Re: I wonder if this would work... criticism and suggestions welcome

I can't imagine what you're doing that needs RAID 0 because your 3,200 GB/s NVMe drives are too slow . Or that you'd see any significant or even noticeable difference with RAID 0 on such drives except in benchmarks. Real world applications do stuff with the data they are loading and drive speed is j...

Re: Transfering programs from old to new installation

In short: that won't work. Linux Mint 17.3 and 18.3 use a different package base (Ubuntu 14.04 vs 16.04) and thus have different versions of system libraries, or will even use entirely different libraries for specific areas. Programs are compiled to work with the system libraries that come with the ...

Re: Baldur's Gate

Assuming they bought Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, they can download it for Linux, Windows and macOS without limitation. It works on Linux Mint 17.x, 18.x and 19.x. I have it on Steam instead so can't comment on GOG's version. I'd suggest to see what the exec command in the desktop launcher is, a...

Few hours after joining the forum, my first post was helping on the "Katya screen resolution issue" with suggestions on modelines and automating them with a script  https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=76085#p444558 Took me a week before I introduced mysefl: https://forums.linuxmint.c...

Re: broken symbolic links

Obvious if you ask for verbose output: $ ln -sv test.file Desktop 'Desktop/test.file' -> 'test.file' This creates a symbolic link Desktop/test.file that points to 'test.file' in the same directory (Desktop) because you didn't include any path information. As the only file called 'test.file' in Deskt...

Re: Tellico Collection Manager question

You initially addressed this question to me. While I'd happy to help, I just offered Tellico as a suggestion for home inventory database based on a search I did to help OP on the linked topic. I have no experience with it myself. Hopefully somebody else here has used it can answer your question :) T...

How about instead of you asking us to wade through almost 2000 lines of text, you share here the (few) specific lines you're in doubt about and what your doubts are. I'm assuming you'd already have done an internet search for any such lines yourself, to find out if answers for them are out there. rk...

Re: Leopards do change their spots, and why you should care

From Wikipedia: "Embrace, extend, and extinguish", also known as "Embrace, extend, and exterminate", is a phrase that the U.S. Department of Justice found was used internally by Microsoft to describe its strategy for entering product categories involving widely used standards, extending those standa...

Re: Leopards do change their spots, and why you should care

That's big news for OIN members and licensees. We're an OIN licensee. But I've lived through too many EEE maneuvers of Microsoft. I'll believe it without reservations if they don't change their spots again in a few years. Samsung hasn't joined OIN so Microsoft will likely continue to get money from ...

Re: What's the latest Mint edition to continue use of GTK +2 for UI?

I guess Linux Mint 11? Linux Mint 12 had Gnome 3 with MGSE and Linux Mint 13 had Cinnamon (superseding MGSE) and MATE. Cinnamon has always been Gtk 3. For Gtk 2 you'd have to gamble on MATE I think. Their Gtk 2 to Gtk 3 migration path says from MATE 1.17 the migration is complete so use a Linux Mint...

Re: Add KDE desktop to Linux Mint

OP has deleted their account so we'll never see the Bash script they described. I had commented long time ago that I could do a "transform Mint 19 Xfce to KDE" tutorial but I figured a Bash script to automate it would be ten times nicer so parked it at my end. It could still put doing such a tutoria...

Re: QT-Apps (Keepassxc and VLC) are not scaling

Qt programs likely always will look a bit out of place on a Gtk desktop environment. From the Qt blog post describing how to set scale factors for X windows through QT_SCALE_FACTOR https://blog.qt.io/blog/2016/01/26/high-dpi-support-in-qt-5-6/: Q: Are non-integer scale factors supported? But the hashbang line for the scripts is #!/bin/bash, so dash should be loading bash to execute the script.

Re: Verifying checksums gives slightly different keys

Note: If gpg complains about the key ID, try the following commands instead:
Dit your tool complain about the key ID? The whole note is only for that specific case, when the regular step 1 didn't work. If importing the key worked you skip the note.
