Re: Beeping / Buzzing through mic input?

I used to deal with this kind of thing all the time. The simplest approach is to try the microphone on another computer and to try this computer with another microphone. That will tell you if the problem is with the computer or with the microphone. Did that already - this mic works fine on a differ...

Re: Beeping / Buzzing through mic input?

Try this. In the terminal, type alsamixer then press F6 to select your sound card. If one of the columns says Mic Boost, arrow over to it and try reducing it with arrow down. Just checked - Mic Boost is already completely off (this is a fresh install). Besides being that loud, does it also sound li...

Beeping / Buzzing through mic input?

Hi all! I just finished putting together a PC from old parts I had laying around to put Mint on for a family member to borrow for the time being (Intel Core 2 Quad, 8GB RAM, Radeon HD4000 series video card). All works perfectly, but I've noticed from testing it that the mic input has a VERY noticeab...

Sadly, that doesn't seem to have made any difference. :(

Re: Acer Aspire 5535 - Black screen and freeze on wake from Suspend

Driver Manager only offers unicode updates for the processor.

I'd rather not install Mint 17 as it's only supported for one more year. :(

Re: Acer Aspire 5535 - Black screen and freeze on wake from Suspend

OK, the nomodeset option makes no difference. As for the second link, did you mean to run the test, or to try the sudo command to install flgrx. If the latter, I received this in Terminal when I tried: Package fglrx is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the pack...

Re: Acer Aspire 5535 - Black screen and freeze on wake from Suspend

An update - I've now tried it with the newest 4.4 kernel, the newest 4.10 kernel, the newest 4.13 kernel and the newest 4.15 kernel - same issue, upon resume I just get a black screen. I also tried each of those with the 'acpi=off and noapci' commands, to no avail either....anybody else have any sug...

Re: Acer Aspire 5535 - Black screen and freeze on wake from Suspend

The 4.4 kernel? Tried the latest 4.4 kernel in the lists, same issue. 18.3 on a lot of hardware just simply does not handle suspend, sleep, or hibernate. If you will set all of the Power settings to Never, and the lid close to "Nothing", it will work just fine. I have the low battery set at 10% to ...

Acer Aspire 5535 - Black screen and freeze on wake from Suspend

Hi all - I'm setting up an older laptop (an Acer Aspire 5535, WinVista era) to run Linux Mint 18.3 MATE 64-bit for a local non-profit small museum. Everything works perfectly and I have it set up as they need it, but where they will be moving it around the museum a lot for cataloging data, etc, the ...

Re: Touchscreen on HP Pavilion TouchSmart 14?

I know this is an exceptionally late bump to this topic I started a year ago, but I recently decided to come back to this issue and see if I could solve it. Anybody have any suggestions? :)

Thanks! :)

Re: Intel Microcode update for Spectre/Meltdown?

AHHHHH - that makes sense now! I thought the microcode was stored in NON-volatile memory on the CPU and stayed as updated until the NEXT time it was updated, if ever. Never knew it was copied to on each new boot repeatedly. I assumed I could update the code to Linux Mint as it was telling me there w...

Re: Intel Microcode update for Spectre/Meltdown?

It's not ancient, but my motherboard isn't new. It's an ASUS Sabretooth Z77. Don't think there are current BIOS updates for it, which is why I was hoping the Microcode update would be helpful!

Re: Intel Microcode update for Spectre/Meltdown?

...So, what you're saying is that if I were ever to try and install Windows on my laptop or spare desktop again now that I've installed the microcode updates through Mint with them, Windows wouldn't work anymore on them...? According to the manufacturer's website for my main desktop's moherboard, th...

Re: Intel Microcode update for Spectre/Meltdown?

The desktop and laptop first mentioned are my daily laptop and SPARE desktop - both are single OS only, i.e. Linux Mint 18.3 MATE 64-bit. Both have had their microcode updated through the Mint Driver Manager already. My main desktop runs Windows 10 only, no Linux install - it is the one I want to us...

Intel Microcode update for Spectre/Meltdown?

Hi all - this is going to be an odd question, so bear with me! I have a Linux Mint desktop and laptop which I have both updated as much as I can to deal with the Spectre/Meltdown bug. I know Mint allows updates to CPU microcode through the Driver Manager, so I have done this. Updating the microcode ...

Re: VNC Server on BOOT?

Hi - thanks for the suggestion, but I actually like having a password login, so don't want to disable it. I just want VNC to work AT the login screen so I can remote in and then type in my password myself if need be. I know it's possible as I had it done with Mint 17 at one point, but that was a few...
