Re: Microsoft Office alternative Kingsoft Office for Linux M

OK Brahin. But look, I've been using LibreOffice -and OpenOffice before that - for years. It's great software, it's open source and it supports a slew of languages. It does documents, spreadsheets, drawings and presentations.
What can Kingsoft do that Libreoffice doesn't?

Re: LMDE 201303 Cinnamon Autologin doesn't work

One niggle: the Autologin doesn't work. I just followed the usual routine as with LMDE 2012: Menu --> Administration --> User Accounts. Then unlock (using password), set Automatic Login to ON, and lock again. Right? Wrong! LMDE remembers the setting until shutdown or reboot. Next time I'm faced wit...

Re: LMDE 201303 install a bit weird?

Didn't see this post until now. Thx! That isn't intuitive, but I'll know next time. I guess "twigging" something is Aussie slang for getting the intuition going. Haven't heard that before. Good one! If you're happy with the answer, feffer, maybe you might like to mark this thread [SOLVED]...

Re: LMDE 201303 install a bit weird?

Yes, feffer, to me it looked a bit weird too. But then I twigged that I first had to tick the top radio button which suggested installing on /dev/sda. Continuing to the next screen I then found the usual GParted waiting and I could take it from there. I now have LMDE working side by side with Crunch...

[SOLVED] LMDE 201303 Cinnamon Autologin doesn't work

Just installed LMDE 201303 Cinnamon with 1 single user. Great stuff, I especially like Clem's new live installer. One niggle: the Autologin doesn't work. I just followed the usual routine as with LMDE 2012: Menu --> Administration --> User Accounts. Then unlock (using password), set Automatic Login ...

Re: lost network manager and wireless connection

Sorry, a bit more information. The only menu option I have in mate or gnome classic is Network - when I open it everything is greyed out. In the applet it has enable networking and enable wireless both are ticked, but everything else is greyed out. More help with this will be appreciated. Wow, Mint...

Re: Google Chrome Not Updating

Amplifying cecar's comment somewhat, Ubuntu tends to pull the repositories of any other than long-term-support editions fairly promptly. That's why it may pay you to prefer installing or upgrading to Mint editions which are based on Ubuntu LTS versions. The most recent have been Ubuntu 10.4 (the bas...

Re: lost network manager and wireless connection

You may just have lost the network-manager applet from your taskbar. Try the following: Open your Cinnamon main menu click on -> All Applications. You should find there two menu items: Network and Network Connections. The "Network Connections" one is actually the Gnome Network Manager, and...

Fellow useres if you read this and you don't know how to help fixing the underlying issue, you maybe still know [color=#FF0000][b]some better alternative to clipgrab? Sorry nobody seems to help you with Clipgrab, TheObserver, I couldn't either because I've never used it. I always use DownloadHelper...

@ ausmuso and Penguinnerd: You are replying to quite an old topic, from October of last year. The OP may not be following this anymore. The thread may be old, AlbertP ,but the the subject will always be topical. We all know the scenario, especially those of us who have many friends and relatives. A...

Re: best OS for an ageing system

If you've only got 1GB RAM, Guerillase7en , you certainly wouldn't want to run a 64-bit distro. You won't get any measurable performance gain and you're just buying yourself problems with applications like Wine, Skype and Acrobat Reader, which are still only available in 32-bit version. On your syst...

Re: Installing on hopelessly outdated computer

There's horses for courses, Pottzie. You don't want to weigh down your old laptop with the full Gnome-bloat inherent to Mate and Cinnamon (or Ubuntu, for that matter). Have a look at http://crunchbang.org for a really lightweight system based on the OpenBox windows manager (on which LXDE is based). ...

Re: Where are volume control settings stored?

A strictly volume control applet can be added to lxpanel (rt. click panel>add-remove). For more audio controls, instal pavucontrol . See http://lxlinux.com/#15 . For a slightly more sophisticated solution, install PNMixer . It is not in the Mint or Ubuntu repositories but you can find it at http://...

Re: install minimal LXDE desktop

Hey all. The other question I had: should I add any additional repositories in order to have access to everything LXDE? Is there, for example, a separate repo for Lubuntu? Thanx! No, SiKing, you don't need any additional repositories. I've put LXDE desktops on top of many Mint versions (plus some o...

Re: Unofficial Linux Mint LXDE 13 RC1 released!

Great news, Mati75, keep up the good work! Haven't had time to look at it yet, not only because my cat just broke its leg but also because I'm flat out with a project of my own i.e. starting with Schoelje's unofficial LMDE XFCE UP6 and replacing the XFCE desktop with LMDE. So far so good. It's fast,...

Where exactly are volume control personal settings from LXDE stored?

The answer: somewhere in your machine but you don't automatically get to see them on an LXDE desktop. I solved the problem by installing the Gnome ALSA-mixer and adding it to the desktop.

Re: Please, something that just works!

I don't know that there is any such product, but my Mint 13 (with LXDE desktop) comes closer than anything I've worked with before or since. I've been running it on my daily work computer since June 2012. I took me 2 days to get it set up and working exactly the way I like it and it hasn't crashed o...

oh and can someone tell me how I get rid of the green at the top of my windows on the LXDE desktop. Sorry, Roadrash, I can't quite see your problem. I have been using Mint with LXDE desktops for some years, most recently Mint 13 with LXDE on top, and I have never had a problem getting rid of green ...
