Re: No updates?

Same here. I can't upgrade either. But upgrades have always been a problem on LMDE. I've gotten used to XFCE, and want to stay with a distro that uses it. I've been testing out Xubuntu 12.04 b2 for the past week and it works great. My problematic Broadcom wifi works OOB, and updates don't give me a ...

Re: How to Boot/Install from Memory Stick

Dear All, I am soon getting a netbook and I'd like to dual boot it with Mint Debian. Seen that the netbook has no CD player, how do I make a bootable memory stick for the installation? Should I use unetbootin+iso file? Many thanks larry77 Here is most of a reply I just posted in another thread whic...

Re: Broadcam BCM43225 in Linux Mint Debian Edition

My laptop (acer aspire 1830T) has a bcm43225 wireless adapter in it, and I can't figure out how to set it up. How do I set it up? Thanks Edit: Figured it out! Follow the directions for wheezy on this page. http://wiki.debian.org/brcm80211 Edit 2: It only works when I run modprobe -r brcmsmac ; modp...

Re: Create bootable LMDE USB stick

I spent the day yesterday playing with LMDE. My intent was to create a live usb *persistent* install so I could save my changes. I started with a LMDE live usb stick I made about a month ago. I created it by this method: 1. Downloaded ISO. 2. Formatted the thumb drive as FAT32. 3. Used Unetbootin, s...

Re: Caps Lock Indicator

You're welcome. BTW, I've shown your message to my wife, who'd somehow gotten the idea I'd become useless. :?) Well, you've certainly been very useful to me. That tip was worth it's weight in gold. :D Your wife doesn't think you're useless, she's probably just mad at you for some little thing. Wive...

Re: Caps Lock Indicator

Odd, this doesn't work for me at all (and I understand editing .bashrc and restarting X). Is this no longer valid in Mint 11? [later] Aha. It turns out this option is built into Mint's Preferences. If you open: Main menu > Preferences > Keyboard > "Layouts" tab ...you'll find a whole list of altern...

Re: Evil-K.... now Minty fresh!!

Like you, I really dislike Windows. My husband still uses XP, but the Windows version I liked best was 2000 Pro. I had no issue with XP until recently, but then pretty much every computer without exception is running horrendously slow on it. I had always wanted to try Linux, but until Ubuntu it was...

Re: Another Ubuntu refugee... sort of...

The new brcm80211 driver for Broadcom (I think you're using that ?) does not yet support wifi lights. Maybe in a future Mint version it will work better. Note that the driver is still in 'staging' which means it isn't yet declared stable by the kernel developers. Probably you can fix it by installi...

A little bit fed up about the continuous "Hey Guys", even wonder if women are using your distro. For the rest, good distro, good podcast, but, again, try: "Hey People"...or find something. And don't tell me "You Guys" is generic!. I never minded it... and I'm a girl. :) Different strokes...

Re: Another Ubuntu refugee... sort of...

That other Acers are having another on/off button for wireless that works. That's it. You cannot say Acer = Acer just because it looks the same. The inside may be entirely different, and even if the model number is equal there may be differences. Atheros or Broadcom should not matter when using ace...

Re: Evil-K.... now Minty fresh!!

I hear ya with the wireless. It was a chore to get any sort of wireless compatibility with Ubuntu. Pretty much the day I said good-bye to Windows in my personal life was when it wouldn't even register the direct ethernet hookup. Since the only thing keeping me from Linux in general was being unable...

Re: Another Ubuntu refugee... sort of...

If it was solved by blacklisting the acer-wmi, then your Broadcom is not to blame. It's the wireless on/off button that did not work. It often happens on Acers that the wireless on/off button does not work with Linux, and you have to force the system to ignore that button (unload its module). I res...

Re: Another Ubuntu refugee... sort of...

Broadcom wireless on Linux is steadily improving; there are some chips that already work right out-of-the-box on Mint 11. But there's still much room for improvement; I still prefer Intel. Yes, yes, and yes. :) Broadcom chips are the pits. I will take Intel, or even Atheros, any day of the week ove...

Greetings all! Anyhoo, I've been mostly Windows-free for a couple of months now (I still have to use Windows at work). I first used Ubuntu 9.10 (unfortunately obsolete, but it was all I could find that would work on my obsolete laptop... an IBM Thinkpad X something ), but had tried a number of dist...

Re: INTRODUCING MY SELF

Welcome. I'm a Mint n00b too, but I've been using Ubuntu for a couple of years so I'm not new to Linux. I dual booting Win7/Mint 11 on a new Acer ultraportable I just got. Not that i use Win7- I can't stand it. But I'll leave it there until the warranty is up, just in case. I am liking Mint so far. ...
