Solved. Black screen at boot. How to proceed ?
For the first time ever in using Linux Mint (about 10 years) I just had my first 'black screen with flashing cursor' experience. I don't know how to proceed from here. Some advice on first steps would be most welcome. Background: Running Mint 21.3 on a 9th generation Intel processor on an MSI MAG B5...

Digikam: how to upgrade from distro supported package?
As my first venture into Digikam I chose to install it via Synaptic - because I prefer not to use AppImage or Flatpak. Synaptic installed version (4.)7.5. I see from the digikam.org web-site that version 8.3.0 has now been released, with many significant enhancements to 7.x, which I would like to ge...

why doesn't Synaptic list an installed pakage?
if I search on 'liblensfun-dev' Synaptic shows me this: /home/tony/2024-02-29_16-29.png if I browse ALL and scroll down I find: /home/tony/2024-02-29_16-27.png I don't understand this. I also don't understand why the images don't appear, which makes this post quite useless. I guess this forum expect...

How to find where a named packgae is installed in Mint
I'm running Mint 21.3, attempting to build the latest RawTherapee software from source, following 'The Automatic Way' as described in RawTherapee's Rawpedia. The build fails with a fatal error because the configure step of the build process cannot find the header file for the lensfun library: "...

How to fix install problem with g++
This post request advice on how to correct a corruption in the way that the g++ compiler is installed on my system. It is not about finding out why this corruption is present. This corruption results in an application compile from source process which completes and installs without error but the com...

Re: Attempts to connect to a Windows PC running Warpinator fail
You don't have to turn the firewall off. You just need to allow Samba: sudo ufw allow samba Most useful. I didn't know that. Confirm Win 10 now has R/W access to that share defined in Mint. But, back to the main issue: Warpinator - actually Wimpinator so far ...in my view the current unknown is the...

Re: Attempts to connect to a Windows PC running Warpinator fail
Update to attempts to access Mint Share:
I can access the share (\\MS-7D15.local\Public) if I turn the Mint firewall off. This defeats the idea of firewall security somewhat doesn't it? So I can't run in this state. Anyway, Warpinator still cannot establish a connection.

Re: Attempts to connect to a Windows PC running Warpinator fail
It would appear that you have no shares defined on your Win10 box. In fact I don't think you have sharing enabled on your Win10 box. You can verify this on Windows by running this command in Command Prompt on Windows: net share My recommendation - at least until someone can explain why Warpinator d...

Re: Attempts to connect to a Windows PC running Warpinator fail
[Does this PC, by any chance have Norton Antivirus/Internet Suite on it? FYI Norton is known to mess with the Windows network IP stack in nefarious ways. Most of these were discovered as repairs presented to the service desk as "no internet" or similar. No, no Norton product has ever inte...

Re: Attempts to connect to a Windows PC running Warpinator fail
Attempts to connect my Mint 21.3 PC to a Windows 10 PC [sniped out stuff] I have tried a manual ‘connect to server’ from Nemo on the Mint PC, using windows share. The attempt fails with the well-discussed warning: “Failed to mount Windows share. Connection timed out”. I don’t understand if the Doma...

Re: Attempts to connect to a Windows PC running Warpinator fail
Firewalls can be a problem except when they are not. Temporarily disable the firewalls on both ends and see if it works. If it does enable one at a time and retest. That was one of the things I tried early on; with the Windows Defender firewalls for the domain network, private network and public ne...

Attempts to connect to a Windows PC running Warpinator fail
Attempts to connect my Mint 21.3 PC to a Windows 10 PC using Warpinator (Version 1.8.3 for Mint; Version 0.4.1 for Windows) fail with “No other computers found …” displayed on the Mint PC. The Windows pc displays a ‘No devices found’ message within the Warpinator window, even after a rescan. If I at...

Re: Can't use USB 3 on older mobo with kernel in LMDE6
Or you could turn off IOMMU which is suggested in the bug discussion linked above. A bit of searching the web revealed one could pass intel_iommu=off to the kernel as a boot option. That could have some security implications though. Some more info: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/592538/wh...

Re: Can't use USB 3 on older mobo with kernel in LMDE6
You may have only speculations to offer, but they are absolutely right on target - thank you. Yes, I have the GS-H81M-52H motherboard and yes, I quite agree, it does perform well with Linux. Sadly it seems to me to offer no upgrade path when coupled with an Intel i7-4690 - which has a gratifyingly l...

Can't use USB 3 on older mobo with kernel in LMDE6
I repurposed an older PC (Intel 4th gen processor; Gigabyte H81M mobo; nVidia 1050 GPU) from running Mint 21.2 (no issues) to running LMDE6 (issues with trying to get the LMDE USB key to boot, as discussed elsewhere in this forum. now solved). Now I find a rather more serious issue: when running LMD...

Solved: Re: How to file a bug against LMDE6 'live boot' ISO
I have marked this topic as 'Solved' on the basis that I do not now think a bug report can be raised against the LMDE6 ISO boot process. For details see my other post on the topic 'LMDE6 USB will not boot on a particular PC'

Solved. Re: LMDE6 USB key will not boot on a particular PC
The result from further testing produced the worst possible result - in terms of being able to authoritatively claim there is a bug in the LMDE6 boot process: the USB stick I made boots successfully on all other PCs I tried when the allegedly suspect Logitech USB Bluetooth dongle was installed. Conc...

Re: LMDE6 USB key will not boot on a particular PC
I'd suggest to also try booting the LMDE 6 ISO an another computer but now with your Logitech M185 and its USB bluetooth dongle connected instead of its regular mouse. Can you reproduce the LMDE 6 ISO boot problem on the other computer with that? If so that likely confirms the problem is with that ...
