all41, thank you for starting this thread even though this forum may not have the same issues as some others may have. I was recently "plonked" by someone for no apparent reason. If I notice someone making a habit of it, I'll certainly report it.

If this speeddial thing was an extension, it could be disabled in Firefox 57.

Go to Tools > Addons to see which extensions are disabled.

... If you're interested in privacy (as your comment about Windows 10 suggests), I think it's best to stick it out in Firefox. It's a release candidate for those wanting it directly from Mozilla :) No, it's release 57.0, just not for Linux. Users who have Firefox 56.02 from the repos will still have to wait a few days for the update ...
