If the random freezes happen in both operating systems, that to me points to a hardware issue. Is your computer overheating? Check that all your fans are working properly and heat sinks aren't caked in dust.

Did you say this is a new battery? It's entirely possible it needs to go through a few charge/discharge cycles to calibrate the battery to the laptop.
