Re: Random sizzling/grinding noise from hdd

Oddly enough, when I dual booted Widows and Ubuntu on an oldish laptop, the drive would click horribly with Windows but made not a peep with Ubuntu. The machine lasted for years too.

Re: Why does Update Manager suggest bind9 to be installed/updated on desktop?

Just "We are unable to find that website" or similar from Firefox and Chrome. No other software that I know of. It didn't take long to identify bind9 as the culprit.

Re: Why does Update Manager suggest bind9 to be installed/updated on desktop?

I dutifully installed the bind9 update and found that I could no longer access the Internet on any browser. I had to use Timeshift to get everything working again.

Re: Can't format SD-Card: says write-protected but it's not!

I also had this happen with a SanDisk card. It suddenly decided it was read only when inserted (with an adaptor) into my laptop but in my tablet(minus adaptor) it was fine. No idea why.

Re: Safely Remove USB Drive does not display message

So, I'll just say it - this is a bad design. When I right click on a device and select Safely Remove Device, three things happen: Short delay and the icons for the device vanish from the desktop. Then, a short delay and the wewooweet USB disconnect sound-effect happens. Then, a (good) few more seco...

Re: Linux mint and tor onion browser

Tor runs on Linux but unless you're living under an authoritarian and oppressive regime it's really not worth the bother.

Format the target drive to NTFS and it should allow you to copy very large files with no trouble.

None. It's not necessary.
If you're paying for Windows AV then you may well be wasting your money. The free Windows Defender does the job perfectly well.

Re: Update may have broken Mint

This happened to me and despite other forum users' best efforts nothing worked so, being British I just ignored it until it went away. It fixed itself just as mysteriously as it began.

Ridiculous isn't it? I'm tempted to say to hell with it and upgrade to Mint 19 but the problem may still persist.

Here's as much of the terminal output as I can copy. Why I can't do all of it is a mystery yet to solved. Re: Update problem.

None of the above worked at all. I tried shrinking the screenshot but it's still too big to post.
I can select all but any other clicks after right-clicking just cancel it out.
I realise this should be simple and I'm embarrassed that it appears to be such a struggle.

Re: Update problem.

I can't post the terminal output as the select, drag and drop doesn't work Select, then copy (use rightclick menu or shift+ctrl+c) and then paste into a forum message. I can select the terminal text but copy and paste don't appear to do anything, unless I'm missing something obvious. The kernel is ...

Hi iironjade, you said the following, The Update Manager refuses to co-operate and won't let me upgrade/update the kernel OK then, did you open the "view" tab in the update manager yet and click on, "Linux kernels" and scroll to the very latest 4.15.xx in the series and "install it yet???...then re...

see what's wrong with this in Terminal

Code: Select all

sudo update-initramfs -u -k all
"command not found".

Not looking too promising I guess.

Re: Update problem.

Thanks for the info but nothing has made any difference. The Update Manager refuses to co-operate and won't let me upgrade/update the kernel or anything else. it just locks into the "initramf" etc. loop and never finishes.
Maybe fate is trying to tell me to move on to Mint 19?
