Re: PDF from work won't open "Unable to open document File type XML document (application/xml) is not supported"

Open Office Calc may (emphasis on may) open it. There may be encryption involved. For garbage like this, I use a Windows VM. Install VirtualBox from Oracle Download the .iso of Windows 10 Install Windows10 as a VM using Virtual Box (no need to register it, W10 will work without registering). Unregis...

Re: Thunderbird won't send emails

Automatic configuration is NOT GOING TO WORK with office365 and linux. Outgoing server port for pop3 is 995. For IMAP is 993 Changing email programs will not solve the issue -- the proper ports and authentication--OAUTH2-- must still be configured to what Microsoft requires, no matter the linux emai...

Re: Newly installed Linux on Macbook, having issues.

How far into the weeds do you want to get with this? It's not 'simple', and some issues may not be solvable, though there is a good chance that yours are. You have to be comfortable with the linux command line, and keep in mind that apple is a walled garden which doesn't actively prevent linux insta...

Re: upgrading my O.S

The answer is 'maybe'. I replaced 19 with 20 without any heartbreak, but there are a couple of 'gotchas'. Make a TimeShift of your 19, or, preferably, clone it, to a separate drive. If something goes seriously south you should be able to return your system to a functioning 19. Backup all the files i...

Re: Thunderbird won't send emails

The fix was reasonably simple, before you started messing with Thunderbird's installation. It's a change in the MS mail authentication protocol, which happened about 6 months ago. The clue was you can receive, but not send, if you don't have OAUTH2 authentication configured for SMTP. Here is the 'ho...

Re: TRIM doesn't work on VirtualBox

I suppose you've figured out by now that a VIRTUAL DRIVE isn't actually a 'real' SSD, and there is no way (or reason) that it needs to be trimmed.

The actual ssd with the host system is what needs TRIM

Re: Mint/cinnamon accessing mac as hotspot?

MacOS is AWFUL for use as a hotspot with any device but another apple connected to it. iDevices only want to connect to other iDevices and so they don't want to create a hotspot network password, which apple requires. With older macOS it was a gui option to create a adhoc network, which could be sha...

Re: Macbook air boots directly to grub menu, can't access BIOS or Boot menu anymore

After/when installing linux, choose the 'apple laptop' keyboard instead of the 'generic 105-key' that is the default. That will optimize the keyboard driver for the apple hardware.

Re: Macbook air boots directly to grub menu, can't access BIOS or Boot menu anymore

I think there might be some confusion. Macs have no direct access to the firmware. The boot HD (among other things) is stored in the NVRAM. The closest thing to 'access to bios' is using the recovery option. The key to access the boot EFI options (either the recognized EFI on the HD or the EFI on a ...

Re: Mint Installation fails - Ubuntu installation succeeds

Try installing the LMDE6 version of Mint. LMDE is the Debian kernel but with the Mint tweaks to the desktop (LMDE is Cinnamon only). There are some differences between the deb mint and the ubuntu mint, but they are minor. The debian installer might make a difference, in your case. One thing about De...

Re: rEFInd boot manager stopped working

You are probably a victim of a 'boot coup'. I avoid this when using rEFInd by locking the grub and grub2 common files in Synaptic, which stops grub from updating versions. (this isn't sudo update-grub, it is a version update via the update manager) https://rodsbooks.com/refind/bootcoup.html#linux To...

Re: First time installation on a early 2009 Mac Mini...

1. My first guess is that it is a problem with apple's firmware and how linux interacts with it. Apple firmware depends on the last version of macOS that was installed on the laptop, and it COULD be an incompatibility between apple's ACPI and what linux expects. Even when apple supplies an 'external...

Is there a good reason that you aren't just running one instance of the OS as a virtual machine?

Re: Oracle VM Virtualbox - trying to test Mint Xfce

In your guest, in order to mount a host's share, you need to 1. Have permissions to access the directory you chose on your host (I don't use a Windows host, so I'm lost there) 2. Be a member of the 'vboxsf' group. The easiest way to add yourself to this group is to open a terminal and: sudo gpasswd ...

Re: New user having issues using Vbox7 on a RAW DISK (windows 10)

Your explanation isn't making sense to me. What do you need a Windows 10 vmdk for (why didn't you just use the Windows .iso file)? You don't need anything but the window.iso, saved somewhere on your to-be host, to install a windows VM. It can be installed as a VM and you don't even have to register ...

#1 We don't even know what VM Manager you are using. #2 Nobody has mentioned this before, so your problem is probably unique, and the result of something you are doing that is unique. a. Something that can fill your host drive is VBox VM Snapshots. A snapshot is the same size as the actual VM. I dis...
