Re: [SOLVED] Beginner GTK questions

Well, I finally figured it out. My confusion ended up being with the g_signal_connect/G_CALLBACK when used in conjunction with "clicked"/button. I didn't realize that the receiving function needed to accept GtkWidget in addition to the GtkEntry. That's where my hold-up was...and why none of my type ...

Re: [SOLVED] Beginner GTK questions

Yeah, I've spent a lot of time on that specific page over the course of the past day and a half. Unfortunately, no matter how I define or cast or reference the widget, I receive type mis-match warnings during compilation, or segment faults during runtime.

I'll keep trying.

Re: [SOLVED] Beginner GTK questions

Well, I ran into another minor roadblock... I haven't been able to pull the text from gtk_entry widgets. I did gtk_text_view widgets first, and was sucessful in obtaining/modifying the buffers, but the gtk_entry widgets don't seem as straight forward to me, and I'm having a tough time finding "apple...

Re: [SOLVED] Wayland / Gtk / X / etc.

gm10! You are the best!

I finally was able to see where my hold-up was - and it was definitely due to containers.

Thanks for your detailed explanation, and you were 100% correct...it's super easy.

I'm so sorry it took me this long to figure it out, but thanks for hanging in there with me!

Re: [SOLVED] Wayland / Gtk / X / etc.

Man...you're nailing it! I changed a couple things pertaining to containers...and results! (I haven't used GLADE because I have a hard time understanding how to interpret what I'm seeing into C code.) So, here's what I had originally: gtk_container_add(GTK_CONTAINER(window), GTK_WIDGET(box)); This r...

Re: [SOLVED] Wayland / Gtk / X / etc.

Thanks for the breakdown. You're right about me being confused by the stack/stack switcher explanations. (I'm used to "stack" as only referring to memory.) Your suggested example of the "preferences" in Update Manager was perfect! It's exactly what I'm looking to do (see attachment). My "sticky wick...

Re: [SOLVED] Wayland / Gtk / X / etc.

gm10, Well, as you said, the GTK API is fairly well explained (in syntax). Thanks to your direction, I was able to roughly (visually) replicate the PHP page within my first day using GTK. However, in reading the "recommendations" at the link you provided, I started thinking that I should change the ...

Re: [SOLVED] Wayland / Gtk / X / etc.

gm10...I can't thank you enough! Between the time of my earlier post, and now - I had spent more time at the link you provided, and felt foolish for posting the previous question! It didn't take a lot of time at the link to figure out where my confusion has been. ;^)>>> I'm certain that I'll be able...

Re: [SOLVED] Wayland / Gtk / X / etc.

Thanks for the additional info, gm10! That does bring up a good question, though...my preferred/ideal programming environment would be to code things without using a "visual" editor. In this case, I do need the resulting app/program to be GUI though. Can this be achieved on Linux without a visual ed...

Re: Wayland / Gtk / X / etc.

Thanks, gm10! I got pushed off-course by something I read elsewhere and misunderstood the point of Wayland as a result. Thank you very much for the clear answer. I guess I'll start dusting off the old C and try to get up to speed using Glade/Ultimate++ or whatever other tools seem best. Thanks again...

[SOLVED] Beginner GTK questions

I haven't programmed seriously since Windows 3.1/Windows 95 (prior to visual editors). I'm thinking about jumping back into it, but now use Linux (which of course doesn't have an API in the same way Windows did). I've tried to research the best way to approach creating GUI apps for Linux, and realiz...

Re: Grub Rescue when installing LMDE 3

Katie, I'm guessing that you installed MBR instead of UEFI...so I'm basing these steps on that assumption: grub rescue>set boot=(hd0,msdos1) grub rescue>set prefix=(hd0,msdos1)/boot/grub grub rescue>insmod normal grub rescue>normal If this gets you into the GUI, then make sure grub is installed, and...

Re: Grub Rescue when installing LMDE 3

What do you see when you type:

Code: Select all

ls (hd0,msdos1)
At the grub rescue command prompt?

Re: Grub Rescue when installing LMDE 3

Are you receiving this error when you attempt to boot from the sdd/hard drive, or from the live image?

If you cancelled the installation, there's a good chance that you'll need to boot from the live image again, and perform a clean install.

Re: Why did Mate look so good on LMDE2 and what should I upgrade to?

I know that this won't answer your question, but I do think it is pertinent. I was very weary of moving to LMDE3, because I was a huge fan of MATE (and my previous experience with Cinnamon had been terrible). However, I went ahead and installed LMDE3 "as is" - and have loved it. The only two items w...

Re: Terminal's TAB for autocomplete question

Thanks rene! That's exactly what happened. Somewhere along the way someone added the lilypond association to (only) .ly files! Argh! Thanks for pointing out the fix. I opened the /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion file and removed the following line: _install_xspec '!*.ly' lilypond ly2dvi .....

[SOLVED] Terminal's TAB for autocomplete question

In LMDE and LMDE2 (along with the various LM v11, v12, and v13)...I was able to use the TAB key to autocomplete filenames/foldernames while in terminal. I can still do that in LMDE3, but only partially: I used to be able to use this same autocomplete option while typing arguments to other commands. ...

Are you using xed as the text editor?

If so, did you check the setting in TOOLS | SET LANGUAGE?
