media drive for windows system

I used the disks app in Lubuntu to format a new 3TB drive to NTFS for a media drive, not a boot drive. My question is will I need to worry about the GUID partitioning vs MBR partitioning or is that only for a drive with windows 7 installed on it? The drive will be installed on a windows 7 system as ...

Re: having a real nightmare with amd graphics

Hi, the driver manager for additional drivers, but it was empty witch is normal as ATI dropped support for your card on Ubuntu 14.04 and Mint17. So the default driver is the best you can get, if you force another version it will break in a way or another xorg and probably part of the kernel drivers...

having a real nightmare with amd graphics

I attempted putting mint 17 xfce onto my computer last night and it had terrible overscan, so I first attempted looking into the driver manager for additional drivers, but it was empty. Next I went into the synaptic package manager and install fglrx-updates and amdccc-updates but they didn't fix the...

stripping down xfce for xbmc box

I am going to put mint 13 xfce on my computer to use for xbmc and was looking to strip it down to the bare essentials, no bluetooth, printers, office, graphics editors, etc. Any tips on doing so, without breaking everything? I wanted to try the ubuntu minimal install but the initial language selecti...

Re: what tv's work with computers?

Have you checked your output resolution? Maybe try another resolution. The old tv that worked was 720p and this new tv is also 720p so the resolution should work. I do have a bit more info. On my old tv I would often turn on my xbox while watching something and let the game load before I switched i...

Re: what tv's work with computers?

Yes the computer is all set up to run on a TV. And I tried both hdmi channels and neither seemed to receive a signal, the xbox worked on both channels however

what tv's work with computers?

I thought that if a tv had an hdmi port that meant you could plug a computer into it like a monitor and it would simply work, that was how I used my Panasonic with my HTPC. However my panasonic broke and I borrowed a Sharp television and after plugging in my computer it won't show anything. It is an...

Xfce on Apple tv?

Is it possible to boot to a live usb from an apple tv? I was wondering if it was possible without jailbreaking it. It seems like it should be to me since it is essentially just a small computer but I don't know much about Apple. If you can't do it what is apple doing to prevent it, locking the bios ...

Re: I need to use silverlight for work

So I think I'll be able to get by without silverlight, just miss out on a few announcements. But when I try to access a portion Ron by Lawson portal it says it does not support this browser: Netscape, it says this for Firefox and chromium. What does that mean?

Re: I need to use silverlight for work

Then you have a problem. MS Silverlight equivalent for Linux is Moonlight which was a dead horse for a couple of years doesn't exist anymore. I just found out that the website has been shut down. Another alternative doesn't exist. Damn that's a let down. Anybody have any suggestions about running I...

I need to use silverlight for work

My work uses IE and silverlight pretty much exclusively, I can still get some functionality using chromium but not all of it. For example if I attempt to go into myHR page it tells me it doesn't support this browser: Netscape. Is there a way other than using IE through wine that I can get either chr...

Re: multiple folders in photoframe desklet

well I think I found my answer

https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/2104

I'm pretty sure a recursive scan means it will scan subfolders as well as the main folder. This should definitely be a default behavior

multiple folders in photoframe desklet

I am really liking the new desklets, especially photoframe. One thing I have noticed is that it seems like photoframe desklet doesn't take pictures from subfolders, example I point its to my pictures directory which has arouind 25 pictures inside and then about 30 folders inside all of which have pi...

Re: How to run just a Window manager?

Thanks for clarifying for me I thought that you could install just fluxbox, openbox, e17 etc by it self and then only use that, no ubuntu or mint or anything else.

Re: How to run just a Window manager?

Thanks for the info Palo. So I think I must have misunderstood, when people talk about just running a window manager as opposed to a full DE, are they just logging into fluxbox, openbox, e17, etc at the login screen as opposed to logging into mint?

How to run just a Window manager?

Probably a simple question, but how do I run with just a Window manager? I recently tried e17 and really enjoyed it, but I've only ever installed from a live cd. How would I go about installing and just running e17?

Re: GIMP tutorial for a non-techie

If your wife absolutely insists on Photoshop, CS2 was recently released for free , and runs very well under wine. It has full graphics tablet support, and even if it is "outdated" as far as photoshop goes, it's going to have all the stuff she's likely to need, or even want, as an amateur ...

GIMP tutorial for a non-techie

I have been trying to get my wife, who is into photography, into using GIMP for awhile now. She has made a few attempts but nothing to really show for it. She has only ever really used online sites like picmonkey and such for editing but wants to get into it more. Problem is she is looking at Photos...

I was always happy with dvd shrink when I used windows, does it still work well after being out of development so long? How does it compare to k9copy?
