Re: Replacement for broken MacBook Air 2022
I'm going to go 'outside the bounds' for this. Some mac fans cannot abide any other system. There is a way to run a 'modern' mac system on macs that are 'out of support'. These older macs can be had for a reasonable price, used, on ebay. An older macbook air, with 8GB of ram (maybe a 2012 or so), ca...

Re: I have no audio or mic input.
About everybody has done something like this at least once. In my case, more than once. That leaves a couple of options: 1. reinstall macOS (Command + Opt + R) using your network (assuming that you've deleted you macOS recovery partition) 2. Attempt to fix Mint, whatever it is that broke your sound ...

Re: I have no audio or mic input.
Are you positive that you didn't run Update Manager in Mint. I would take a wild guess that a kernel update may be at fault. That said, I still go back to my earlier post. Because your mac is still supported by Apple, I would install a Virtual Machine Manager and run Mint as a VM. I would recommend ...

If formatted FAT32, the system is limited to a file size of 4GB. If you transfer larger files, format the thumb drive EXFAT

As pointed out above, smb-browse is a cluster fk, and nobody seems to have the skills to fix it. Someday----maybe.....until then, folks like altair4 can post the workarounds. A big thanks from me.

Re: linux is my default system on my mac! (i don't want that)
Grub cannot 'see' APFS, therefore grub cannot add macOS to the boot order. You have two options. The first is the one that you are using (holding down the option key and then choosing macOS). macOS has no boot manager that can 'see' linux. The second is to install a different boot manager from Mint....

Re: I murdered Cinnamon. What is the proper way to set this dual DE up?
I'm going to caution you on this, again. IF you get this working, when it comes time to upgrade your system, you are going to blow it up. The only distribution that I've found that will run Xfce and Cinnamon seamlessly is MX linux. Mint is absolutely, positively NOT designed to do that. But, it is y...

Re: I murdered Cinnamon. What is the proper way to set this dual DE up?
Install Mint (any desktop version), then: Install VirtualBox and run any other linux distribution or desktop as a virtual machine. That includes all of the desktops, not just Xfce and Cinnamon, but KDE, Enlightenment, etc., and all versions (debian, ubuntu and arch, and even bsd if you are adventuro...

Re: Can't print Passport pdf documents, do I need a Windows machine?
Printed fine for me. Using Brave Browser, I chose to 'print to pdf' and downloaded the pdf to my downloads folder. Then I opened it with LibreOffice Draw and printed it from there with no problem whatsoever (I chose to just print the first page).

Re: Rollback from 21.3 to 21.1 Now What"
My experience is the root partition doesn't have a wonky effect on the OS until it is approaching the mid 90% full level. It depends on the partition size, because a 150GB partition has way more free space at 94% full than a 30GB partition, but the 'more than 90% full' still stands. I'm having zero ...

And the bootable gparted.iso is very handy to keep on your Ventoy boot usb. Amazing how useful Ventoy can be. Two essentials are Foxclone and gparted.

Re: What should I expect when upgrading?
I can vouch for the Backup Tool. I haven't had to use it lately, but when I upgraded 19.3 to 20.x when the 19's when out of support, I used it. The only problem I had was Thunderbird had changed the default folder naming convention when it changed versions from the 19 to the 20. That only required r...

glad you at least got sound working. With some specific macbooks it just doesn't. The mic problem was flagged by davidjo as not solved--yet, anyway. He and others are working on it. Bluetooth headsets with mic can maybe be gotten working, if bluetooth works, anyway. Does everything else work? I susp...

Apple changes the pinouts on the audio chips that it uses, so that the standard drivers in linux simply will not work with them until somebody hacks around Apple's changes and releases a bespoke driver. Worse yet, the exact same chip may have different pinouts on different apple hardware. Welcome to...

I would long ago given up on this, installed VirtualBox in W10 and then installed Mint in VB and been running it as a VM guest. The same thing that I do on macs that have insurmountable issues (such as sound and/or radeon gpus) with a hardware linux install. Hardware manufacturers can (and do) thing...

Sorry to say this, but you CANNOT tether a linux device to an iphone with IOS 14 or newer installed. An iphone and a PC with Windows can tether, but only if iTunes is installed on the Windows machine. There is no iTunes for linux. The ONLY thing that a usb cable will share, from iPhone to linux, is ...

First, why don't you use the usb image writer that is in Cinnamon to write your Xfce boot usb? (Start Menu > All Applications > USB Image Writer) Second, you are booting an apple, all apples are uefi. Third, with uefi you should be using a gpt partition table. And, why are you bothering with trying ...

I'm typing this in a fully updated Mint 21.2 guest VM with VMWare Fusion 13.5.1 and a Ventura 13.6.5 host. (did you mis-type the ventura version?) Drag and Drop works both ways.
