Re: my text editor shows me unstable caracter for arabic

Are you using xed as the text editor?

If so, did you check the setting in TOOLS | SET LANGUAGE?

Re: Manual read-only mount fails, automount read/write succeeds...what am I doing wrong?

I stumbled across the solution...and in retrospect it seems pretty obvious.

Here's what worked: I simply forced the filesystem type.

Code: Select all

sudo mount -t ntfs -o ro,loop,offset=32256 /media/UserName/MediaName/BackupImage.dd /mnt/Recovery
Thanks,

[SOLVED] Manual read-only mount fails, automount read/write succeeds...what am I doing wrong?

I believe that I have a failure of an ancient RAID card (instead of the drives). It was an old hardware RAID 1, and I simply wanted to create a dd image of one of the drives "just in case." I attempted to boot the failed system using an LMDE3 liveCD, which worked fine, but I couldn't manually mount ...

Re: Totally uninstall a package (including dependencies installed during installation)?

Thanks again gm10! A quick couple questions... Back when I first started using LMDE (v1?) I had read a discussion pertaining to apt vs apt-get vs synaptic. If memory serves me correctly (and it doesn't always), I read about some type of issue when using apt. I think it was that (at that time) using ...

[SOLVED] Totally uninstall a package (including dependencies installed during installation)?

So here's another one of these very basic concepts which I haven't really dug into before: I installed ocrmypdf from within Synaptic on my LMDE3 machine. I was in a hurry and didn't write down all the other sub-packages/dependencies it was going to install during installation, and just clicked "Inst...

Re: [SOLVED] Update manager showing "3rd-Party Update" - is this safe?

gm10,
apt list -a pkgname
Perfect! Thanks - that's just what I was looking for! Makes it super easy! (Thanks for the explanation of how to find the versions for a different distro too!)

Re: Update manager showing "3rd-Party Update" - is this safe?

gm10, Thanks for the details! Quick question - how does a person go about finding the versions being offered by the various repos (dmo vs Debian)? When I look in Synaptic, it showed the dmo version at "10:3.3.9", and doesn't show me a non-dmo version - I'd be happy to be pointed to a man file/webpag...

Re: Update manager showing "3rd-Party Update" - is this safe?

Hi gm10, From what I gleaned in the forum topic linked to by Smurphos, in LMDE2 there were potential security issues in using the dmo versions. Perhaps something has changed in how the Debian/software-specific security updates are implemented in LMDE3? I realize the specific exploits linked to in th...

Re: Update manager showing "3rd-Party Update" - is this safe?

Thanks Smurphos! I can't begin to tell you how happy I am that you stuck with this question and provided those links! I also can't begin to tell everyone how discouraged I am that I had installed those stupid updates! It looks like Fred Barclay posted a LMDE2 "work-around" to the issue, and I might ...

Re: Update manager showing "3rd-Party Update" - is this safe?

Thanks Smurphos,

I had checked my sources earlier, and only see the stretch and cindy repos listed...nothing additional. That's why I was surprised to see the "3rd-party" thing. I initially installed both packages via Synaptic listings.

Re: Update manager showing "3rd-Party Update" - is this safe?

Thanks gm10,

Ah, ok! So, in Synaptic, if the little orange logo (which means, "This application is supported by the distribution") doesn't show up next to the specific software pacakge, any updates for that piece of software will show as "3rd-party" updates in update manager?

[SOLVED] Update manager showing "3rd-Party Update" - is this safe?

I normally install all updates (at least I did in LMDE2, and have so far in LMDE3). However, today, I have two updates recommended to me for two popular packages, but instead of the usual update priority number displaying in Update Manager, I see a "globe" icon. When I mouse over the globe it simply...

Arrows to move panel left/right to another monitor?

In LMDE2 (Mate), the panel could be configured to show left/right arrows on each end of the panel, which (if clicked) moved the panel to the screen to the left or right. I've been unable to find a way to accomplish this in LMDE3 Cinnamon. Is there a similar configuration/feature/panel app available ...

Re: SSH key-only authentication on LMDE3

Ok - chalk another one up to not understanding what I had read. The system is actually operating exactly as it is supposed to in my current configuration. I finally realized this after setting up a key pair and testing from LiveCDs of both LMDE3 and Arch Linux - both displayed the same "symptom" of ...

Re: SSH key-only authentication on LMDE3

Hi PhilippeH! Thanks for the link. I went through the steps carefully, but I had already performed the steps. I'm thinking this might have something to do with Debian. Some folks said that by getting rid of the gnome items at startup, that it would resolve the issue. I didn't find this to be true. W...

[SOLVED] SSH key-only authentication on LMDE3

I've pored over the documentation and websites for a few days now. I'm seeing that most instructions for SSH about how to setup "PasswordAuthentication no" (key-only authentication) vary from OS to OS. I'm having difficulty finding documentation which will help me understand key-only authenticated S...

Re: Deleting an SSH key pair?

I wasn't able to find a clear answer to my question about known_hosts online, so I just experimented by backing up known_hosts, then opening it up and deleting the two entries which appeared to be the auto-generated keys. I then created a new set of public/private keys. Everything appears to be work...

Re: Deleting an SSH key pair?

Thanks, Catweazel. The link you provided was one of the sites I had visited which mentioned the problem/bug. However, I was uncertain of the explanations in the "workaround" section, or what the implications would be. My preference is the first workaround mentioned. I'm curious about the ~/.ssh/know...

Re: Deleting an SSH key pair?

So, When I try ssh-add -D (which I forgot to mention, I had tried earlier), I receive an "All identities removed" message. However, the identities have not been removed. One of the afforementioned websites had indicated that this is because the -D switch only applies to manually added keys. So, I tr...
