re: Little help please....PSF on Mint 14 Desktop

Looks like an auto-mounted external drive. But I imagine you would know if you had a 4.4TB device connected.

Open a terminal and type sudo mount and show us what output you get.

Re: Please help me with script formation

Try adding:

Code: Select all

sleep 30s
after the #!/bin/sh but before the first xrandr command.

Re: Please help me with script formation

Well, you already know the specifics of what you want your script to do, so you're more than halfway there. Here are the steps. Open the gedit text editor (or other text editor of choice) and enter the following four lines: #!/bin/sh xrandr --newmode "1440x900_60.00" 106.50 1440 1528 1672 1904 900 9...

Thanks. :)

For those not so impressed by my powers of description, here's a picture of what I mean. In this screenshot the dropshadow is off from the clock itself by hours and hours.

Re: Cannot load webpages via wireless connection

1) Copy that script into a text file and save it, with name of fixmint13.sh, to your home folder. You want to start copying with line: #!/bin/bash and then end with line: reboot 2) Open a console window / terminal. It should open in your home folder. If you type ls and hit enter you should see the ...

Odd little bug in Cinnamon panel clock

I'm running Mint 14 with Cinnamon, using the Tout theme. This theme has a light gray gradient on the panel, dark gray text with a white dropshadow behind the text. I know that typically dropshadows are achieved in GTK themes by drawing the text twice - once with the dropshadow color and then again w...

Re: Why does Gnome Panel font rendering suck so bad?

[It looks to me though, that they wanted to make the fonts bold and large for readability, maybe? Canonical and ostensibly the Gnome devs were obsessed with attracting those "millions of new users" who had never used a computer before, at one point. I dunno, just bored and guessing. Maybe. Certainl...

Re: Why does Gnome Panel font rendering suck so bad?

Well, yes, I suppose it's called the Cinnamon Panel when we're talking about Cinnamon. :) But I see the same problem in Gnome Shell, so I assumed the issue was inherited from upstream. Thanks for the suggestion about the bitmap fonts. I installed them and tried them. Basically it solves the problem ...

Why does Gnome Panel font rendering suck so bad?

I know this is a Gnome 3 problem, not a Cinnamon problem per se, but why do the panel fonts look so much worse than any other font on the desktop? Subpixel font rendering of the same fonts that look fine on the desktop and in applications is blurred and sloppy in the panel. I keep expecting it to ge...

Re: Why is LM 13 Cinnamon so slow

I'm not sure if your post is a question or merely a complaint, but if you were really asking, the answer is that Cinnamon is based on Gnome 3, which is more resource-intensive than Gnome 2 in Ubuntu 10.10. A Pentium M is ancient as processors go, and Gnome 3 is a strain on it. If you want a Mint exp...

Re: expanding file system

You would have to back up and delete sda2, move sda3 through sda7 forward on the drive into the freed space, then expand sda7 into the resulting free space between it and sda8. You can do all this with gparted from a live CD, though I can't promise that what you wind up with will be bootable. Why do...

Re: Synchronize Normal Settings With Superuser Settings?

You don't. Gconf-editor or mateconf-editor settings are individual to the user account being used. This is by design. When you are operating as root, you are using the root user's profile, and when you're operating as yourself, you're using your personal profile. Each has its own permissions and own...
