Re: New install and have a WiFi catch 22.

Sorry to say this, but you CANNOT tether a linux device to an iphone with IOS 14 or newer installed. An iphone and a PC with Windows can tether, but only if iTunes is installed on the Windows machine. There is no iTunes for linux. The ONLY thing that a usb cable will share, from iPhone to linux, is ...

Re: Reinstall Linux Mint on old Mac Mini.

First, why don't you use the usb image writer that is in Cinnamon to write your Xfce boot usb? (Start Menu > All Applications > USB Image Writer) Second, you are booting an apple, all apples are uefi. Third, with uefi you should be using a gpt partition table. And, why are you bothering with trying ...

Re: Copy/Paste between Mint 21.3 and VMware Fusion 13

I'm typing this in a fully updated Mint 21.2 guest VM with VMWare Fusion 13.5.1 and a Ventura 13.6.5 host. (did you mis-type the ventura version?) Drag and Drop works both ways. Your settings appear to be the same as mine. I have Ventura System Settings > General > Sharing > File Sharing turned on w...

Re: Firefox crashes almost constantly

If for no other reason than mint 19 is no longer supported, if it were my computer I would install a newer, 64-bit mint. My own choice would be 21.2, because I still do not trust 21.3, and I've installed 21.2 on 2 old mac minis and 3 macbooks and it works fine, and all the 21's are supported for the...

Re: Firefox crashes almost constantly

DDR3 RAM is almost non-existent on the market. It's all over ebay--there were literally 4900 results from a search. And cheap--$14 for 8GB. And, your computer is not that old. I run mint 21.2 xfce and firefox on a 2009 macbook core2 duo with 4GB of ram (and an ssd), and it works well and I cannot r...

Re: No matter the linux flavor, installation won't boot.

isn't ubuntu debian based? The answer to that is 'yes and no' (with apologies to Shroedinger) Ubuntu has it's own in-house kernel development, so there are significant differences between Debian kernels and Ubuntu kernels. The installers are also quite different, as is the kernel numbering. Ubuntu ...

Have you tried LMDE6 (debian-based mint)?

I'm curious as to whether this is an ubuntu issue

Re: VirtualBox seems to be taking all available memory and filling the page file.

VB is pretty solid. W11 is a ram HOG. It really needs at least 10 GB of ram allotted to work reasonably well as a VB virtual machine. Any linux will run well with only 4GB of ram allotted to the VM, and W10 will, but W11 just won't. It's awful......and I do mean 'awful' My experience with W11 as a V...

Another note, if you are using the 'standard' Mint, curl, xzcat and cpio are installed by default. Only git needs to be installed. If you are using another distribution, you may need to install these programs.

Re: Upgraded i7 from 19.3 to 21.3. Very slow.

It is generally not recommended to do an upgrade from 19.3, because there are profound differences between the 19's and the 20's. Back up important files and do a clean install of one of the 21's, then copy your files back to the /home directory of your new install. That should avoid the gotchas ass...

Is the hardware just to new?

I think you have properly diagnosed the problem. Linux is always a few months behind windows.

Re: Greenness on screen on Mac

If you green screen with VESA mode -compatibility mode- in both ubuntu mint and lmde, then there is a high probability of a hardware problem that isn't fixable with software.

Windows isn't horrible to reinstall (if you have a couple of hours). Reinstall W11, download the Ventoy executable and install Ventoy to a usb, which will be bootable to Ventoy. Copy the Mint.iso (Edge for brand new computers) to the bootable Ventoy usb (just the .iso). In windows settings be certai...

Re: Problems with migrating from Ubuntu to Mint.

Don't panic. Do you want to keep ubuntu? If not, use the system that will boot (probably ubuntu), and download and install Ventoy to your boot usb. Then copy the Mint .iso file to the Ventoy boot disk you created. If you DO NOT have a hard-wired ethernet port on you computer, use the LMDE6 (debian) ...

Re: I can only log in via software rendering

What's so incomprehensible about that? It's completely and utterly normal in Linux. Because 5.15 is a Long Term Support kernel, and Mint 21 ships with LTS 5.15 That's inexcusable (and I've been using linux since about 1997). It is NOT 'completely and utterly normal'. Either 5.15 is LTS or it's not....

Re: Greenness on screen on Mac

I'm not sure what LMDE calls it, but try booting in 'compatibility mode'. That will boot using the built-in VESA driver and not the gpu driver. I still suspect a hardware problem--bad screen/bad connection from the mobo to the screen/bad gpu but the real tell would be if you still have macOS on that...
