Re: Web Browser Issue: Website opens in FireFox, but not in Opera

I tried it with Chrome-based Chromium (as I'm sure your know, Opera is based on Chrome) and I got the same error message that I got with Opera. It's obviously a Chrome issue, not strictly an Opera issue.

Re: Honor 14 Ryzen 5

I see that is an Insyde BIOS. Every one of those that I've dealt with has quirks. Something to try if you haven't already done it is Set an Administrative Password for the BIOS. After that you will reboot and allow the boot to go to the GRUB menu (I'm assuming your boot actually fails after you make...

Re: You need at least 12.7 GB disk space to install Linux Mint. This computer has only 7.7 GB.

Just saying, but my HP bios has a setting for Drives under System Configuration that allows me to disable individual SATA ports. The Dell I just worked on had a Drive setting where with a single click I could disable all of the SATA ports. Why anyone would want to do that, I don't know..... Your fir...

Re: Can we talk about Mint 20.x's auto partition behaviour?

Yup, it's a bug. The Mint 20 installer creates a FAT32 partition for the EFI bootloader, even if you are installing MBR. It's a small partition and my advice is to ignore it. Everything works. The installer does it even if the computer doesn't have an EFI boot option available at all, as I found out...

That appears to be your usb drive that you are seeing in gparted. For some reason, your system is blind to your internal disk drive (which should be sda) and is assigning the only drive it can see (your usb live drive) as sda--the live drive should be sdb if you only have a hard drive and no CD driv...

Re: Samba LAN not working

After you've enabled smb1 in your smb.conf (as per altair's post), you will need to enable smb1 in Windows 10. Windows Key + R open: Type: optional features Select (expand) SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Check SMB 1.0/CIFS Client Reboot Windows and you should be able to share your networked folders

Mint 19 should be easy as pie to install. Mint 20 is buggy as h*ll on AMD laptops (that's my experience).

Re: Will I be able to install Windows later on if I wipe the drive and install Linux right now?

Another solution. Install VirtualBox for Windows. Download a Linux ISO (I'd recommend Mint 19 for a newbie). Install Mint as a virtual machine in Windows (there are many youtube videos to show how to do it). With virtualbox and a virtual machine there is no messing about with the system you already ...

Re: Cant connect VM with host`s VPN

I wasn't aware that both host and guest could run identical vpn connections, simultaneously. I've always run one or the other (host from my network provider and guest with vpn). My thinking was that the encryption would be in constant collision between the two machines so I never tried to set it up....

Re: [TABOO] Openvpn Don't even try to connect with this

What should simplify this for you (and make your connection more secure) is install Windows as a virtual machine and using Mint as the host. Then you can configure your Windows virtual machine internet to connect via the vpn, and your Mint machine can continue to connect via your network provider. N...

Re: Does Youtube-dl not work anymore?

What I noticed is that with Mint 20, python isn't installed where youtube-dl thinks it should be. trying to run youtube-dl returns the error: /usr/bin/env: ‘python’: No such file or directory doing a #sudo apt-get install Python3 returns: python3 is already the newest version (3.8.2-0ubuntu2) To fix...

Re: kernel updates disable wi-fi

Why are you updating kernels? If you have all of your hardware working, keep the kernel you have. Only update your kernel if you have a problem that a newer kernel might fix, or if there is a security bulletin associated with the kernel you are using. Updating a kernel 'because it's there' is madnes...

Re: VirtualBox seamless mode in seperate workstation

For me, seamless mode appears to be exactly like my Mint 19 desktop. No hint of Windows 7 whatsoever, other than the taskbar showing that it's running and VB showing it running (I haven't checked it out on my Mint 20 systems). I don't see the Windows desktop until I return to my original mode with H...

Re: Advice Please: Dual boot Win10 and Linux Mint or not

I don't know about AutoCad, but my older version of Microstation PowerDraft runs fine in a W7 virtual machine. It's full-on industrial design software, so I don't see why AutoCad wouldn't work, too. I'd hesitate to try it with W10 because of system resource issues, though. https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Re: Advice Please: Dual boot Win10 and Linux Mint or not

That statement only means you don't know how to easily fix it. It takes less than a few minutes of point and click to kill all telemetry except updates, and a few more seconds of point and click to make doubly-sure that all telemetry is dead until the next major update. The gamer sites disagree. Th...

Re: My Machine is Possessed--by Windows

It's getting to be more than just a mess. The last machine I bought with W10 I reformatted and installed Mint. I think from here on out, when I need to run Windows only programs it will be from a VM. I'm doing some testing, now, to see if that is a feasible option. The jury is still out, but this is...

Re: Can't find (or install?) Grub on a Windows-dominated system (secure boot is disabled)

Depending on the BIOS, you may have to register the GRUB efi bootloader. With some BIOS (Insyde, for sure) you have to enter the BIOS after setting an Administrator bios password, and in the Security section allow the bios to search for the grubx64.efi loader. It simply doesn't work, otherwise. I HA...

It really isn't 'easy' to fix it. You can stop auto update, but the telemetry will still be there.
