Re: Dell Inspiron 3542 inconvenience/Display dims with boot

I doubt it is the bios, If I throw either a Ubuntu drive or a windows drive into the laptop, then the "dimming" does not occur.

Re: Laptop screen brightness keeps dropping down

Hi Mike, I have added the following command to my "application autostart" list in the "Session and Startup" preference tool. I havent seen it dim yet, but its too early to tell if this is a fix. xbacklight set 100 Will, I would not classify this as a true fix, but it does resolve the step of having...

Re: Laptop screen brightness keeps dropping down

One question - did you see it happening with mint 17.1? I didnt on my Dell Latitude, ran an upgrade and have since seen the problem. I will have to say [tentatively] yes, but I'm not 100% sure. My Dell has become my primary system for the time being, so it will be a bit before I'm about to swap out...

Dell Inspiron 3542 inconvenience/Display dims with boot

I have two system. My primary desktop is a homebuilt i5 on an ASUS motherboard running Ubuntu 14.04.3. My Dell laptop is an Inspiron model 15 / 3542 less that a year old. With the laptop, I generally swap hard drives with various flavors of Linux to play around with. I've settled on Ubuntu 15.04 and...

Re: Solved : Can't post a response to Linux Mint Blog

One thing - you write «I almost missed it [i e, the on-screen notification] the first time [my emphasis, MHD] I posted in the blog». Should that be taken to mean that such an on-screen notification is shown only the first time a given poster posts to Clem's blog, no matter to which blog post he or ...

Re: Solved : Can't post a response to Linux Mint Blog

Thanks for your reply, Mike ; may I ask just what you mean when you say that «it [i e, Clem's blog] will post a message back to you initially» ? Via the epost address with which one has registered, as do, for example these fora if one requests notification ? If so, I can report that for some reason...

Re: Solved : Can't post a response to Linux Mint Blog

In my experience, most moderated sites post a notice to that effect ; indeed, generally speaking, when one has submitted a post to them a notice is displayed which says something like «your post is awaiting moderation». If memory serves, it will post a message back to you initially. However, once y...

Re: MINT 17.2 RAFAELA RC1: SOME SMALL THINGS I SAW

@ Mike why dont you try to check the keyboards shortcuts: there are some shortcuts to dim and even shut down the screen backlight (in the "system" part). Maybe you have a conflict with your actual shortcut keys. I have got something like this with the audio volume at the beginning with 17.1. I chan...

Re: MINT 17.2 RAFAELA RC1: SOME SMALL THINGS I SAW

Good afternoon Mike <snip> On the rest, I found that this distro is extremely well polished and it keeps the top of the ranking with all what I tried up to now. Best regards JF Duhamel I agree, it is very well executed and I'll hit the logs to see if I can determine why it is doing it. Other than t...

Re: MINT 17.2 RAFAELA RC1: SOME SMALL THINGS I SAW

So far, the only issue I've run into is that 17.2 turns down the system brightness to about 10% during boot. This is on my Dell Inspiron 15 model 3542. More of an annoyance at this time.

Use Turbo Tax Online...problem solved  :D
Not thrilled with the online. I've given it a try and prefer the local install.

Only one reason here and that's TurboTax. If it wasn't for that, I'd add a new hard drive to my collection.

Re: How do you use linux?

Eleven months out of the year, I'm exclusively linux. The Ubuntu LTS on my primary desktop and I bounce between Linux Mint and Ubuntu (non-LTS) on my laptop. For the month I need windows on the desktop, I just swap hard drives.
