Re: I want to move my USB boot drive among many PCs

Note: I will say USB boot using Sandisk flash USB3 Ultra 256Gig is much faster than booting USB WD Easy Store USB3 spinning HD. I have been booting USB linux live sessions with persistence greater than 10 years now with various methods, but none of them allowed upgrades(but I did them anyway until L...

Re: I want to move my USB boot drive among many PCs

Thanks RIH and athi Hi Rih: That is what I do now and have been doing for years using Linux Live and I could do it again, but I wish for upgradability so I can keep all my linux tricks without having to re-install them when upgrading. Hi athi: Sounds like a good idea to use the generic drivers, how ...

Re: I want to move my USB boot drive among many PCs

Thanks for the response guys. What I am looking for is one drive I can move around to several machines, and use on several machines, but not to install on any of them. That way I have my system in my pocket as a flash drive wherever I go. It might be a live session or it might be a full install on t...

I want to move my USB boot drive among many PCs

(Edited for clarification, no changes in the request. - Mike) Hi Clem and All: Subject says most of what I'm asking for. I want it all. I want a USB transportable, up-gradable Linux Mint Cinnamon on a USB drive I can use (not install) on all of my machines. One USB drive production usable carried fr...

[Solved] Re: Which OLD video card to work with LM17 on XPS 8900?

I bought an nvida Quadro NVS 295 off ebay $6 and the video started working. The next problem is both the sound and the IP don't work. The video problem is fixed, but the next layer of the onion needs fixed. - Mike

[Solved] Which OLD video card to work with LM17 on XPS 8900?

What option display card should I buy for LM17? I run LM17 Cinnamon LIVE SESSION on an old HP 8730w laptop (core 2 duo) and it works perfectly. I like it. 150gb casper-rw works perfect in this LIVE SESSION. At 8GB max it is a little memory challenged and slow because of that. However I can't upgrade...

Re: For new LM19 install, what PAST packages have I installed?

Hi administrollaattori: Thank You!! What a wealth of information there. That much information is TMI :-) , I'm overwhelmed. (TMI = Too Much Information) Looking at the results is like looking at google search results, TMI. I'm not sure what to ask for after getting what I asked for and it was too mu...

Re: For new LM19 install, what PAST packages have I installed?

Hi JerryF To answer your question, a manual process works for me. Every few years I upgrade or change linux distributions. I don't need something automatic for a task I just do every few years. I just need a reminder what I manually installed so I can have all my conveniences in the new upgrade. For...

[Solved with TMI] For new LM19 install, what PAST packages have I installed?

Problem: When I install a new system, I usually forget to install all of my favorite packages. Question: Is there a command I can run to see what I have installed through Synaptic / apt / apt-get / wine / dpkg / whatever? Details: I am planning to new-install LM19 Cinnamon. Over the years from LM12 ...

Is there a better command than sudo iotop -aoP?

Is there a better command than sudo iotop -aoP that shows an accumulation of all disk writes and the process/program doing the writes? I'm interested because I have been using this 256GB USB3.0 flash drive as my main production hard drive for two years now and I am curious and I was wondering how ba...

Re: Full usb drive install that will work on anything

YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary). The statement that USB flash-thumb drives should not be used for everyday OS use seems to not apply to me anymore. In the past excellent advice was to not use a USB flash drive as a main hard drive, and in the past I agreed, but that is different now for me because I ha...

[Solved] Re: Want a script file to copy 6 files to c:\daily-files\

Thank You very kindly Mr. WharfRat It worked. IT WORKED!!! At least one time from the command line, it worked! I had to use sudo in front of "blkid..." I had to use sudo in front of "mount..." but the windows files appeared in /media/win/ (I suspect the different linux and windows user name required...

Re: Want a script file to copy 6 files to c:\daily-files\

Thank You Mr. WharfRat! Of course you are right that there is no c: in linux, I'm very happy about that. I was only using "c:" as a metaphor to represent the main windows drive in linux even though I was approaching this in linux that has no "c:". I will try to get to this solution later tomorrow. I...

[Solved] Want a script file to copy 6 files to c:\daily-files\

Hi all: I boot and run mint 17 cinnamon off of a flash thumb drive all of the time. Sometimes I plug the flash drive into a different computer and boot to the flash drive there. 99.99% of my time is in this mint 17 cinnamon flash thumb drive. I use the c:\ drive on the computer as a backup for six f...

Re: trying to mount samsung galaxy tab a

I have found that it works better if I use the USB cable that came with my Galaxy Tab A, then it is plug and play. That seems to be important for me.

That is a thought and I will keep it in mind, but I will still look for a GParted answer because I am familiar with using GParted. Thanks, still looking. - Mike

Is there some way to force GParted to use 16.00MiB?

Hi All: Thanks Clem for Mint! Every week I do my backups to two or three Sandisk Ultra 256GB USB3 flash thumb drives. I copy complete partitions (~114GB). Yes I know write speeds will be slow, and that slow write speeds are normal for this particular type of flash drive. I make three backups, usuall...

Re: Debounce Mouse (Prevent too fast double clicks)

My logitech mouse often double clicks the left mouse button. My cheapo e-bay mouse works fine but I prefer the logitech when it is working. Sometimes I can reduce the problem by whacking the logitech mouse at 90 degrees on the side of the mouse on to the table. I not quite break the logitech mouse I...

Re: If only Bluetooth worked...

My M557 Bluetooth mouse works normally with Cinnamon 17.2 on an old Elitebook 8730w. I have to re-connect to it every time I boot using the touchpad to make the connection, but outside of a double clicking left mouse botton, it works normally. - Mike
