Re: initramfs unpacking fialed: decoding failed

What worked for me was to leave compress=lz4 as it is and rebuild initramfs using sudo update-initramfs -c -k $(uname -r) copy and paste as it is written in a terminal window, wait for it to complete and then reboot. Re: HPlip 3.20.9 Linux Mint 20

The version of HPLIP in the repositories of Linux Mint 20 is 3.20.3 and that has been tested and should be used. Versions later than that accommodate the requirements of printers released later than the HP Envy 4520. This website (https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_dev...

Re: How to make Claws-Mail the default Email Client in Cinnamon?

Claws-mail version 3.17.5 can be installed via the Software Manager and Thunderbird can be uninstalled via the Software Manager thereby removing the issue of the preferred application status. However, you can edit a file in your home directory - ~/.local/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache to include ...

Re: No splash screen

Using your favoured text editor with sudo change the following 2 lines in /etc/default/grub:

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT=0

to read:

# GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT=3

Then sudo update-grub before reboot.

The default timeout value for GRUB is 10 seconds - adjust to suit.

Re: Unable to enter BIOS

That depends on what kind of computer you have. You can look it up on the following list:

On starting your computer, press the appropriate key when you see the manufacturer's logo.

Re: Hardware Recommendations-Mint Compatable Mono Laser Printer and Color Scanner

I would recommend an HP inkjet multifunction unit. Almost all of them are plug and play.
All manufacturers have Linux drivers available but HP drivers are already installed on your system.

I could download https://www.torproject.org/dist/torbrow ... -US.tar.xz but that wouldn't auto update, right?
That is the best and only way to install the Tor browser ... and it will automatically update.

Re: Mint 20 boot from DVD

The Linux Mint Live CD that you have is a live medium for you to explore the operating system. There is no Log on. When you leave the live session all traces of use disappear. Nothing can or has been saved. To get a log in screen you have to install the system and at that time you can enter your par...

Re: GRUB timeout in LM20

Any adjustment to /etc/default/grub must be made as root and followed up by sudo update-grub

Until the transition from 19.3 to 20.0 is completed I suggest that you set the timeout to 2. It can be reduced later.

Re: Need new cheap all in one printer/scanner

Don't worry about what it says on the box.

Any of the brands you mentioned will work with Linux but only HP is plug and play since the drivers for that are included in Linux Mint. The other brands provide drivers for Linux but you have to download and install them.

Go for HP.

No, JackMan96, there was no wasted time. It was a pleasure to work things out together. It would have been a bonus to know what your objective was at the start and I second the recommendation by pbear to use an external USB drive with Linux Mint installed as fitting for your purpose.
