Re: Unable to fix GLib-GIO-CRITICAL error

So CapsLock and NumLock keys don't toggle keyboard indicator lights? And say Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't switch you to a virtual console?

Re: When to update to a new Linux kernel

You're recommended to install all security and kernel updates in a timely manner so as to keep your system safe. Continuing to use software with known security issues is, as you can imagine, a risk. Updating your kernel is generally without risk. It is the rare exception that it causes issues. In su...

Re: Issue with update manager linux mint 19

It shows none of the repository servers can be reached so I'd suspect issue with your network. Are you behind a proxy or corporate firewall. or using a VPN or Tor or something? Can you open any of the repository links in your web browser on the same machine? The sourceforge appears broke but the res...

Re: Will we get an alexa or cortana?

We already have it: https://mycroft.ai/. You can run it on your desktop or build a "smart home" device with a raspberry pi for example. They also sell a ready made device. AFAIK like other such programs it depends on a cloud service for speech recognition.

I suspect you'll have to go into the source code for that. But perhaps somebody else will have an idea.

Suggest to change to a different mirror for Linux Mint repository in Software Sources, as both auto-refresh and auto-upgrade logs show problems with it.

Re: What is the difference between Applmage, deb and other options?

I think you're misunderstanding Hoser Rob; when using AppImages, Snaps or Flatpaks one should indeed install the latest version. There is zero risk of breakage as these all ship with their own libraries and don't use system libraries. There are also no backported security fixes provided by distro ma...

Re: Is my system good enough for gaming?

My 7 year old i5-2500k is about 2 to 3 times faster than an A8-7410. Might be likely that the A8 has better graphics performance. Anyway, you'll have to try what works and not but newer titles likely will have trouble. Here are all the games for Linux on Steam tagged as "free to play": https://store...

Re: Kernel upgrades and Linux Kernel headers for development

Neither 4.13 or 4.14 are supported. You have to downgrade to 4.4 or upgrade to 4.15. Those are your two choices for staying safe.

Just upgrade to 4.15. If there are problems with it (I doubt it) you can always boot your previous kernel from the boot menu.

Re: Kernel upgrades and Linux Kernel headers for development

It's important that you're using either kernel 4.4 or kernel 4.15. Any other versions are no longer supported on Linux Mint 18.x (Ubuntu 16.04). Which kernel are you on? Personally I'd just install 4.15.

Re: Kernel upgrades and Linux Kernel headers for development

Kernel headers are user for compiling kernel modules. Like for certain graphics card drivers and virtual machine software. If you don't use that, it doesn't really matter.

Re: Mate panel contextual menu window position

mintmenu on Linux Mint 19 MATE indeed opens above (not overlapping) autohide panel. The panel context menu does overlap the autohide panel but that doesn't hinder its function, unlike the mintmenu opening underneath the autohide panel as it did on Linux mint 18.3 MATE.

Re: Opera browser installed, worked fine yesterday, now it won't launch

If that is the case, good catch! Remove your current Opera package and install Opera stable from https://www.opera.com/. You'll download a .deb file that you can then install and it will add a repository to your system for updating it through Update Manager. secret service operation failed Well, loo...

Re: Mate panel contextual menu window position

The mintmenu & autohide of panel issue is I think already reported here: https://github.com/linuxmint/mintmenu/issues/188 The context menu overlap of the autohide panel is particular to mate-panel and you'd have to do a feature request for that component with the MATE desktop developers. As the issu...
