Re: Running two versions of the same browser

Many thanks for the link. A bit of guidance on how to work from there would be appreciated - I am gathering that the link is to the source files for that particular Chromiun version. How do I turn that into a working installation?

Running two versions of the same browser

For reasons of an inept bureaucracy, I have to have access to Adobe Flash in an outdated format in a browser for purposes of interacting with our taxman (which I do a lot as it is a big part of my job). I have determined that Chromium 57 has what I need and have further discovered the Flashpeak Slim...

FIngerprint Reader

Brand new Lenovo E590 laptop. Out the box with Windows 10, fingerprint reader works perfectly. Have now replaced Win 10 with Mint 19.2 MATE and have installed Fingerprint GUI but no luck. Apparently my reader should be supported, but lsusb is not showing it: sudo lsusb Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:00...

Launcher: Text instead of icon

I had an installation of Linux Mint XFCE on which I added some launchers to a panel. I didn't want to use icons to depict these launchers and XFCE let me instead display the name of the launcher. I have now changed to MATE and wondering if it is possible to replicate that behaviour?

Re: Touchpad tap not working (Xfce 19)

Happy to report I found it... I needed to edit the file: /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-libinput.conf and, in my case, amend a section: Section "InputClass" # Identifier "libinput touchpad catchall" Identifier "appletouch" MatchIsTouchpad "on" MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*" Driver "libinput" Opt...

[UN-SOLVED]Re: Touchpad tap not working (Xfce 19)

Dang, so logging out and in again and the setting is indeed lost. So I tried: xinput --set-prop 10 290 1 and got this: X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied) Major opcode of failed request: 131 (XInputExtension) Minor opcode of failed request: 57 () Serial n...

[SOLVED] Re: Touchpad tap not working (Xfce 19)

Thanks. That was promising as one of the settings was "tap to click" and it was indeed off. I turned it on, but no joy. In the meantime, I found I could use xinput to find out a bit about what was going on. First xinput --list told me that my touchpad is device "10" From there: xinput --list-props 1...

[SOLVED] Touchpad tap not working (Xfce 19)

Hi I installed Mint Xfce 19 (32 bit) on my old (circa 2008) MacBook Pro. The touchpad works except for tapping on it. I have to press (click) the button that goes with the touchpad to get it to work. This is a probem, because Apple being minimalist decided to only provide one button, so right-clicki...

Lenovo W530 external monitor via VGA not working

I have a Lenovo W530 running LMDE2. When I plug an external monitor into the VGA port, the monitor detects that it is plugged into something (No Signal display on the monitor disappears and it enters power saving mode as it is not receiving anything from the laptop yet). However, Monitor Preferences...

Re: USB Image Writer killed my USB stick...

USB Image Writer seems to write to /dev/sdX instead of /dev/sdX1 causing a "recursive partition" error.

Blanking the MBR with

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX bs=512 count=1

rescues the USB drive.

I'm interested to know if anyone has successfully used the USB Image Writer Tool.

Re: Adobe Reader Plugins

@caf4926: You sure pdf is opening in Acrobat Reader (and not the built-in Chrome PDF Viewer which is based on foxit and therefore no good for my purposes). If I turn Chrome PDF Viewer plugin on then generally pdf's open fine, but some pdf's (notably those designed and used by our dastardly taxing au...

Adobe Reader Plugins

Greetings For my sins, I interact a lot with PDF files generated by the South African Revenue Services. Anyone else who uses these will be able to tell you that even the most static of their documents and forms will not open in any form of pdf reader other than Adobe v 9 + (Please correct me if I am...

Re: Can't set Adobe Reader as default application

Solved... new eyes this morning and I discovered that on my system the file I wanted was AdobeReader.desktop in /usr/share/applications.

Not sure why mine is AdobeReader.desktop whereas others mention acroread.desktop. But anyway, adding the %f sorted it out.

Re: Can't set Adobe Reader as default application

@Mik3e - Menu.. Preferences... System Settings (but you probably got that by now). Everyone - I am stumped on this one. I need to set acroread as the default for handling pdf files. As others have noted, although "Open with Adobe Reader 9" is available as an option when right-clicking a file, it is ...

Re: Hard blocked wifi - Lenovo T61P (Intel 4965)

Make sure the actual "hardware switch", on the front left is switched to the right position. This is interesting... having had an IBM Thkinkpad T42 for many years before fairly recently getting the T61P, I didn't even realise there was a hardware switch. In this case, however, it does not help. The...

Hard blocked wifi - Lenovo T61P (Intel 4965)

My problem started by warning: "wireless is disabled by hardware switch" when clicking network icon on panel. Lenovo Thinkpad T61P uses Fn-F5 to toggle Bluetooth and Wifi. Checking rfkill status it seems that the Soft Block for both Bluetooth and Wifi is toggled by this switch (together, not indepen...
