Re: "Free" GNU/Linux

In fact Microsoft is one of the biggest contributors to the Linux Kernel Project and has been for years. Calling them "one of the biggest contributors" is demonstrably false. On almost all kernel releases they don't even register in the top 20 contributors, that's how little they contribu...

type cd ~
to go to your home directory and then try the grep commands again.
Just cd is enough, that takes you to your home directory.

Re: Forums Overhaul, Possible extensions and theme & design

The main website is undergoing a redesign. See the monthly news about that: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4116. The team is focusing solely on the main website for the moment but once it's completed they will tackle the other websites. Maybe also the forum theme. See the link if you maybe want to jo...

Re: Grep won't work.

Kenney doesn't exist. The other two do. This found nothing. Grep is installed. I don't know how to fix this. You're either not in right directory and the files containing the text "Bob Sterling" and "Reboot Alberta" are not in the directory or its subdirectories from which you'r...

Re: Unable to launch enhanced Baldur's gate (gog)

I assume the GOG installer put a launcher for the game in your menu? Try the following: - right-click your menu and select "Edit Menu" - select the category on the left where the game is, on the right select the game and then click the Properties button - copy the Command from here - then ...

Re: Recovering files from encrypted ecryptfs home directory

If it doesn't give any output, it means no files in your home directory are owned by root. That's good! Rules out this being the cause for the login loop. Bad news that more troubleshooting is needed to figure out the cause of the login loop :|

Re: Recovering files from encrypted ecryptfs home directory

Then run it with sudo:
sudo find /media -user root
That gives the command extra privileges. And -user here is a flag, write it as that and don't replace it with anything.

Re: What program do I need to open a shared library?

For some reason you need to start this pirate-qt-linux file from the terminal. This is not normal. This is some issue with this program was developed I'd guess. If you're sure you trust this software, open your file manager and go to the directory where you have the pirate-qt-linux file. Right-click...

Re: What program do I need to open a shared library?

Can we take a step back—what is it that you're actually trying to do that leads you to ask for help opening a shared library?

A shared library is a binary file with computer code that other programs can use. You can't run it as a program, you can't edit it or view it as a document.

Re: Recovering files from encrypted ecryptfs home directory

Login loop can be caused by having run GUI programs with sudo, which will lead to files of yours being owned by root instead of by you. While you have access to your encrypted home, check that with this command: find /media -user root Share which files it reports, if any. With some exceptions such f...

Re: Recovering files from encrypted ecryptfs home directory

Do I need to re-encrypt it somehow before I log off the Live USB or it will automatically encrypt it again once I log off? Your files are always encrypted on disk. Home directory encryption has a known issue though, as is in the LM release notes, that it doesn't disable access to your files when yo...

Can anyone please help ? I'm stuck at Step 4. When I enter: sudo mount -t ecryptfs /media/mint/1d8f3bdd-b89d-4ca6-8592-060660799cf0/home/.ecryptfs/userx/.Private /media/ Is that the actual command you entered? That path "/media/mint/1d8f3bdd-b89d-4ca6-8592-060660799cf0/home/.ecryptfs/userx/.Pr...

Re: How to install JRE 11 or Java 11

Just install it. You can do so through Synaptic, search for openjdk-11-jre, or from the terminal with command:
apt install openjdk-11-jre
Besides JRE 8 and 11 also available are 13 and 16.

Try also reinstalling python3-gi with this command: apt install --reinstall python3-gi Then try the command mintupdate again. Does it work now, same error, different error? If still an errorplease share the exact version of Update Manager. This command should tell you: apt version mintupdate Also, f...

Re: About /home directory

I think dualboot requires /home anyways You do not need a separate /home partition for dualboot. This is unrelated. Why would Microsoft care where you store your files on Linux? :) Unless you intend to format this /home partition as NTFS and also use it from Windows? I would advise against doing th...

Re: Home encryption

One thing to be aware of: when you change the password on an account, the encryption key is rewrapped with that password. On the other account you can still log in with the old password (as you've not changed it on the Linux Mint install) but that password won't unwrap the encryption key (because it...

Re: Home encryption

Home encryption is per user. So if you're using different user accounts on your LM20 and LM20.1 installations, even if /home is on a shared partition, if one user has opted for home encryption and the other hasn't—that's why only one user is using home encryption. Your home is your own. Edit: see r...

That looks okay and there was an update for the Xapp components, now installed.

Does mintupdate run on the terminal now do anything else?
