Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”

Keeping a 32bit CPU PC is surely only gratifying for sentimental reasons. Given that one can get a 64bit 1.2GHz quad-core CPU for £32 at "thepihut.com" and one could boot it from a USB mass storage device.(see link) What's all the fuss about old 32bit machines? With a Pi3 think of all the electrical...

Re: Skype 8.13.0.2

SueS, If you are happy to send texts, chats, voice calls, and AV items one could use Signal on your Mobile Linux device (Android) - well Linux kernel. See: https://lifehacker.com/secure-messaging-app-showdown-whatsapp-vs-signal-1794684943 I have to admit that the thought of running Microsoft library...

Re: Help no sound with Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya

Hi, Aliov, I have had the same problem on a friends Mint18.2. This occurred after a kernel update of the 4.4 series. Switching back to the one before the latest 4.4 kernel cured the problem. This is something you might find worth trying, clearly there is a some sort of bug in the latest 4.4 kernel a...

Re: Installing Canon Pixma printers

Hi rdcuff, Glad to have been some help. Hope you still have some hair left! If any Lubuntu users are scanning the Mint forums for help, as has been found in the past, note the following;- Cups printing support is not loaded in Lubuntu. Load CUPS with Synaptic Package Manager, not with "apt" Look for...

Re: Update Manager improvements not carried through to Mate.

smurphos wrote I think the current level 4 description in version 5.2.9 of update manager which is a little less off-putting is... Apply one by one. Impact on sensitive parts of the system. Now that's what I call a notification. It comprises of two parts - 1) an instruction on how to be careful and...

Re: Update Manager improvements not carried through to Mate.

Hah, that's not a notification that's a threat! Level 4: "Unsafe updates. Could potentially affect the stability of the system. By "some notification" I meant a clear worded statement in the users language. Which was where we came in at the beginning of this thread. Some words selected from the Linu...

Re: Update Manager improvements not carried through to Mate.

Because they're being offered the latest kernel from the next supported series when this happens . I take the point. However, being "offered" is not the same as being told why one should accept the offer. Could be very important where security is concerned. This thread started about "Improvements i...

Re: Update Manager improvements not carried through to Mate.

That's why it isn't desirable to release Mint 18.2 and 18.3 with the LTS 4.4 kernel series. That's fine but, does it not lead to a situation where support for the kernel used might abruptly end without the Mint user being aware. For example, take the case shown in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTS...

As the Update Manager updates Kernels and Mint Applications, does this work;- Linux Mint 18.2 is based on Ubuntu 16.04 and was released with the 4.4 kernel, supported until April 2021 see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/RollingLTSEnablementStack Mint 18.2 is a long term support release which will be ...

Re: Update Manager improvements not carried through to Mate.

Hi Pjotr Ah but, if one was new to Mint 18.2 which latest kernel of the 4 groups available in update manager 4.4, 4.8, 4.10 or 4.11 is the most secure ? Furthermore, some aspects of the Update Manager have become less user friendly. For example, in Mint Rosa (17.3) Mate one can find all installed ke...

Canon Scangear MP Ver. 1.8 (Debian archive)

A detailed guide which will help (modified for your driver versions) can be found at;-

Update With the Canon TS series drivers in Mint 17.3 the Mate text editor, Pluma, will no longer print - while Office, Gimp, Leafpad and Document Viewer all print O.K. It did print when the Canon driver was first installed but Mint has had many updates since. When it stopped I cannot tell, as it is...
