Thank you very much. Worked like a charm. For others who stumble upon this thread, after selecting a window manager by the method given above, Mint dutifully throws a choice message box immediately after the login is launched, asking whether you want to make that window manager the default.

I had already tried commenting the /tmp line in fstab before posting originally. That got me no closer to loading Mint. I suspect that my problems ran deeper than fstab. But I've got a working reinstalled system now. Working on configuration.

Unfortunately, that didn't cure the problem. I have to get that machine back into production ASAP so am reinstalling Mint. Thanks for the assist.
