Re: Be gentle with me

If you think some people are rude here, stay well away from the Ubuntu forum.
I think some posters are more exasperated than intentionally rude, usually from people who seem to resent being told how to do something differently, when what they're doing at the moment is wrong.

I'd forget about Wine. At best it's unreliable.

Re: Communication is the thing.

I don't agree that one has to learn "a lot of technical stuff" to use Linux. Anyone who can use Windows can use Linux if they're willing to make an effort. The problem is that many people don't want to or don't see why they should. In the wider world, Linux has an image problem because mos...

Re: How to get started with learning how to use Linux?

Forget the terminal for now. Just use your Linux OS for whatever you need to do. Explore it (carefully) and find out what the various contents do.
Using Linux is the best way of "Learning Linux" .

On my system the nouveau driver didn't work at all whereas Nvidia was fine. The nouveau driver can be a real menace sometimes.

Re: need Linux equivalent to Windows "safely remove" a USB hard drive

Right click on the drive icon and select either "safely remove device" or "unmount". It's worth waiting a minute or two before actually unplugging the drive, just to be safe.

Re: VHS video to computer

Just to clarify: I wasn't suggesting s VHS/DVD combination machine which would indeed be a waste of money but connecting your VHS machine to a stand-alone DVD recorder. Yes. I tried this. I spent £50 on a second hand Samsung dvd recorder. The problem with dvd recorders in general is that they are v...

Re: VHS video to computer

Thanks for replies. Can't afford a new vhs to dvd recorder and don't want to buy a second hand one. I have looked at various reviews and lots of the cheaper ones don't seem to be capable of capturing clear audio. i was really after a personal recommendation but not to worry, thanks for your time. Re: VHS video to computer

How about a DVD recorder, assuming anyone still makes them? That would remove the need for a laptop and any flaky video capture software.

I'd suggest that before you do anything else, find the resources to back up, otherwise you're tempting fate.

If you're not a criminal or living under a repressive government regime, then TOR is a massive waste of time.

Hotspot shield can be very erratic when it comes to connecting. I eventually replaced it with Hola! which seems to do the same job with much less fuss.

Right click on the Transmission icon and then click on "close". Clicking on the X at the top right of the screen hides it but leaves it still running.

Re: upgrade to newer 64bit laptop

I bought a used 64 bit Lenovo IdeaPad Flex which, after replacing the horrible Windows 8, is now running Mint 18 perfectly. It took a couple of attempts to install it successfully but apart from that it's been fine. Even the touchscreen still works.

Re: Why would I pick MINT?

By far the easiest solution, funds permitting, is to have one machine for Windows and one for Linux. You'll be amazed how rarely you have to power up the Windows machine.

Re: New user first impressions and software problem

There are several video editing programs available vis the software manager or Synaptic, all of them free and all easier to install than anything for Windows.
Learning to use them is another story but only you can say if it's worth the effort.
