Re: Remove /etc/alternatives ... possible?

/etc/alternatives is an integral part of Debian's package management system. Don't delete the directory or manually delete files I'd say. Use the update-alternatives command if you want to remove something from it. Even then, considering the vi command should be on your system for it to remain POSIX...

Re: Setting up the Default Python program

Welcome to the Linux Mint forums. What exactly are you trying to do? Mind that a lot of software on your Linux Mint system depends on the default Python versions remaining unchanged (as the software was developed and tested with that version). You wouldn't be the first person to give themselves a he...

Ah, that's with it put in the navigation bar. I'm not too sure having two different search fields will make a lot of sense.

Re: How long can I keep using Linux Mint 17.2 ?

However, I have discovered that bash scripts are not executable in Linux Mint 19 (xfce) because of the new security settings in the Thunar file manager. I have not found "good" documentation for a newbie to work their away around this. I just tested the instructions I wrote for this a few years ago...

Re: Web Site Enhancement: Reduce sensitivity of "common words" filter

Google CSE is possible with https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/extension/googlesearch and https://phpbb.hifikabin.me.uk/app.php/page/CGC. It would be a total replacement though and leave people that use the forums with Javascript disabled or blocking Google content without option to search. It also ...

Are you seeking help with this or are you just commenting? Bugs for 19.1 BETA can be reported here (if none other have reported the same there already; search first please) https://github.com/linuxmint/mint-19.1-beta/issues. Crucial bit of information missing is which edition you're using (Cinnamon,...

Re: How to "rename" a VM?

That's annoying. I tried to reproduce it with: - Clone as linked one of my VM's - Then delete the clone And indeed the original VM retains the "linked base for" name. I found the suggestion here https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=57342&sid=60abcc4a2dadd3039078ee71388eb260&start=15#p29...

This board uses phpBB forum software and is limited to use on of the four search backends that phpBB works with (native phpBB search, or one of 3 databases' builtin search). Every backend has it's pros and cons. The search backend we're using is selected for our board size and load. It's limits are ...

Re: prevent language switch in some gui applications

Do you mean you're searching for an option to disable—in certain programs only—the global keyboard shortcut for switching keyboard input method/language? I don't think that's possible. You could change the shortcut key to something else or possibly disable the input method switcher when you don't ne...

Re: Web site enhancement: Enable "auto-save" while creating a topic or reply

I think it depends on your web browser. At least in Firefox if I click on the wrong thing and load a new page I can just click the back button and Firefox will have remembered what I typed here. We're using the phpBB forum software which as far as I can see has no further options available for what ...

Re: Hello! How can I help?

Welcome to the Linux Mint forums. I'd say pick a project that aligns with your programming interests. Cinnamon applets are written in JavaScript, Cinnamon itself in C. The Mint tools (Update Manager, Software Manager, and so on) are written in Python. The Xapps (xed text editor, xviewer image viewer...

When does it ask for the keyring; at login or when starting a specific program (like Google Chrome or Chromium).

Re: xviewer jpeg comment?

From what I read online the comment in a jpg file is stored outside the exif data. Some programs pretend like it is part of the exif data. I think xviewer just shows exif data. Note also that comment is something other than the exif description field. That said, xviewer is not showing me any exif da...

Re: New to Mint

Welcome to the Linux Mint forums. Many of us made the move from Windows to Linux and had to figure out what to do with programs that were only available for Windows. When you have such programs it might be easier to dual boot for a while, so you can fall back to Windows when you don't yet have an al...

Re: where nemo save folder images prefs in cinnamon?

I tried setting an image as the icon for a directory, then tried to find what file(s) where changed. Doing some digging it seems this may be stored in the binary file ~./local/share/gvfs-metadata/home. At least: - when I delete that directory after copying its files first somewhere else - then logou...

Re: Question about closing the terminal

You can start programs so that they are immune to the terminal closing. Any of these commands as example would do that: (firefox)& firefox & disown setsid firefox These however keep the program attached to the terminal while it is running, so any warnings or errors the program sends to stdout would ...

Making changes to DNS settings in NetworkManager didn't seem to affect anything—not even the DNS shown as used by NetworkManager itself. I double checked I had disabled automatic DNS in NetworkManager. Finally, disabling and re-enabling the network in NetworkManager made it pick up the new DNS confi...
