Is the warning against plugging in free USBs applicable only to Windows and Mac? [solved]

There's a tech reporter who recently advised against plugging in free USB drives/keys into your computer. I believe it's because there's a chance they could be infected with malware/virus/spyware/etc.

But is this precaution applicable to us Linux users?

Re: Planning on buying a USB keyboard from a private seller. How can I make sure item is 100% working?

I plan to meet a private seller in a few days to buy a USB keyboard. What do you suggest I do to test that the keyboard is 100% okay? I mean, I plan to press every key in every row. Anything I should do/know/test/ask/etc? Thanks. What's the price difference here - keyboards are not that expensive a...

can someone tell me why worldbank.org popup box shows a white box ?

1. Go to https://remittanceprices.worldbank.org/ ... alia/China
2. In the right side, there's a text box for "Alert me when new data published here"
3. Enter an email address
4. A pop up box appears, but it's blank.

I've tried both firefox and chrome. Both have the same, bad results.

Re: If I use VPN, does that mean a wifi hacker can't see the URLs of the http (non-secure) sites I visit?

if I use a VPN (Opera's built-in VPN), does that mean that the hacker (as positioned in https://www.eff.org/pages/tor-and-https) can't see the HTTP (non-secure) sites I visit? That depends 100% on the hacking that one might fall victim to, but generally, only your VPN can see what links you visit, ...

Re: How can I make Workrave program/applet harder to exit?

Rightclick on the panel icon, choose 'Preferences'. Mind you, once you use the preferences to hide that icon, I'm not sure how you'll get back in to the preferences... ah wait, you can also get there by rightclicking on the small popup window that indicates when your break is coming. Now I'm wonder...

Unticking 'Show sytem tray icon' in Preferences => User interface does exactly that.
How do I get to "Preferences"?

Re: How can I have granular control over Redshift?

Ah, that's exactly what I used to have in previous versions of Mint. Thanks.

I right-cicked on my panel, chose "Add applets to the panel", typed "redshift", and added that. Now I have the same thing as you do.

Thanks again!

How can I have granular control over Redshift? [solved]

I have redshift and redshift-gtk (both are version 1.11-1ubuntu1mint1) installed on my Mint 19.1 Cinnamon. It works without a hitch. It auto starts when i boot up, and it turns on the "bluelight filter" in the evening. However, I want more control over the settings. For instance, I want to manually ...

How can I make Workrave program/applet harder to exit?

I have the Workrave program/applet installed on my Mint 19.1 Cinnamon. I use it to nudge me away from wasting too much time on the computer/internet. It sits on my panel, and, when I'm really bad, I right-click and choose to exit the program. But that defeats my goal of having a "wake-up call" to pr...

What tablets/devices, current or old, have dimensions close to a Kobo Forma (160 x 177.7 x 8.5 mm)?

What tablets/devices, current models or discontinued, have dimensions close to a Kobo Forma (160 x 177.7 x 8.5 mm)? Android or Apple or Windows or whatever, doesn't matter to me. :)

Thanks, phd21.

I was having a hard time getting pyExifToolGUI to work. I installed the appimage for digikam and it just works! Thanks for the recommendation!

How can I get grayscale mode on my Toshiba laptop (for focus' sake)

I'd like to reduce the allure of websurfing and time-wasting by turning my computer into a grayscale machine. How can I do that?
My laptop is a Toshiba E570. There's no discrete GPU. Running Cinnamon Mint 19.1.

Installed Noto Color Emoji font. I have Qs about Character Map program

Question 1 I'd like to be able to type emojis on my Linux Mint laptop (pariticularly in Gimp) as we can in our Android phones. So I installed Noto Color Emoji (https://www.google.com/get/noto/help/emoji/) from https://github.com/googlei18n/noto-emoji/ . In Character Map, I choose "Noto Color Emoji" ...
