Spontaneous launching of Caja
Using Linux Mint 21.1 with the Mate desktop environment. Caja spontaneously launches to display the file contents of a thumb drive. Can't run other programs more than a few seconds before this occurs. It's an irritant. I realize I could cure this by ejecting the thumb drive but it's frequently used ...

how to do a logout from Cinnamon on Mint 19.3
I'm trying to escape from the aftermath of a user who self-installed Mint 19.3 with the Cinnamon desktop. I only support the Mate desktop. But I can find no way to do a logout from Cinnamon to switch to the Mate desktop, including several methods I found online. (My impression is that Cinnamon is co...

Re: Possible problem with permissions on samba share
I removed the old samba share and got the permissions and file ownership issues straightened out. That cured a couple of problems described above in the NoteCase pro development builds. Now we're down to the program bugs. I'm going to hold off on setting up the new network share until we've got all ...

Re: Possible problem with permissions on samba share
Sorry I didn't get back sooner; I've been out of town for a few days. Here is the output for testparm. I got no output from the other so I am guessing that the "usershare" parameter on the net command line is something I'm supposed to substitute. But I don't know what to substitute or how ...

Possible problem with permissions on samba share
Hi, all, A possible problem with a samba network share that was working properly but now is experiencing issues. I am runing Mint 17 with the Mate desktop with Windows 7 on another machine. A directory structure on Mint is shared with Windows via a samba network share. I do most of my work in a mult...

Re: How to switch back and forth from Mint and Cinnaomon?
Thank you very much. Worked like a charm. For others who stumble upon this thread, after selecting a window manager by the method given above, Mint dutifully throws a choice message box immediately after the login is launched, asking whether you want to make that window manager the default.

SOLVED How to switch back and forth from Mint and Cinnaomon?
My search skills have deserted me today. When I booted up the system today, I was presented with the Cinnamon window manager rather than Mate. I have never knowingly installed Cinnamon files. My only clue on why this might have happened is that about 10 days ago I upgraded in place from Mint 16 Mate...

Re: What made you switch to Linux Mint?
Just realized there was a "why I left Windows" component to the question. Major reasons here (there are many more). First, I still run Windows on one machine because I contribute to the development of a multi-platform software project that does most of its development builds for the Win32 ...

Re: What made you switch to Linux Mint?
I came to Linux many years ago and after trying many distros, settled on Kubuntu because: (I) fairly easy transition from Windows to KDE; (ii) lots of packages; (iii) large developer pool; and (iv) few customizations needed after reinstalling or upgrading. But KDE 4 blew my mind; I just wanted to ge...

Re: Messed up fstab blocking boot
I had already tried commenting the /tmp line in fstab before posting originally. That got me no closer to loading Mint. I suspect that my problems ran deeper than fstab. But I've got a working reinstalled system now. Working on configuration.

Re: Messed up fstab blocking boot
Unfortunately, that didn't cure the problem. I have to get that machine back into production ASAP so am reinstalling Mint. Thanks for the assist.

Messed up fstab blocking boot
Hi, all, Using Mint 16 Mate 64-bit. I changed a setting from the GUI a few days ago and have since been unable to boot the system. I was, however, able to boot a Mint 16 install CD and to mount the root drive, which is sdb1. I suspect the problem is in the last line of my fstab file, which to my une...

Mint 16 -- audio hardware settings not saved
Hi, all, Fresh installation of Mint 16 Mate 64-bit with all updates applied. In Sound Preferences, I select the output device (USB analog stereo headphones with microphone), switch to the hardware tab and select the same device, test speakers, everything works as desired. I close the Sound Preferenc...

Re: Laptop's monitor STUCK on full-brightness, very hard to
Here is a different approach that works on recent desktop LED/LCD monitors. I use it. No idea if it will work on a laptop.j sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install xcalib sudo xcalib -co 80 -a ... where 80 is the percentage of monitor contrast. To restore to full contrast use: sudo xcalib -c The tw...

Re: Mint 15 freezes when internet connection is lost
There's something more going on than I thought. Comcast maintenance was here today and cut the internet connection while they repaired a problem. That didn't freeze Mint. So I've got an issue that doesn't replicate in all internet disconnects. I'll watch and see if I can find further clues the next ...

Mint 15 freezes when internet connection is lost
Hi, all, ' A problem that has recurred several times in the year or so since I installed Mint 15 64-bit: when I lose my internet connection, the system freezes and even after the internet connection is restored, I have to reboot the system to recover. Unpleasant because I sometimes lose unsaved data...

So yes, perhaps not advertise your degree in law without your reading glasses on :-) Darn, I did it again. :-) Happening more and more often as I age. It's a good thing that I retired from practicing law ten years ago. Thanks for pointing out my error. BTW, the "J.D." isn't intended to br...

Bugs on Mint web page
Hi, all, I'm flying low so don't have time to investigate how to properly report this issue. Would someone who knows how to report Mint web site bugs please report this for me, please? The page at http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_nadia_whatsnew.php repeatedly refers to Mint 14 as Mint "1.4" an...

Mint 14 Mate -- panel disappeared and other settings changed
Second attempt at posting, prior post did not appear in the forum. Hi, All, I couldn't resist moving from Mint 13 to Mint 14 so did a clean install of Mint 14 Mate 64-bit a couple of nights ago. Things went well for the first 24 hours, but since then Mint displays no panel, power management has reve...
