Re: Multi OS filesharing in 2018 - question.

Thanks altair!

I guess I'll stick with SAMBA for now then. I've been a little reluctant to have the mDNS traffic run amok on my networks...perhaps this is an invalid concern?

At any rate - thanks for answering my question and providing such great information!

[SOLVED] Multi OS filesharing in 2018 - question.

So, here we are in 2018. iOS, Linux, Windows, et al.

And here I am in 2018...still using SAMBA like I did way back when. Is this the best solution? Are there other solutions which are better now?

Thanks,
Fuzzy

Re: Small LMDE2 install?

Hi MintBean, Thanks for the response. In fact, having just read an article on Arch is what brought this post into being. As hard as it is to believe...back in the day, I was a Slackware user. It was "fun", and taught me some basics, but it was too fussy for me at times (and I did want a GUI Windows ...

[SOLVED] (answered) Small LMDE2 install?

Perhaps this question has been asked before, but I wasn't sure which search criteria to use in order to find the post(s). If it's out there, please let me know and I'd be happy to go read through the threads. I'm curious whether there's a small or lightweight install option for LMDE2? Meaning: I don...

Re: Permissions / Firefox

Thanks Fred! (and Xenopeek!) Those Firejail tutorials were exactly what I was looking for! I'll dig through the profiles and see what all else it does. Pretty cool stuff!

Also - thanks for the stat command and the offer for help if I run into problems.

Re: Permissions / Firefox

Okay, so the problem with Firejail/Firefox was evidently just an oversite on my part. I checked my shortcut, and it wasn't configured correctly. Now it works fine. Is there a good "how to" or "recommended" setup for Firejail somewhere? Right now, I'm using it ONLY for firefox, and only from the shor...

Re: Permissions / Firefox

Hi Fred, Thanks for the response! I'm not sure which permissions I really should have set for my home folder...I think I put 700 on it (how do I check? I can check with ls -ll, but I'm never good at converting the rwx stuff to the 777 stuff). What would you recommend it should be? I feel so foolish ...

[SOLVED] Permissions / Firefox

I recently installed LMDE2 on a brand new drive, and brought my home folder across. (First time I've actually tried to bring stuff over from an old install.) So, after copying the home folder, installing necessary software, and copying over a few extra conf files - everything is working great! Excep...

Re: Update Manager won't ignore specific update

I ended up just uninstalling the "mint-search-addon" - so far - no problems, and everything seems resolved. Marking as "SOLVED". Thanks!

Re: Update Manager won't ignore specific update

Thanks Penn - I tried the apt-mark command - and like using "ignore" in Synaptic, it appeared to work for a few hours, and now it is back again. Not sure what else to try unless I do a full uninstall of mint-search-addon. I'll wait just a little longer in case other thoughts come along. Thanks again...

[SOLVED] Update Manager won't ignore specific update

There is a "mint-search-addon" showing up in my Update Manager, which "enhances the results given by google" and "Currently supports Firefox, Flock, and Songbird." - it is a level 1 update. I don't use Google search. I have asked Update Manager to "Ignore updates for this package". The update will d...

Re: Few glitches since updates?

Thanks, Pjotr! Unfortunately, as per the "Don't mix desktop environments" stuff - yeah, I read that link right after having installed Cinnamon...so then I was sorta stuck. Sounds like I would have been better off just leaving Cinnamon (unused) instead of uninstalling it, but I didn't want to keep ju...

[SOLVED] Few glitches since updates?

I've had a couple odd issues pop up since the last updates (or was it since I uninstalled Cinnamon?) Nothing big, but wondering if others had experienced anything similar. 1. My default Terminal settings (color/transparency) were reset to default 2. Sometimes, when I click my Mate menu - and if I ha...

Re: LAMP, subdirectories

Argh! Okay, the problem ended up being 100% user ignorance. I evidently hadn't disabled anything. I simply forgot that the default configuration of the installation for Apache2 is the html folder, so that I didn't need to include "/html/<filename>" in the path, or /html/foldername/ etc. Yeah, just l...

[SOLVED] LAMP, subdirectories

I occasionally (and very poorly) create some php sites to use for my own purposes. After making one of my computers a LAMP, I remember being worried about security at completion of one of my projects, and locked a few things down. Unfortunately, I didn't write down the changes I made, and now I can'...

Re: Cinnamon vs Mate?

Thanks for all the responses. I have used Cinnamon from live media (and even...I know, I know...installed Cinnamon in addition to Mate so that I could choose during startup - I didn't know this was a no-no at the time). However, I've never found any advantage of one over the other - other than mate ...

[SOLVED] Cinnamon vs Mate?

I notice most of the power users on the board seem to prefer Cinnamon to Mate. Does Cinnamon offer any benefits over Mate, or is it just user preference? Are any tasks easier/shorter, require less clicking, etc? (I've always used Mate, and am wondering if I'd benefit in any way by switching to Cinna...

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox & linuxmint.com caching?

Hi TryTip, Yeah, I do know how to do the DNS change. However, I'm always reluctant to include yet another entity into my Internet traffic. I do suspect that the ISP is the only answer as to "why" things were being served from a cache. However - I'm still confused as to why this effected only LMDE2 w...

Re: Firefox & linuxmint.com caching?

Sheesh! You folks aren't going to believe this...I inadvertently stumbled across a solution, and the resolution had nothing to do with either FF or LMDE2. Believe it or not - on a total unrelated endeavor - I decided to switch out my old Internet modem for a newer one (capable of faster speeds). So ...
