Re: Linux mint and tor onion browser

Tor runs on Linux but unless you're living under an authoritarian and oppressive regime it's really not worth the bother.

Format the target drive to NTFS and it should allow you to copy very large files with no trouble.

Re: Anti-virus protection

None. It's not necessary.
If you're paying for Windows AV then you may well be wasting your money. The free Windows Defender does the job perfectly well.

Re: Update may have broken Mint

This happened to me and despite other forum users' best efforts nothing worked so, being British I just ignored it until it went away. It fixed itself just as mysteriously as it began.

Re: Update problem.

Ridiculous isn't it? I'm tempted to say to hell with it and upgrade to Mint 19 but the problem may still persist.

Re: Update problem.

Here's as much of the terminal output as I can copy. Why I can't do all of it is a mystery yet to solved. System: Host: stephen-Lenovo-Flex-2-14 Kernel: 4.15.0-66-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0) Desktop: Cinnamon 3.6.6 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.3) Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia Machine: System: LENOVO...

Re: Update problem.

None of the above worked at all. I tried shrinking the screenshot but it's still too big to post.
I can select all but any other clicks after right-clicking just cancel it out.
I realise this should be simple and I'm embarrassed that it appears to be such a struggle.

Re: Update problem.

I can't post the terminal output as the select, drag and drop doesn't work Select, then copy (use rightclick menu or shift+ctrl+c) and then paste into a forum message. I can select the terminal text but copy and paste don't appear to do anything, unless I'm missing something obvious. The kernel is ...

Re: Update problem.

Hi iironjade, you said the following, The Update Manager refuses to co-operate and won't let me upgrade/update the kernel OK then, did you open the "view" tab in the update manager yet and click on, "Linux kernels" and scroll to the very latest 4.15.xx in the series and "install it yet???...then re...

see what's wrong with this in Terminal

Code: Select all

sudo update-initramfs -u -k all
"command not found".

Not looking too promising I guess.

Re: Update problem.

Thanks for the info but nothing has made any difference. The Update Manager refuses to co-operate and won't let me upgrade/update the kernel or anything else. it just locks into the "initramf" etc. loop and never finishes.
Maybe fate is trying to tell me to move on to Mint 19?

Update problem (solved by unknown forces).

Over the past few days trying to update results in an error message telling me to run "dpkg configure a" but running it has no effect. Synaptic also gives the same message. It's not something I've ever seen before. Any suggestions?
I'm using Mint 18.3 64bit.

Re: Anyone else have problems with Virgin ISP in the UK?

Virgin's router can be a bit fussy as to its positioning. The installer said it would be fine on its side but it wasn't true.
Their cable box connection also used to be a nightmare.

Re: Why are boot & shutdown so much faster than Windows 10?

W10's start up is deceitful because although the desk top (eventually) appears, the machine is still not ready to use.
Linux Mint, on the other hand, is ready to go as soon as the desktop is visible.

Re: Installing Tor Browser

Tor may be great at keeping things private but I find it to be a very poor browser: it's slow and many sites don't work properly or at all.
Unless you live under a repressive regime or have something to hide, it's hardly worth the effort.
