Re: Major install issues M13 Cinnamon
No luck. Actually now I've totally screwed his computer. I deleted the recovery partition and hp tools. Merged all of them together so there were only 3 partitions(System, Windows, linux) but yet it still won't install. I don't remember the exact error message, but worse than that now windows won't ...

Major install issues M13 Cinnamon
I've installed 100's of linux installs on dozens of computers, and never run into as many as with an HP Envy 17. I first tried to install like normal and install alongside windows 7. The option was not present in the installer so I booted into windows and shrunk the C drive to free 50 Gigs for an ex...

Re: software manager broken?
Well that worked. Thank you for your prompt response. But I would love to get to the root cause. I know of at least one other person with this issue, so something is wrong somewhere down the line.

software manager broken?
Not sure if this is a problem with mint or if kxstudio somehow broke this, but I did my first update for over a month yesterday, and now the software manager loads but is greyed out and must be force closed. I confirmed this with a buddy who just installed mint 2 weeks ago. He has not done any updat...

Re: New branded Linux Mint mini computer
I too want this as an HTPC. I do think it's a bit pricey, but it's so sexy! With the 4 USB's on the front it will look nice between my video game consoles!

Re: which Linux for old Laptop??
Earlier this year I refurbed my wife's 9 year old laptop for my 3 year old. I tried many distros and settled on Peppermint OS. It's superlightweight, using about 100Megs of RAM and LXDE. It's stable, and easy to use. Doesn't really come with any software, but it uses the mint software center!

Re: Mint 13 (Maya) RC out
Second I notice that the repo isn't a direct copy of the ubuntu precise repo. PCSX-R is still the old version, but precise has the newest Well, I'm not sure but my Mint 13 Cinnamon has pcsxr ver 1.9.92-3build1 available, that is exactly the same version as the latest for Ubuntu Precise ( http://pac...

Re: Mint 13 (Maya) RC out
Darn I actually think this is ready for release. As far as the base system, yes so far I haven't found any bugs in the cinnamon-64 bit yet. But as far as some compatibilities with packages in the main repo, I've already got issues. My first issues is cario-dock just plain refuses to work as a stand...

Re: Gnome 3.4 and Linux Mint 13
I'm totally on the other side of this. Cinnamon has been the first Gnome based desktop I've used that I actually like. Props to Clem and team! Default desktops are kind of a moot point these days though. It's easy enough to install anything you want from repos!

Re: Are there too many options?
Choises are great! Cinnamon/Gnome Shell perform exceptionally on all my computers. But all are less than two years old. It's not that it's bloats, it's just geared towards the new wave of hardware that has hit the market in the last few years. Personally I don't think too much time should be spent a...

Re: Gnome Shell and Unity
I'll start with the negative. Ubuntu has left such a bad taste in my mouth I'm not even curious to try any new version of Unity. Nough said. Now as for Gnome shell, I'm not crazy about the default implementation(i.e. Fedora) or even the Minted up version shipped with Mint 12. That being said, I love...

Peppermint OS Two
9 Year old HP
Intel Celeron "2.8" Ghz(what it says, but clearly the old clocking benchmark, more like 800Mhz or less)
30GB Harddrive
512 MB RAM
(Refurbed for my 2 year old and loaded with educational software)

Re: Linux Distro For My 5 Year Old
I refurbed a 9 year old laptop for my 2 year old. Tried many of the same OS's(Watt, Xubuntu) and couldn't get the performance or ease of use out of them, nor could I get any of the kid friends distros to work well on the hardware. I ended up with Peppermint OS Two. To me it's the lightestweight, yet...

Re: ideal OS
Pretty sure Mint fits my definition of the ideal OS. It's easy to install and use. It's very easy for windows converts. It makes software a breeze to install. With Wine 1.4, almost every windows app i've thrown at it, just works out of the box now. As I've said it past posts the only things I'd like...

Re: What oses yall running?
Linux Mint 12 Cairo-dock session+KXStudio Windows 7 Now with wine 1.4, all my regular applications finally work great in Linux, so the only thing Windows is there for is a very few games. Many of my games like Skyrim and Fallout-New Vegas are working beautifully with Wine! Windows, your days are num...

Re: google and linux !!!!
Why they thought they could release a cloud based OS that isn't any more than a web machine and charge a premium for it, is beyond me! I think the only way Google could seriously take the linux desktop market is to create a linux based system with some kind of source code autocomiler. I would only d...

Re: R.I.P. Compiz?
Great article. I used to really enjoy some of the things it could do. But, with a new generation of DE taking hold, we need new compositing options as well. As the article points out, Ubuntu is the only one still using it, and it doesn't even work that well with unity! Honestly, I think it may be ti...

Re: Cinnamon makes Fedora 16 usable
I hate fedora because of it doesn't always "just work" out of the box. Fedora 3 was the first distro I ever tried. I've since tried 4,5,7,8,12,13,15, and 16. I will say 16 is the first version I've used that didn't crash with some serious flaw within a few days of use. I don't like the fac...

Re: How stable is Mint 12 with Cinnamon?
I've been using cairo-dock with Mint since Mint 10, and pretty much ignored bars and panels. I loved when cairo-dock added it's own session to Gnome, it looked nice and worked really well! But I've got to say Cinnamon is starting to lure me back to a taskbar system. It just works so well, looks good...
