Re: XPS 13 - Dummy Output only for sound

As noted if you need 4.11 you need to install it from mainline. You can't get it from Update Manager.

Re: 32 bit vs 64 bit [SOLVED]

We're in Chat about Linux . Let's stay on topic about Linux. Comparing 32 bit to 64 bit application performance on Windows to say anything about Linux application performance is not really useful. Especially with Firefox as it's been 64 bit on Linux since version 3.7 but only since version 43.0 on W...

Re: I messed up my APT sources trying to install Wine and PoL

Autodesk Revit may not have good alternatives on Linux. I found some BIM tools but the ones I found are discontinued. There are plenty of CAD tools for Linux but they may not find your BIM needs. Bricscad I I think good. Here are some suggested alternatives to it: https://alternativeto.net/software/...

Re: I messed up my APT sources trying to install Wine and PoL

I would suggest opening Software Sources from your menu and click "Restore the default settings" button at the bottom. If that doesn't help please share the output of this command run from the terminal:
inxi -r

Re: I messed up my APT sources trying to install Wine and PoL

The problem is you have put something incorrect in the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list and it is now malformed. This is the file that configures the software repository to use for installing PoL software. Edit the file and correct the issue. You can edit the file with this command run ...

Are they reachable from the Internet? Is the network they are on open to untrusted people or devices? If not, the devices may have the bug but it wouldn't be immediately exploitable. To find the Samba version you need a shell on the device. Then run either smbd -V or smbstatus to find the version of...

Re: VLC UPDATE

I guess you're talking about the vulnerability with subtitle files? If you're worried about this the best advice may be for now to not use subtitle files. Until you have VLC 2.2.6 or otherwise get a VLC version with this vulnerability fixed. All but a select few distros have yet to fix these issues....

Re: XPS 13 - Dummy Output only for sound

Do you know what audio chip is used on the laptop? For audio chip commonly used with Kabylake processors like yours you may need Linux kernel 4.11: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Linux-4.11-Sound-Updates You can install 4.11 from mainline: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Main...

Re: gtk.2, etc

Gtk+ 2 is a widget library that application developers can use to develop GUI applications. Gtk+ 3 is the newer version of that. Most actively maintained applications are either already using Gtk+ 3 or have plans to migrate to it. Gtk+ themes set the looks for widgets in such GUI applications. Widge...

The bug is patched on Linux Mint 17 and newer, and on LMDE 2. The fixed version of Samba is available from Update Manager as a level 3 security upgrade. Older versions of Linux Mint have reached end of life and do not receive security upgrades. Any users still using Linux Mint 13 are again recommend...

True. Except for the tools Linux Mint adds on top. Anyway, it is unclear whether OP added the backports PPA on Kubuntu and hence I pointed out that difference. Like you said, it may fix some bugs.

You're not beta testers (that's what romeo is for). But yes you get new stable releases of Linux Mint developed software in a semi-rolling fashion.

Re: I need a SELinux noob how to

There is no comparing Firejail to SELinux. Firejail is useful for levering standard kernel security features to better isolate your system from bugs (vulnerabilities) in user programs. Its profiles are human readable and simple. SELinux takes it to a whole new level by providing a separate security ...

I'm locking this as a lot has changed in the 2 years since above discussion took place. Please don't necrobump. For one, on Linux Mint you have the X-Apps that don't use CSD. Pix is a replacement for gThumb. X-Apps were introduced with Linux Mint 18; see https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_sarah_mate_what...
