Re: First day with Linux - integrated Wifi not working

Unless it's a matter of life and death, I wouldn't bother trying to get Office to work. Use LibreOffice instead.

Re: External device not recognised

Mint has a problem with mp3 players made by Creative and it's there's always a chance that it will recognise it one day but not the next. Even if it is recognised, any music transfers may be unsuccessful. Gnomad2 is a program which seems to help with recognition and makes transfers more reliable. It...

Re: External device not recognised

If your player is made by Creative (or even if it isn't) you could try installing Gnomad2 via the software centre or Synaptic and see if it recognises it.

Re: unsupported browser

Install User Agent Switcher in Firefox. ........ I hate it when people require the use of a particular browser and/or OS to use their website. Properly built websites should work with any standards-compliant browser. I agree with your point in general , and I've used an "agent spoofer " in my main ...

Re: Linux for Clay Tablets

As another old guy, and a non-tech one, I've found that the best way to "learn" Linux is simply to use it and find out the relevant info as you come to need it. Trying to take in material from a huge, comprehensive manual (if such a thing actually exists) is going to be a struggle for anyone unless ...

Re: Be gentle with me

If you think some people are rude here, stay well away from the Ubuntu forum.
I think some posters are more exasperated than intentionally rude, usually from people who seem to resent being told how to do something differently, when what they're doing at the moment is wrong.

Re: Communication is the thing.

I don't agree that one has to learn "a lot of technical stuff" to use Linux. Anyone who can use Windows can use Linux if they're willing to make an effort. The problem is that many people don't want to or don't see why they should. In the wider world, Linux has an image problem because most people h...

Re: How to get started with learning how to use Linux?

Forget the terminal for now. Just use your Linux OS for whatever you need to do. Explore it (carefully) and find out what the various contents do.
Using Linux is the best way of "Learning Linux" .

On my system the nouveau driver didn't work at all whereas Nvidia was fine. The nouveau driver can be a real menace sometimes.

Re: need Linux equivalent to Windows "safely remove" a USB hard drive

Right click on the drive icon and select either "safely remove device" or "unmount". It's worth waiting a minute or two before actually unplugging the drive, just to be safe.

Re: VHS video to computer

Just to clarify: I wasn't suggesting s VHS/DVD combination machine which would indeed be a waste of money but connecting your VHS machine to a stand-alone DVD recorder. Yes. I tried this. I spent £50 on a second hand Samsung dvd recorder. The problem with dvd recorders in general is that they are v...

Thanks for replies. Can't afford a new vhs to dvd recorder and don't want to buy a second hand one. I have looked at various reviews and lots of the cheaper ones don't seem to be capable of capturing clear audio. i was really after a personal recommendation but not to worry, thanks for your time. How about a DVD recorder, assuming anyone still makes them? That would remove the need for a laptop and any flaky video capture software.
