I had the same problem. I put it down to broken updates.

When I ran

sudo dpkg --configure -a
It resolved itself.

While I can't speak for anybody else, I am moving over from Ubuntu (slowly, 10.04 LTS is still my main OS) to avoid Unity and keep my current productivity (which relies on a desktop environment, not a smartphone simulation). I had to express my appreciation for LMDE somewhere. It's great. It flies. It does have some known bugs, but as long as they don't slavishly follow Ubuntu's evolutionary brick wall, then I'm happy.
