You could try by changing some of the sound controls with alsamixer:

When you installed the printer driver did you have an hp icon in the system tray panel.
If you right click on the hp-systray and choose the (HP Device Manager) has bunch of options including to setup scan.

No worries, the version you have installed LMDE 2 Betsy is debian based mainly for advanced users.
Install the latest release of Linux Mint 18.3 might solve the issue, make a backup of important data first.

I get a popup with UTC along with other zones when hovering over the local time panel?

Just right-click the local time panel > Digital Clock Settings > Time Zones > UTC.

You could change partition labels with gparted. Right-click the partition you want to change and choose Label.

You could try Linux Mint before switching to it. First, boot from the install media (USB/DVD drive) then see if everything works?

But where is the directory where the basic installed wallpaper images are? I'll just add it to the slideshow.
You can look for it by opening the File Manager and enabling Hidden files. The images may be in ~/.local/share/wallpapers/?
