Re: Mint 13 LXDE. When?

That's bad news, I like Mint LXDE. Still, you can always install LXDE desktop on top of one of the other editions. That's what I do with Mageia. I have KDE, Xfce and LXDE installed and log into whichever one I feel like using for that session. Long live choice!

Is it possible to type up your own favourite sayings and use them for fortune cookies?

Re: [SOLVED] Graphics driver for HP Pavilion g6 series lapto

Well, that seems to have worked OK. Thank you remoulder, you've saved a new laptop from becoming a sold-as-nearly-new laptop :D And thank you Vincent for directing me to the right thread. I think I can call this one solved at last, about after about 2 months of trawling through forums. Hooray!!!!!!!

[SOLVED] Graphics driver for HP Pavilion g6 series laptop

Vincent suggested on another thread that I try this forum section for help with finding a graphics driver for my new laptop so I don't have to keep using nomodeset and acpi=off and then having to force a shutdown with the power button. Here is the output from inxi -Fc 0: System: Host carolyn-laptop ...

Re: [solved}Cannot boot, display turns off after I select Li

I've been having the same problem with my HP g6 Pavilion laptop with Intel HD graphics. I thought I'd cracked it when I was able to get it to boot using "no modeset" and "acpi=off", but then I discovered that setting "acpi=off" means I can't shutdown the system properly, it freezes part way through ...

Re: Linux Mint 13 Nightly

I think Mint could do with a bigger testing team for the LXDE edition. There's a long time lag between the main edition and the LXDE edition, and one day coming onto this forum to check on progress I followed a link from a post to the list of tests that were needed and some of them seemed to be thin...

Re: When support runs out....

Going back to an earlier reply, I think LTS releases are supported for 3 years not 5. I was interested to read the posts about LMDE, as I've also been wary about trying it because of things I've read about the greater risk of breaking your system. Now I know how to tweak it to minimise the risk, I m...

Re: Working with Mint 10... worth the ugrade to 11, now to 1

Unlike some users, I found Mint 11 worked better for me than 10 and I'm leaving that on my desktop machine for now. I like trying out new releases when they come out, but I think Mint 12 is a transitional release really, a first step along the road to the new Mint Main Edition after the upheaval cau...

Re: Finally..Just Linux Mint

There's always dual-booting. Most Linux OSes make dual-booting with Windows a doddle, then you can take as much time as you need to learn about it and still be productive. You've then got the choice of staying with the dual-boot arrangement or moving over entirely to Linux. Mint4win is another usefu...

Debian splash screen with Xfce

I installed Mint 12 Main Edition on my laptop (using mint4win) then put on Xfce and took off Gnome. Now when I boot I get a Debian splash screen. It looks quite nice, but is that meant to happen? Normally the Mint folk don't leave in anyone else's branding.

Re: Is it normal to need nomodeset after a full installation

I agree that this is a potential deal-breaker for Linux newbies. I get the impression from the various forums I've looked on that it mainly affects HD graphics cards. I never had to type "no modeset" to boot any Linux distro until I acquired my new laptop. If I'd encountered that when I first became...

Re: HP come up trumps for Linux Printing

I'm sticking with HP for printers now. I once bought an Epson and soon regretted it. Wouldn't work at all with Linux and not always correctly with Windows! Until Katya was released, though, I couldn't get my HP printer working with Mint. Looks as if there's a solution to that further up this thread ...

Removing USB pens

I don't if this is a Mint question or an XFCE question. I'm running Lisa main edition but with XFCE instead of Gnome under mint4win on my HP laptop. Every time I select the option to eject a USB pen drive, I get a message saying there is data being written to the drive and not to remove it. This hap...

Re: mint4win and separate dual boot installation?

I've tried it in Virtual Box already. I'll play safe and have either dual-boot or mint4win but not both. I might try triple-booting (I'll practice that on my desktop PC first), but perhaps with a different distro altogether as the third one. Thanks for the advice.

Re: What desktop have I got using Mint4win?

Thank you for that. Actually I decided to do something else, I put XFCE on instead and took off Gnome. I thought Gnome 3 was supposed to be state-of-the art stuff, but the only computer I've had that would display it is a 5-year-old laptop! For full installations I shall "defect" to Mint LXDE editio...

mint4win and separate dual boot installation?

I'm trying out Lisa main edition via mint4win on my new laptop. As the laptop has a 750GB hard drive, I'd like to try a proper dual-boot installation as well, probably using LXDE edition, and have carved out a new partition with that in mind. Would it do any harm to leave the mint4win installation i...

What desktop have I got using Mint4win?

I've just installed Mint 12 main edition on my new laptop (HP Pavilion g6) using Mint4win to try it out. I see the laptop's 64-bit and my live CD is 32-bit, I don't know if that makes a difference. After investigating a graphics problem and discovering I had to edit the boot options by adding "no mo...

Is Isadora still available for download?

I've been trying to install Mint on my new laptop via Mint4win (I have Katya as my only OS on my desktop PC but refuse to take risks with my laptops), but owing to some sort of graphics problem which I and several others have been posting about on various threads in the technical section of this for...
