Re: Update manager error

Is it possible that the update manager was itself doing its automatic checking for updates, at the same time? Strictly my guess that you have probably hit the nail on the head, so this sounds like a bug of sorts to me !!! Am I supposed to know if and when this is taking place and not attempt to do ...

Re: Update manager error

Perhaps a clue: Resource temporarily unavailable Have no idea as to what this resource refers to nor why it would possibly be unavailable since my computer had just been booted from a cold start and update manager was just attempting to be used for first and only time since booting, unless it is re...

Re: "Remove foreign packages" function ?

Do you think that Brother or any other hardware manufacturer is going to pay any heed to that suggestion ? I have my serious doubts that they have any awareness of Remove foreign packages function found in Linux Mint. With their and others concentration on MS$ it is probably lucky that they give any...

Re: "Remove foreign packages" function ?

Because it's a very specific case. At most a warning along the lines "make sure you do not remove anything you might still need" would make sense IMHO. That would be better than no warning, however a novice is very unlikely to know what was/is dependent on the listed packages. If and as they go thr...

Re: "Remove foreign packages" function ?

If you set up the machine for them, isn't it on you to tell them what not to do? Yes, but in every thing I might have to do and tell them, I might forget and also, there are other circumstances in which I might not be the one setting up the machine, they might do it themselves and as a novice it mi...

"Remove foreign packages" function ?

I notice that there is a remove foreign packages function under software sources / maintenance. Is it really wise to have that function there without a more detailed explanation of the possible consequences of removing those/any foreign packages. As a for instance, if I setup a Linux Mint machine fo...

download of 2 Libre Office updates extremely slow

There were 2 Libre Office updates available for update this morning. The download of those 2 updates took almost 30 minutes and the download speed was running at less than 1 kb per second (i.e. extremely slow). These 2 updates should have downloaded in no more than 2 or 3 minutes. Was this speed pro...

Mint 19.1 Update Manager refuses to upgrade to Mint 19.2 on desktop

Am trying to upgrade my desktop computer from 19.1 to 19.2 using the upgrade path that is shown under edit options on update manager. However, when I get to the point of actually applying the upgrade the APPLY button is not active. I ran thru this same upgrade on my laptop computer and it worked jus...

It might just be a bug / regression as well.
Looking at the source on github I think I can confirm that.
I do or someone need to possibly attempt to report this as a potential bug ?

Thanks.

Re: File opening problem on Mint Mate 19.2

Hi, gm10. Confirmed. While xreader 2.0.2 (Mint 19.1) still can open and display image files, this functionality seems to have been removed from xreader 2.2.3. xreader simply refuses, even if I use File => Open from inside xreader. Maybe the reason is that there is no good reason to permit filetypes...

Re: File opening problem on Mint Mate 19.2

Hm. Will have to repeat the test on Mint 19.2, did it on 19.1: [*]selected a genuine [c].png[/c] file, right-clicked on it and selected to open with document viewer. xreader came up and opened the file. No problem. Xreader 2.2.3 refuses to open any type of image on my system, showing a banner that ...

Re: File opening problem on Mint Mate 19.2

The problematic file comes back as " PNG image data, 850 x 1100, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced " - I had to rename it to xxx.pdf to get that to work. The non-problematic files comes back as " PDF document, version 1.3 " - I renamed this one to yyy.pdf before running the command. This still does n...

Re: File opening problem on Mint Mate 19.2

If I launch xreader from terminal and then attempt to open one of the problematic files, it creates an icon with the Adobe symbol in it with the name of the problematic file but if I click on that icon nothing happens. If I do the 2nd suggested procedure what comes back on the terminal is - No such ...

Re: File opening problem on Mint Mate 19.2

Possible, although it could also just be a bad file type detection/association. When you get the error message about the PNG file, did the file try to open in Xreader or was it maybe Xviewer (the image viewer)? If you're not sure, open Xreader and try to open the problematic files via the file open...

Do you use the same pdf reader on both computers?
Yes, xreader, but, of course, the 19.2 install has a slightly newer version, am wondering if this is a bug in the new version ???

Thanks.

File opening problem on Mint Mate 19.2

One little problem that I have found so far on Mint Mate 19.2. I have several PDF files of shooting targets all of which open just fine on my 19.1 machine but when I copy them over to 19.2 on another machine only 2 or 3 of them will open. The others come up with an error regarding opening an PNG fil...
